The basics
There are a few things you need to know to get around your Surface Pro.
Update to Windows 8.1
Important All of the info in this guide is for Windows 8.1.
 Surface Pro 2: Windows 8.1 is already installed (skip ahead to the next heading).
 Surface Pro: Make sure you have Windows 8.1 Pro. Here’s how:
1. From the Start screen, tap or click the Desktop tile.
2. Open the Settings charm (swipe in from the right edge of the screen and then tap Settings).
3. Tap or click PC info and see which version of Windows you have.
4. If you have Windows 8 Pro, install the free Windows 8.1 update from the Windows Store—to find
out how, see Update to Windows 8.1 on Surface.com.

Touch, keyboard, mouse, and pen
With Surface, you can easily switch between using touch, a keyboard, mouse, or pen.
 Touch. Like a smartphone, you can use your fingers on the touchscreen. For example, drag your finger
across the screen to scroll.
 Keyboard. Click in a Typing Cover or use a full-size USB or Bluetooth keyboard.
 Mouse. Use the Typing Cover touchpad, or connect a USB or Bluetooth mouse.
 Pen. Take notes, draw, and mark up documents using the Pro Pen.
