VMPS, CDP, and Location Change Indication (E911)
The MiVoice IP Phones at Release MCD 4.0 and higher include:
Support of dual-port IP phone operation in the presence of Cisco VLAN Membership Policy
Server (VMPS) security and dynamic VLAN configuration.
Voice VLAN configuration via CDP.
MiVoice IP Phone location move indication using one and only one of the following mech-
anisms per IP subnet: Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP), or
both STP and CDP. For additional details see the section “Network Configuration” on page
109.
The following table highlights the features and their availability:
The individual functions of VLAN, VMPS, and Location change indication are described in the
sections below.
On the controller side, the 3300 ICP can accommodate multiple connections to network Layer
2 switches for resiliency operation. This requires that STP be available at the network
connections and enabled on the 3300 ICP.
The network port configuration examples shown in the following sections are based on the
Cisco 3550 Layer 2/3 switch. Network configuration principles are also described, as the actual
commands may differ between network switches, vendors, and software version installed.
Summary
CDP and VMPS
If CDPv2 is not running in the network, then functionality in a Cisco network may be reduced.
VLAN via CDP, VMPS and location change indication may not be fully supported.
If CDPv2 is running and the auxiliary VLAN is null, then VLAN and VMPS functionality in
a Cisco network is the same as if CDPv2 were not running. Location change information
is based on CDP protocol broadcasts.
For a new Cisco installation where CDP is enabled, the Auxiliary or Voice VLAN should be
used.
CDP can run independent of VMPS.
