Tim Bitson (see References) designed the original 1-Wire Lightning Monitor
shown in Figure 17. The 1-Wire side of the design is the same as the rain gauge
and wind speed sensor, in other words a DS2423 counter. The input to the
counter is not a reed switch, but rather an amplified antenna pickup. Any
lightning strikes occurring within range of the antenna will be amplified by Q1 and
Q2 and then presented to the DS2423 counter input, which will register the strike
as a count. These counts are then reported over the 1-Wire bus when the
DS2423 is interrogated.
Great care should be taken with this sensor to 1. Properly ground it, and 2.
Disconnect it whenever lightning is too close. Lightning is very unpredictable and
the last thing you want is to have high voltage surge through your sensor back to
your PC or elsewhere in your house.
When used with the TEMP08, set the DS2423 type to ā€œLā€ (lightning).
