Peripheral Equipment
The Mitel platform supports peripheral, or external, equipment that provide enhancements to the
IP system’s basic business communication services. The following sections describe equipment
that can be attached to the platform.
Voice Processor
NuPoint Messenger is voice mail software that resides on the Mitel Applications Suite
®
(MAS)
server. MAS is a software solution that provides co-residency features for applications that use
the Mitel Standard Linux
®
(MSL) operating system. Refer to the Mitel Applications Suite
Installation and Maintenance Manual, Release 1.2 for software specifications and detailed
installation information.
The Enterprise Messaging (EM) system runs either Windows 2000 or Windows 2000 Server.
EM is installed on a PC that is connected to the Mitel system to provide integrated voice
processing (voice mail, automated attendant, hunt group announcement and overflow, buffered
SMDR, optional Fax-On-Demand, Record-A-Call, etc.). For installation instructions, see
“Installing an External Voice Processing System” on page 5-194. For operational details refer to
the applicable manual:

NOTICE
The Voice Processing Unit (VPU): The VPU is no longer supported in v3.0. The VPU was
discontinued in May 2007. Mitel recommends that current VPU installations upgrade to
Enterprise
®
Messaging (EM) or NuPoint Messenger (the new external voice mail system).
The two EM hardware platforms currently available, Base I and Base II, are separate system
components and must be purchased from your local provider. Instructions for converting a
VPU database to an EM database are included in the Enterprise Messaging Installation and
Maintenance Manual, part number 780.8006. Contact your local provider for more
information.
