INSTALLING FIREBRICK:
Line the inside walls of your 󺸾re pit with 󺸾rebrick. You can install the 󺸾rebrick as you
assemble to the 󺸾re pit or afterward. Use only refractory mortar to adhere the 󺸾rebrick.
Firebricks should be set like a veneer by applying mortar to the back of the brick, adhere to
the wall and remove excess mortar with a trowel. Joints between bricks should be between
1-3 mm, and 󺸾lled with refractory mortar. For more technical information on refractory
mortar please refer to the manufactures speci󺸾cations sheet included with these instructions.
Once youre 󺸾nished with the assembly of your new 󺸾re pit, place 6” of sand to the
inside of your 󺸾re pit for logs and hot coals to sit safely on.
A solid foundation for your Bench is necessary to prevent settling and tiling of your project.
We recommend a leveling pad, unless local building code requires you to have a concrete
foundation.
TIPS ON BUILDING LEVELING PADS:
* First remove organic top soil
* Create a leva 󺸾nes (GW as per ASTM D248).
* Leveling pad should be a minimum of 6 to 8 inches thick. For leveling pads greater than
8” thick, the 󺸾ll shall be placed in multiple lifts. Each layer or lift of 󺸾ll material shall be
leveled and compacted to a 95% Standard Proctor density.
* If a concrete slab is required, prepare a leveling pad using the same procedures listed
above. The concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 2500 psi. A 4-inch
thick leveling slab should be more than suf󺸾cient. Thickened edged and reinforcement of
the leveling slabs maybe be required, please consult a professional engineer for speci󺸾c
requirements.
