Task 1: Preparing to Install an iControl Edge System
The components of an iControl Edge system are usually shipped separately. The functions of
the cycling set-top box, Densité probes, and manual set-top box have been performed
traditionally by separate hardware items. However, it is now possible to aggregate several of
these functions into a single piece of hardware: the EdgeVision.
The advantages of using EdgeVision devices in the place of Densité probes, GC-100 network
adapters, and Allégro-1 Analog systems are illustrated in, but not limited to, the following list:
The EdgeVision device was expressly designed for use in an iControl Edge setup. As such it
is optimized for the task.
iControl Edge paired with EdgeVision devices comprise a much simpler physical setup,
which takes less rack space in a smaller footprint.
EdgeVisions cyclers provide a real video stream at up to 30 frames per second.
EdgeVision can serve in the roles of up to three cyclers and one manual path, all in a
single 1RU footprint.
EdgeVision offers a flexibility in terms of its inputs. That is, without the need for adapters,
EdgeVision accommodates HDMI, Component, and Composite inputs.
In setups using EdgeVision, iControl Edge’s overall power consumption is significantly
lower than in setups not using EdgeVision.
Table 3-1 illustrates a typical setup using Densité probes, GC-100 network adapters, and
Allégros, as it has been done in the past, in contrast with how the same logical setup would
look using the EdgeVision device.
Table 3-2 illustrates the same system-level functionality performed using EdgeVision devices
instead of GC-100, Densité, and Allégro devices.
Cycling set-top box Within the iControl Edge system, a cycling set-top box is used to automatically cycle through a
pre-determined channel list (see "Services Worksheet", on page 99). Video and audio probing is
usually available on this input through the use of a pair of probes (one for the video signal and
one for the audio), or of a single HCP-1801 video control probe with embedded audio
(in conjunction with an ADC-800 CAM converter).
Manual set-top box Within the iControl Edge system, a manual set-top box is not used for cycling. It can be controlled
via the Remote Control area of the iControl Edge Web site. If the output of this set-top box is fed
to an EdgeVision (or Allégro) then it can be monitored from the Detailed Signal Analysis view.
Streaming is usually available on this input. Probing is usually not available on this input.
Note: iControl Edge continues to support the use of all of these devices.
