STEP 1
For the truest color and a finish that lasts,
it’s important to prepare the surface.
1. Start with bare wood that’s in good condition.
Exceptions: Minwax® PolyShades® finish, which lets you stain
over existing stain and Minwax Gel Stain, which lets you stain
even non-porous materials like fiberglass and metal.
2. Remove hardware and make needed repairs.
Fill small holes or cracks with Minwax Stainable Wood Filler.
Tighten up weak joints and boards.
3. Sand to remove finish and surface scratches.
• Use 80- or 100-grit sandpaper with the wood grain.
Don’t over-sand. If you can’t get all the old finish off,
or if you have a piece with carvings that are difficult to sand,
opt for some steel wool and a chemical stripper.
• Use fine sandpaper (220 grit) for a final light sanding.
It smooths the surface and opens wood’s pores.
• Remove sanding dust completely. The best way is a vacuum
with a brush attachment.

Preparación: Paso 1
Para obtener el color más más fiel y un acabado
duradero, es importante preparar la superficie.
1. Comience con madera sin pintar
que esté en buenas condiciones.
Excepciones: Acabado Minwax® PolyShades®, que le permite teñir
maderas con tinte existente y Minwax Gel Stain, que le permite teñir
incluso materiales no porosos, como fibra de vidrio y metal.
2. Retire los herrajes y realice las reparaciones necesarias.
Rellene los orificios pequeños o las grietas con el relleno teñible
para madera Minwax. Ajuste las uniones y las placas sueltas.
3. Lije para eliminar el acabado y los rasguños superficiales.
• Use papel de lija de grano 80 o 100 con la veta de la madera. No lije demasiado.
Si no puede eliminar todo el acabado anterior, o si tiene una pieza con tallas que
son difíciles de lijar, opte por usar lana de acero y un removedor químico.
• Use papel de lija fino (grano 220) para un lijado final ligero.
Alisa la superficie y abre los poros de la madera.
• Elimine el polvo del lijado por completo. La mejor manera
es usar una aspiradora con un accesorio de brocha.
4. Hágale un tratamiento previo a la madera con el
acondicionador previo al teñido para madera Minwax.
Es su mejor garantía contra rayones y manchas. Elija opciones a base
de aceite o de agua para que coincidan con el tipo de tinte que usará.
