FOR PROPER AND SAFE USE Lithium-ion batteries This camera operates on a small, but powerful lithium-ion battery. Misuse or abuse of the lithium-ion battery can cause damage or injury through fire, electric shock, or chemical leakage. Read and understand all warnings before using the battery. GETTING UP AND RUNNING CHARGING THE BATTERY Before the camera can be used, the lithium-ion battery must be charged. Before charging the battery, read the safety warnings on pages 3 and 4 of this manual. Only recharge the battery with the supplied battery charger. The battery should be recharged before each shooting session. See page 100 for battery care and storage. Plug the power cord into the charger unit (1). Plug the other end of the cord into a live household outlet.
INSERTING A BATTERY This digital camera uses one NP-600 lithium-ion battery. Before using the battery, read the safety warnings on pages 3 and 4 of this manual. When replacing the battery, the camera should be turned off. Slide the battery-chamber door toward the side of the camera to release the safety catch (1). Open the door. 1 Insert the battery (2). Close the battery-chamber door (3) and slide it toward the camera to engage the safety catch.
BATTERY-CONDITION INDICATOR This camera is equipped with an automatic battery-condition indicator. It is displayed in the bottom left corner of the LCD monitor when the camera is on. Full-battery indicator - the battery is fully charged. Low-battery indicator - battery power is low. The battery should be recharged as soon as possible. If power is insufficient for camera operation, the both indicator lamps next to the viewfinder blink. The monitor will not turn on. The battery must be recharged.
AC ADAPTER (SOLD SEPARATELY) Always turn off the camera before changing between power supplies. The AC adapter allows the camera to be powered from a household outlet. The AC adapter is recommended when the camera is interfaced with a computer or during periods of heavy use. AC adapter model AC-8U is for use in North America, Taiwan and Japan; AC-8GB is for the United Kingdom and Hong Kong; AC-8C is for China; AC-8E is for use in all other areas.
INSTALLING AND REMOVING A MEMORY CARD Always turn off the camera and confirm the indicator lamps are out before changing the memory card, otherwise the card may be damaged, and data lost. An SD Memory card, MultiMediaCard, or Memory Stick must be inserted for the camera to operate. If a card has not been inserted, a no-card warning appears on the LCD monitor. 1 Slide the battery-chamber door toward the side of the camera to release the safety catch (1). Open the door.
ABOUT MEMORY CARDS The response time during recording and playback is longer with MultiMediaCards compared with SD Memory Cards. This is not a defect, but rather due to the specifications of the cards. When using large capacity cards, some operations like deletion may take longer. The SD Memory Cards and Memory Sticks have a write- SD protect switch to prevent image data from being deleted. Memory However, when the card is protected, images cannot be Card recorded.
TURNING THE CAMERA ON AND OFF Slide the lens cover in the direction indicated to turn on the camera; the lens extends automatically. Do not touch or hinder the lens while it is extending. To turn off the camera, push the cover toward the lens; the lens retracts automatically. The cover can be closed when the lens has completely retracted into the body. ATTACHING THE STRAP Always keep the strap around your neck in the event that the camera is accidentally dropped.
SETTING THE LANGUAGE, DATE, AND TIME After initially inserting a memory card and charging the battery, the menu language and the camera’s clock and calendar must be set on the setup menu. The four-way keys of the controller move the cursor and change settings. Pressing the menu button sets selections. Use the up/down keys to select the language. RECORDING MODE - BASIC OPERATION This section covers basic recording operation. To prepare the camera for use, read pages 14 through 21. HANDLING THE CAMERA While using the viewfinder or LCD monitor, grip the camera firmly with your right hand while supporting the camera body with your left. Keep your elbows at your side and your feet shoulder-width apart to hold the camera steadily. Take care not to cover the lens, flash, or flash sensor with your fingers or the strap.
USING THE ZOOM LENS This camera is equipped with a 8 - 24mm zoom lens. This is equivalent to a 39 to 117mm lens on a 35mm camera. The lens is operated by the zoom buttons on the back of the camera. The effect of the optical zoom is visible in both the viewfinder and LCD monitor. To zoom in on the subject, push the tele zoom button. To zoom out, push the wide zoom button. The digital-zoom function can increase the power of the lens. The digital zoom is activated in the recording menu (p. 43).
BASIC RECORDING OPERATION Place the subject within the AF area. The focus-lock function (p. 25) can be used with off-center subjects. If the subject is closer than 1m (3ft.) at the zoom lens’ wide-angle position or 3m (10ft) at the telephoto position, only use the LCD monitor to frame the subject. 1 Press the shutter-release button partway down (1) to lock the focus and exposure. The aperture value (f-number) and shutter speed is displayed at the top right of the monitor when the exposure is locked.
FOCUS LOCK The focus-lock function is used when you want to compose the image with the subject off-center and outside the AF area. Focus lock may also be used when a special situation prevents the camera from focusing on the subject (p. 26). This function is controlled with the shutter-release button. For information on continuous-advance focus lock, see page 80. Place the subject within the AF area.
FOCUS SIGNALS This digital camera has a quick, accurate autofocusing system. The green indicator lamp next to the viewfinder indicates the focus status. The shutter can be released regardless if the camera can focus on the subject or not. Focus confirmed - the green indicator lamp glows. Focus is locked. Cannot focus - the green indicator lamp blinks. SPECIAL FOCUSING SITUATIONS The camera may not be able to focus in certain situations. In these situations, focus lock (p. 25) or AF lock (p.
DISPLAY BUTTON - RECORDING MODE The display button (1) controls the LCD monitor display. The display cycles to the next format each time the button is pressed: standard display, live image only, and monitor off. 1 Monitor off Standard display Live image only Battery power can be conserved by turning the monitor off and using the viewfinder to take pictures. However, because of parallax, the monitor should be used for subjects closer than 1m (3ft.
FLASH MODES The flash can be used when taking still images. To select the flash mode, press the right key of the controller (1) until the appropriate mode is displayed. The active flash mode is displayed in the top left corner of the LCD monitor. 1 Autoflash - the flash fires automatically in low-light conditions. Red-eye reduction - the flash fires a single burst before the main flash burst to reduce red-eye; an effect caused by light reflected from the retina.
Flash cancel - the flash will not fire. Use flash cancel when flash photography is prohibited, natural light is desired to illuminate the subject, or the subject is beyond the flash range. Camera Notes The slow-sync. option in the recording menu specifies the minimum shutter speed used with a particular flash mode to control camera shake. See page 48 for more information. The custom option in the setup menu (p. 77) allows the available flash modes to be edited.
FOCUS MODES AND SELF-TIMER Macro and landscape focus modes as well as a self-timer can be selected by pressing the left key of the controller (1) until the appropriate mode is displayed. The active mode is displayed in the top left corner of the LCD monitor. 1 Macro - used for close-up photographs. The minimum subject distance changes with the zoom position of the lens. Wide-angle position 6cm (2.4in) - ∞ Telephoto position 50cm (19.7in) - ∞ Macro If the subject is outside the flash range (p.
Self-timer - for self-portraits. The self-timer delays the release of the shutter for ten seconds. Set the camera on a tripod and confirm the subject will be within the AF area when the shutter releases; focus is determined just before the exposure. Press the shutterrelease button all the way down to start the timer. The self-timer lamp on the front of the camera blinks during the countdown; it flashed quickly just before the picture is taken. The self-timer is canceled after the exposure.
PLAYBACK - BASIC OPERATION Images are viewed in the playback mode. This section covers the basic playback operation. The playback mode has additional functions, see page 55. Press the playback button to view recorded images. Images can be viewed directly from the recording mode or when the lens cover is closed. When the cover is closed, press and hold the playback button for a few seconds until the monitor activates. To cancel the playback mode, press the playback button.
VIEWING IMAGES In playback mode, use the left/right keys of the controller (1) to scroll through the images on the memory card. 1 DELETING IMAGES To delete a displayed file or all files in the memory location indicated at the top of the image, press the delete button. A confirmation screen appears. Use the left/right keys to highlight the appropriate option. “THIS” deletes the displayed image and “ALL” deletes all images in the memory location at the top of the display. “CANCEL” ends the delete operation.
INDEX PLAYBACK To view the recorded images in a 9-frame index, press the wide-angle zoom button (1). The images are grouped by the memory card which is indicated on the first frame of the group. The frame number of the image is displayed. 1 The controller moves the red border among the images. Press the menu button, telephoto zoom button, or shutter-release button to display the framed image in the single-frame playback mode.
RECORDING - ADVANCED OPERATION NAVIGATING THE RECORDING MENU Navigating the menu is simple. The menu button turns the menu on. The controller moves the cursor and changes settings on the menu. Pressing the menu button selects menu options and sets adjustments. To activate the recording menu, press the menu button. Use the up/down keys of the controller to scroll through the menu options. Highlight the option whose setting needs to be changed.
RESOLUTION - IMAGE SIZE AND COMPRESSION Image size and the compression rate are set with the resolution option in the recording menu. See navigating the recording menu section on page 35. Changing image size affects the number of pixels in each image. The greater the image size, the larger the file size. Choose image size based on the final use of the image smaller images are more suitable for web sites whereas larger sizes produce higher quality prints. Compression affects the file size and image detail.
The new image size and compression rate is displayed on the live monitor image. Compression Image size If image resolution is changed, the frame counter displays the approximate number of images that can be recorded at that setting on the installed memory card. The number of images that can be stored on a memory card is determined by the size of the card and the file size of the images, however no more than 999 images can be recorded on one memory card.
MOVIE RECORDING This camera can record up to 30 seconds 320x240 of digital video with sound at approximately 180KB/s. Movie recording is activated with the recording menu, see the navigating the recording menu section on page 35. The digital zoom cannot be used and the monitor cannot be turned off. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the movie option. RESOLUTION MOVIE ON EXPOSURE WHITE BALANCE AE RETURN SELECT Press the right controller key to continue.
EXPOSURE COMPENSATION The camera exposure can be adjusted to make the final picture lighter or darker by as much as ±1.5Ev in 0.3 increments. Exposure compensation is set in the recording menu (p. 35). When set to any value other than 0.0, the exposure-compensation value remains in the top left corner of the monitor as a warning. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the exposure option. Press the right controller key to continue.
WHITE BALANCE White balance is the camera’s ability to make different types of lighting appear neutral. One automatic and four preset white-balance setting are available. White balance is set in the recording menu (p. 35). The automatic white balance compensates for the color temperature of a scene. Auto white balance is sufficient in most cases. When one of the preset white-balance settings is selected, an indicator is displayed on the monitor; the effect is immediately visible in the live image.
AE METERING MODES The AE metering mode controls how light is measured. This is set in the recording menu (p. 35). Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the AE option. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the up/down keys to select the new setting. Press the right key or menu button to complete the operation. The left controller key cancels the operation.
MONOCHROME Monochrome creates black and white images. The B&W mode produces neutral monochrome images. Sepia creates warm-tone monochrome images. This mode is set in recording menu (p. 35). The live image on the monitor reflects the selected mode. The monochrome mode has no effect on image file size. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the monochrome option. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the up/down keys to select the new setting.
DIGITAL ZOOM The digital zoom is activated in the recording menu (p. 35). The digital zoom increases the magnification of the greatest telephoto setting of the optical zoom by 2X and 3X. Although the images recorded with the digital zoom are interpolated to the set image size, the quality of the images may not be equal to images taken without the digital zoom; the greater the power of the digital zoom the lower the image quality. The effect of the digital zoom is visible on the LCD monitor only.
ADJUSTING THE MONITOR The monitor brightness and color can be adjusted with the recording menu (p. 35) or playback menu (p. 56). Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the monitor adj. option on the recording or playback menu. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the up/down keys of the controller to select the brightness (white box), red, green, or blue channel. For more on color, see page 53. MONOCHROME DIGITAL ZOOM MONITOR ADJ. VOICE ADD REC RETURN SELECT MONITOR ADJ.
VOICE RECORDING A maximum of 30 seconds of audio can be recorded. Voice recording is activated with the recording menu, see the navigating the recording menu section on page 35. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the voice option. Press the right controller key to continue. Press the shutter-release button to start recording; the recording time is displayed on the monitor. The recording stops when the shutter-release button is pressed again or the recording time has elapsed.
ADD AUDIO RECORDING Approximately 30 seconds of audio can be attached to a still image. This function is activated with the recording or playback menu. See the navigating the recording menu or playback menu sections on page 35 or 56. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the add-rec option on the recording or playback menu. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the left/right controller keys to display the image to which to add the audio track.
DELETE AUDIO RECORDING An audio track can be deleted from a still image. This function is activated with the recording menu (p. 35) or playback menu (p. 56). Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the add-rec option on the recording or playback menu. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the left/right controller keys to display the image from which to delete the audio track. The audio indicator is displayed with images with audio tracks.
SLOW SHUTTER LIMIT The minimum shutter speed used for automatic exposures can be specified. This function is located on the recording menu, see the navigating the recording menu section on page 35. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the slow-shutter option. SLOW SHUTTER MAN EXPOSURE ON QUALITY SETUP Press the right controller key to continue. RETURN Use the left/right keys to turn the slow shutter limit on or off.
MANUAL EXPOSURE Exposures for still images can be specified by the photographer. The shutter speed range is 15 seconds to 1/1000 second. This function is located on the recording menu, see the navigating the recording menu section on page 35. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the man-exposure option. SLOW SHUTTER MAN EXPOSURE ON QUALITY SETUP Press the right controller key to continue. RETURN Use the left/right keys to change the shutter speed (1).
QUALITY The quality option allows the camera sensitivity and flash compensation to be selected, and the saturation, contrast, sharpness, and color of images to be adjusted. The color settings also affect movies. This option is located on the recording menu, see page 35. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the quality option. SLOW SHUTTER MAN EXPOSURE ON QUALITY SETUP Press the right controller key to continue.
Camera sensitivity - ISO speed Five camera sensitivity settings can be selected with a still image. The auto setting automatically adjusts the camera sensitivity to the light conditions between ISO 50 and ISO 200. The camera sensitivity can also be specified among ISO 50, 100, 200, and 400. The numerical values are based on an ISO equivalent. As the ISO value doubles, the camera sensitivity doubles.
Saturation Saturation controls how vivid the colors of an image are. Saturation can be set in five levels with the quality option in the recording menu (p. 50). Contrast Contrast controls the tonal ratio of an image. Contrast can be set in five levels with the quality option in the recording menu (p. 50). Decreased contrast Normal contrast Increased contrast Sharpness Sharpness accents or softens details in an image in five levels with the quality option in the recording menu (p. 50).
Color The red, green, and blue color channels can be adjusted in five levels with the quality option in the recording menu (p. 50). Any changes made are applied to the live image. AN INTRODUCTION TO COLOR In photography, red, green, and blue are the primary colors. The secondary colors, cyan, magenta, and yellow, are made from combining the primary colors: cyan = blue + green, magenta = blue + red, and yellow = red + green.
A SHORT GUIDE TO PHOTOGRAPHY Photography can be a rewarding pursuit. It is a broad and disciplined field that can take years to master. But the pleasure in making photographs and the joy of capturing a magical moment cannot be compared. The guide is an introduction to some basic photographic principles. The zoom lens not only affects how large the subject is in the picture, but it also influences the depth of field and perspective.
PLAYBACK - ADVANCED OPERATION The basic functions in this mode are described in the basic playback section on pages 32 through 34. This section covers how to playback movie clips and audio tracks as well as the advanced function on the playback menu. PLAYING BACK MOVIES AND AUDIO Movie clips (p. 38) and audio tracks (p. 45, 46) can be played back in the playback mode. The type of file is specified with an indicator in the bottom right corner of the monitor and the playback time in the top right corner.
NAVIGATING THE PLAYBACK MENU Navigating the menu is simple. The menu button turns the menu on. The controller moves the cursor and changes settings on the menu. Pressing the menu button selects menu options and sets adjustments. To activate the playback menu, press the menu button. Use the up/down keys of the controller to scroll through the menu options. Highlight the option whose setting needs to be changed.
FRAME-SELECTION SCREEN When choosing multiple files is required, the frame selection screen appears. Use the controller to move the red border around the file to be selected. Press the menu button to select the file; a yellow border indicates selected files. If the frame is marked with a yellow border, pressing the menu button again clears the border deseleting the image. The following indicators may be displayed: Movie file Audio track attached Voice recording Repeat until all required files are selected.
COPY Files can be copied between memory cards. Two memory cards must be in the camera to select this playback menu option. Before using the copy routine, confirm that the destination card has sufficient free memory. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the copy option. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the up/down keys to highlight the copy or unit option. Press the right controller key to display the settings. Use the up/down keys to highlight the new setting.
Use the up/down keys to highlight the enter option. Press the right key or menu button to complete the operation. The left controller key cancels the copy routine. COPY COPY UNIT ENTER CANCEL SD MS SELECT SELECT If the select unit option was selected, the frame selection screen opens. Select the image(s) to be copied by placing the red frame on the index thumbnail and pressing the menu button; a yellow frame indicates selection. Highlight the “END” frame and press the menu button to continue.
DELETE Deleting permanently erases the file. Once deleted, a file cannot be recovered. Care should be taken when deleting images. Single, multiple, or all files on a specific memory card can be deleted with the playback menu (p. 56). The delete function can only erase unprotected files. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the delete option. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the up/down keys to highlight the media or unit option.
Use the up/down keys to highlight the enter option. Press the right key or menu button to complete the operation. The left controller key cancels the delete routine. DELETE MEDIA UNIT ENTER CANCEL SD SELECT SELECT If the select unit option was selected, the frame selection screen opens. Select the image(s) to be deleted by placing the red frame on the index thumbnail and pressing the menu button; a yellow frame indicates selection. Highlight the “END” frame and press the menu button to continue.
DPOF The DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) allows direct printing of still images from digital cameras. After creating the DPOF file, take the memory card to a photofinishing service or insert it into the memory-card slot of a DPOF compatible printer. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the DPOF option. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the up/down keys to highlight the media, unit, or date option. Press the right controller key to display the settings.
Use the up/down keys to highlight the enter option. Press the right key or menu button to complete the operation. The left controller key cancels the DPOF routine. DPOF MEDIA UNIT DATE ENTER CANCEL SD SELECT ALL ON SELECT If the select unit option was selected, the frame selection screen opens. Select the image(s) to be printed by placing the red frame on the index thumbnail and pressing the menu button; a yellow frame indicates selection.
PROTECT Important files can be protected. A protected file cannot be erased by any of the camera’s delete functions. However, the formatting function (p. 71) will erase all files on a memory card whether protected or not. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the protect option. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the up/down keys to highlight the media or unit option. Press the right controller key to display the settings. Use the up/down keys to highlight the new setting.
Use the up/down keys to highlight the enter option. Press the right key or menu button to complete the operation. The left controller key cancels the protect routine. PROTECT MEDIA UNIT ENTER CANCEL SD SELECT SELECT If the select unit option was selected, the frame selection screen opens. Select the image(s) to be protected by placing the red frame on the index thumbnail and pressing the menu button; a yellow frame indicates selection.
MOVE Unprotected files can be moved from one memory card in the camera to another. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the move option. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the up/down keys to highlight the move or unit option. Press the right controller key to display the settings. Use the up/down keys to highlight the new setting. RESIZE PROTECT MOVE SLIDE SHOW ADD REC.
Use the up/down keys to highlight the enter option. Press the right key or menu button to complete the operation. The left controller key cancels the move routine. MOVE MOVE UNIT ENTER CANCEL SD MS SELECT SELECT If the select unit option was selected, the frame selection screen opens. Select the image(s) to be moved by placing the red frame on the index thumbnail and pressing the menu button; a yellow frame indicates selection. Highlight the “END” frame and press the menu button to continue.
RESIZE A still image can be resized to a VGA (640 X 480) or QVGA (320 X 240) JPEG copy so that it may be easily transmitted by e-mail. The compression rate for resized images is not displayed when played back. The resize function is on the playback menu (p. 56). Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the resize option. Press the right controller key to continue. Use the up/down keys to highlight the size setting. RESIZE PROTECT MOVE SLIDE SHOW ADD REC.
SLIDE SHOW Each file on the memory cards are displayed automatically in order for approximately two seconds. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the slide-show option. Press the right controller key to begin the slideshow playback. RESIZE PROTECT MOVE SLIDE SHOW ADD REC. RETURN SELECT RESIZE PROTECT MOVE SLIDE SHOW ADD REC RETURN SELECT Press the menu button to cancel the slide show. ADD AUDIO RECORDING Approximately 30 seconds of audio can be attached to a still image.
SETUP MENU NAVIGATING THE SETUP MENU The setup menu can be opened from either the recording menu or playback menu. Use the up/down keys of the controller to highlight the setup option. Press the right controller key to open the menu. Navigating the menu is simple. The controller moves the cursor and changes settings on the menu. Pressing the menu button selects menu options and sets adjustments. Use the up/down keys of the controller to scroll through the menu options.
FORMAT When a memory card is formatted, all data on the card is erased. The formatting function is used to erase all data on a memory card. Before formatting a memory card, copy the data to a computer or storage device. Protecting images do not prevent them from being deleted when the card is formatted. Always format the memory card using the camera; never use a computer to format a card. Select the format option from the setup menu (p. 70).
RECORDING MENU SETUP A basic or detailed recording menu can be selected. Page 35 shows the detailed menu options. Select the rec menu option from the setup menu (p. 70). Use the up/down keys to highlight the menu type. Press the right key or menu button to complete the operation. The left controller key cancels the operation. The resolution option on the basic recording menu does not allow the compression rate to be changed; normal compression is used for all images.
QUICK VIEW Quick View plays back a still image for approximately three seconds after it has been recorded. Select the Quick View option from the setup menu (p. 70). Use the up/down keys to highlight on or off. QUICK VIEW SET ON OFF Press the right key or menu button to complete the operation. The left controller key cancels the operation. Quick View can be canceled before the end of the playback period by pressing the shutter-release button partway down. When using continuous advance (p.
SOUND The sounds used in camera operation can be turned on and off. The beep is for the selftimer countdown and warnings. The effect is for the focus signal and when the camera is turn on. The shutter sound is used when a picture is taken. Select the sound option from the setup menu (p. 70). Use the up/down keys to highlight the beep, effect, or shutter option. Press the right controller key to display the settings. Use the up/down keys to highlight off or on.
FILE-NUMBER RESET If file-number reset is active and the memory card is changed or all files are deleted, the first file saved is assigned a 0001 file number. If file number reset is off, the first image saved has a number one greater than the last file saved regardless of the number of files on the card. If a new card contains an image with a greater file number, the file number of the saved image will be one greater than the greatest on the card. Select the number-reset option from the setup menu (p. 70).
LANGUAGE The language used in the menus can be changed. Select the language option from the setup menu (p. 70). Use the up/down keys to select the language. Press the right key or menu button to continue. The left controller key cancels the operation. Use the left/right keys to highlight “Yes.” “No” will cancel the operation. Press the menu button to complete the operation.
CUSTOM SETUP The custom-setup option allows the camera functions to be customized. See the following page for information on custom functions. Select the custom option from the setup menu (p. 70). Use the up/down keys to highlight an option. Press the right key or menu button to continue. Press the left controller key to return to the setup menu. CUSTOM SETUP NOTES To set the custom-setup option, see the previous page. Flash modes This custom-setup option edits the flash modes available in the recording mode. One flash mode must be left active. For more on flash modes, see page 28. Macro - focus and self-timer modes This custom-setup option edits the focus and self-timer modes available in the recording mode. One mode must be left active. Three fixed focus modes can be added: 4m (13ft), 2m (6.6ft), and 1m (3.3ft).
White balance In the recording mode, press the down controller key to change the white balance. For more on white balance, see page 40. AF (autofocus) lock In the recording mode, press the shutterrelease button partway down to focus the camera (1). While continuing to hold the shutter-release button, press the left controller key (2) to lock the focus; the AF lock indicator is displayed at the top of the monitor. The focus remains locked even after the exposure. Repeat the procedure to cancel the AF lock.
Continuous-advance focus lock A series of images can be captured by holding down the shutter-release button. This option specifies whether the camera focuses between each frame of the series (OFF), or fixes the focus with the first frame (ON). RESET DEFAULT This function resets the camera to its default settings. Select the default option from the setup menu (p. 70). Use the left/right keys to select “Yes.” “No” cancels the operation Press the menu button to complete the operation.

TRANSFER MODE The data-transfer mode must be specified depending on whether images are transferred to a computer or printed directly. The data-storage option must be selected to transfer data from the camera to a computer or when using the DiMAGE Viewer software. The PictBridge option allows images to be printed directly from the camera with a PictBridge compatible printer (p. 92). Select the transfer-mode option from the setup menu (p. 70). Use the up/down keys to highlight the appropriate option.
DATA-TRANSFER MODE Read this section carefully before connecting the camera to a computer. Details on using and installing the DiMAGE Viewer software are found in the supplied software manual. The DiMAGE manuals do not cover the basic operation of computers or their operating systems; please refer to the manual supplied with your computer.
CONNECTING THE CAMERA TO A COMPUTER A fully charged battery should be used when the camera is connected to a computer. The use of the AC adapter (sold separately) is recommended over the use of the battery. For users with Windows 98 or 98SE, read the section on page 85 on how to install the necessary USB driver before connecting the camera to a computer. 1.Insert the memory card into the camera. Confirm the memory-priority option in the setup menu is set to the card type.
CONNECTING TO WINDOWS 98 AND 98 SE The driver needs only to be installed once. If the driver cannot be installed automatically, it can be installed manually with the operating system’s add-new-hardware wizard; see the instructions on the following page. During installation, if the operating system requests the Windows 98 CD-ROM, insert it into the CD-ROM drive and follow the accompanying instructions on the screen. No special driver software is required for other Windows or Macintosh operating systems.
Manual Installation To install the Windows 98 driver manually, follow the instructions in the connecting-the-camera-to-acomputer section on page 84. When the camera is plugged into the computer, the operating system will detect the new device and the add-new-hardware-wizard window opens. Place the DiMAGE Viewer CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. Click “Next.” Choose the recommended search for a suitable driver. Click “Next.” Choose to specify the location of the driver.
The add new hardware wizard will confirm the location of the driver. The letter designating the CDROM drive varies between computers. Click “Next” to install the driver in the system. One of three drivers may be located: MNLVENUM.inf, USBPDR.inf, or USBSTRG.inf. The last window confirms the driver has been installed. Click “Finish” to close the add new hardware wizard. Restart the computer. When the my-computer window is opened, a new removable-disk or G600 drive icon is displayed.
MEMORY CARD FOLDER ORGANIZATION Once the camera is connected to the computer, image and audio files can be accessed by double clicking on icons. Image folders are located in the DCIM folder. To copy images and audio recordings, simply drag and drop the file icon into a location in the computer. G600-SD DCIM Misc The misc. folder contains DPOF print files (p. 62). Files and folders on the memory card can be deleted using the computer.
Image and audio file names begin with “PICT” followed by a four-digit file number and a jpg, avi, or wav extension. Audio files attached to still images have a wav extension and the file number corresponds to their image file. Voice recordings also use the wav extension. When the file number exceeds 9,999, a new folder is created. The first three digits of the folder name increase by one: e.g. from 100KM017 to 101KM017. “KM” stands for Konica Minolta, and 017 indicates a DiMAGE G600 camera.
DISCONNECTING THE CAMERA FROM A COMPUTER Never disconnect the camera when data is being transferred between the camera and computer, Windows 98 / 98 Second Edition Confirm no files are being copied between the camera and computer. Disconnect the USB cable. Windows Me, 2000 Professional, and XP To disconnect the camera, click once on the unplug-or-eject-hardware icon located on the task bar. A small window opens indicating the device to be stopped. Click on the small window to stop the device.
The hardware devices to be stopped is displayed. Highlight the device by clicking on it then click “Stop.” A confirmation screen appears to indicate the devices to be stopped. Clicking “OK” will stop the device. A third and final screen appears to indicate the camera can be safely disconnected from the computer. Close the window and then disconnect the USB cable.
PICTBRIDGE Confirm the transfer-mode option in the setup menu is set to PictBridge. Connect the camera to a PictBridge compatible printer using the camera’s USB cable. The larger plug of the cable is connected to the printer. Insert the smaller plug of the cable into the camera; the camera turns on automatically and starts the PictBridge connection. Individual still images can be selected for printing on the PictBridge screen.

NOTES ON PRINTING ERRORS If a minor problem occurs during printing, such as the paper runs out, follow the procedure recommended for the printer; no action is required for the camera. If a major printer error occurs, press the menu button to end the routine. Refer to the printer manual for the correct procedure for the printer problem. Check the printer settings before starting again and use the PictBridge screen to deselect the images that were printed.
CHANGING THE MEMORY CARD - DATA-TRANSFER MODE Never remove the card when data is being transferred between the camera and computer - the data or memory card may permanently be damaged. APPENDIX Troubleshooting The section covers minor problems with basic camera operation. For major problems or damage, or if a problem continues to reoccur frequently, contact a Konica Minolta service facility. Problem The camera will not work. Shutter will not release. CARE AND STORAGE Read this section in its entirety to get the best results from your camera. With proper care, your camera will provide years of service. Camera care • Do not subject the camera to shock or impact. • Turn off the camera when transporting. • This camera is neither waterproof nor splashproof. Inserting or removing batteries or the memory card, or operating the camera with wet hands may damage the camera. • When at the beach or near water, take care not to expose the camera to water or sand.
Memory cards SD Memory Cards, MultiMediaCards, and Memory Sticks are manufactured with precision electronic components. The following may cause data loss or damage: • Improper use of the card. • Bending, dropping, or subjecting the card to impact. • Heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. • Static electrical discharge or electromagnetic fields near the card. • Removing the card or interrupting the power supply while the camera or a computer is accessing the card (reading, writing, formatting, etc.).
Operating temperatures and conditions • This camera has been designed for use in temperatures from 0°C to 50°C (32°F to 122°F). • Never leave the camera exposed to extreme high temperatures, such as in a car parked in the sun, or to extreme humidity. • When taking the camera from a cold to a warm environment, place it in a sealed plastic bag to prevent condensation from forming. Allow the camera to come to room temperature before removing it from the bag.
