Installing UPS Monitoring
Use the following procedure to install a UPS and activate UPS Monitoring on systems running
v2.2 or later.
To install a UPS and activate the UPS Monitoring feature:
1. Upgrade to the latest Mitel 5000 software release. See “Upgrading System Software to
Version 3.0” on page 5-148.
2. The UPS Monitoring flag, Enable Shutdown on Low Battery, is set to Yes by default.
Clearing this flag prevents a system from shutting down when a low battery event is
received from the UPS unit.
3. Plug the Mitel 5000 platform into the UPS. In a CS-5600 configuration, both the Base
Server and the PS-1 are assumed to be plugged into the same UPS. If the UPS unit
provides outlets for both Surge Protection and Back Up Battery, use only the outlets for
Back Up Battery.
4. Plug the UPS monitoring cable into the USB port of the Mitel 5000 platform.
5. Do either of the following, according to your system type:
In an Mitel CS-5200 or CS-5400 system not equipped with a compatible USB hub,
remove the USB flash drive. The flash drive can be swapped with the UPS cable at
a later time for backup purposes, but the UPS cable must be reconnected after
backup for correct functionality of the UPS Monitoring feature.
If the system is equipped with a compatible USB hub, voice mail can be backed up
to a flash drive at the same time the UPS Monitoring feature operates. For a list of
compatible USB hubs, see Table 4-6 on page 4-10.
In a CS-5600 system, the UPS monitoring cable is plugged into an available USB
port on the PS-1. The system then detects the device and an entry appears in
Message Print. Even though the Enabling flag is set to Yes in DB Programming,
UPS Monitoring functionality does not begin until a supported device has been
detected.
NOTES
Consider the following system characteristics:
Additional USB power events such as On Battery or Low Battery are
also displayed in Message Print. If necessary, the option to shutdown
the system on a low battery event can be disabled in DB
Programming.
Depending on the UPS vendor and model, the UPS itself may have
additional configuration options such as low battery threshold. If
available, the UPS configuration can be modified by loading the
manufacturer's software on a PC, connecting the UPS to the PC, and
configuring it directly. Any configuration of the UPS should be done
prior to connecting the Mitel 5000 platform to it.
