Phone at a glance 1. Phone at a glance ■ Open the fold To use the phone, you must open the fold. Do not try to open the fold more than the hinge allows. To close the fold, push from the top part of the device, not from the hinge.
Phone at a glance ■ The start screen The start screen is home base and indicates your phone is in the standby mode. Signal strength (1)—A higher bar indicates a stronger network signal. Menu (2)—Press the left selection key to view menus. Battery level (3)—A higher bar indicates more power in the battery. Right selection key (4)—Press to access menu shortcuts. See "My menu settings," p. 36. ■ Quick keys In the standby mode, use the quick keys as follows: • Scroll up to access the call register.

Phone at a glance In the standby mode, select Menu; then, within 3 seconds, press the numbered keys associated with the menu function to view or activate it. Repeat for submenus.
Set up your device 2. Set up your device ■ The antenna Your device has a fixed antenna located towards the top of the phone with the fold closed. Hold the phone with the antenna area pointed up and over your shoulder. As with any other radio transmitting device, do not touch the antenna unnecessarily when the device is switched on. Contact with the antenna affects call quality and may cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed.
Set up your device Slide the back cover off to remove it (1). Insert the battery so that the gold-colored connectors on the battery align with the connectors on the device (2). Replace the back cover: align the catches (3) together, and slide the cover (4) forward. Charge the battery 1. Plug the charger transformer into a standard ac outlet. 2. Open the rubber cover located at the top of the phone. Connect the charger plug into the connector in the device. The battery indicator bar starts scrolling.
Set up your device 3. Disconnect the charger from the device and the ac outlet. ■ Switch on or off Warning: Do not switch the device on when wireless phone use is prohibited, or when it may cause interference or danger. The on-off function for this device is combined with the end key. To switch the device on or off, press and hold the end key. When you switch off the device, the profiles list is displayed before the device switches off. When you switch the device on, it may request a lock code.
Set up your device You can set keys 2–9 as 1-touch dialing keys. After you assign a number to a key, press and hold the key in standby mode to make a call, or press the number and the call key. Assign a number to a key 1. Select Menu > Contacts > 1-touch dialing > Edit. 2. Scroll to the desired key, and select Assign. If a phone number is already assigned, select Options to view, change, or delete the assignment. 3. Select Assign to SMS for text messaging or Assign to call for voice calls.
Set up your device ■ Voice mail Voice mail is a network service. For more information, and to receive your voice mailbox number, contact your service provider. To listen to your voice mail, press and hold 1. You may need to enter the number when calling for the first time. To save the voice mailbox number, see Save voice mailbox number, 23. To forward calls to your voice mailbox. see Call settings, 31. ■ Number screening You can set your device to screen calls and messages from specific numbers.
Text entry 3. Text entry You can enter text and numbers two ways: traditional text input indicated with , or predictive text input indicated with .. ■ Traditional text input • Press a key once to insert the first letter on the key, twice for the second letter, etc. If you pause briefly, the last letter in the display is accepted and your device awaits the next entry.
Text entry Activate or deactivate To activate predictive text, at any text entry screen, select Options > Predictive text and the desired language. To revert to traditional text entry, select Options > Predictive text > Prediction off. Text entry • For each letter of the word that you want to spell, press the corresponding key on your keypad only once, even if the letter you want is not the first letter on the key. The device guesses the word you are trying to spell.

Messages If you have subscribed to a messaging service through your wireless provider, you can send and receive messages to compatible devices that also subscribe to a compatible message service. ■ Write messages 1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Messages > Create message, and enter the message. The number of available characters are shown on the top right of the display. 2. Select Options to access other functions. 3.
Messages Receive MIDI ring tones Copyright protections may prevent some images, music (including ring tones) and other content from being copied, modified, transferred or forwarded. When the device receives a ring tone message, it displays a ring tone alert message. Select Show to view the ring tone message, or view the Inbox if multiple ring tones are available. Select Exit to return to the standby mode and discard the ring tone. To retrieve a waiting ring tone, select Retrieve.
Messages 2. Enter a name for the list, and select OK. 3. To add contacts to this list, select Options > View list > Options > Add contact and the contact or contacts to be added to the list. 4. When you have added your contacts, select Back. Send a message to a distribution list 1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Messages > Create message. 2. Select Options > Sending options > Send to list, the desired distribution list, then OK.
Messages 3. To reset message counters, select Clear counters and the counter that you want to reset. The Message counter submenu is also located under the Call log main menu. Message settings Select Menu > Messages > Message settings and one of the following: Templates—View, edit, or delete preset message templates. Smileys—Use preset smileys, such as :-) in messages. You can also edit and delete the existing smileys and create new smileys. Callback number—Include a callback number to your messages.
Messages When you connect and the prerecorded greeting begins, follow the automated instructions to listen to your voice messages. Clear voice mail icon You can clear the voice mail notification from the display. Select Menu > Messages > Voice mailbox > Clear voice mail icon to clear the voice mail icon from the start screen and set the number of voice mail messages to 0.
Call log 5. Call log Call log records the phone numbers of missed, received, and dialed calls, the approximate length of your calls, and the number of sent and received messages. For call log to work properly, the following conditions must be met: • You must be in a digital network, your service provider must support caller ID, and it must be enabled in the device. • Your calls cannot be blocked. • Your device must be on and within the service area or in a compatible network if roaming.
Call log ■ Delete recent call list You cannot undo this operation. Select Menu > Call log > Delete recent call lists > All, Missed, Received, or Dialed. ■ Call timers Your device tracks the approximate amount of time you spend on each call. Note: The actual invoice for calls and services from your service provider may vary, depending upon network features, rounding off for billing, taxes, and so forth.
Contacts 6. Contacts You can save names and device numbers in device memory. The device memory can store up to 200 names. ■ Contacts options To access contacts options, in the standby mode, select Menu > Contacts. ■ Search for a name and phone number 1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Contacts > Find. 2. Enter the first one or more characters of the name, and scroll to find the name. 3. To call the contact, press the call key. 4. Select Details >Options and the action you want to apply to the contact.
Contacts ■ Contacts settings In the standby mode, select Contacts > Settings and one of the following: Contacts view—Specify how names and numbers are shown in contacts list. Memory status—Check how many names and phone numbers are already saved and how many can still be saved in each phone book.
Settings 7. Settings In this menu, you can adjust various phone settings. To reset some menu settings to their default values, select Restore factory set. ■ Tone settings From this menu, you can adjust the ringing volume, keypad tones, and other tone settings for the currently active profile. See Personalize a profile, 30. Select Menu > Settings > Tone settings and one of the following: Ringing tone—Set the tone that you hear when you receive a call.
Settings Menu view > List or Grid—Set the main menu display format. Power saver clock—Set the device to show the digital clock and all the main display icons as a screen saver. The displayed icons indicate missed calls, keypad lock, silent mode, and received messages. Backlight time—Select whether the backlights are switched on for 15 seconds (Normal), for 30 seconds (Extended), or not at all (Off). Even if the backlight is set to off, it stays on for 15 seconds when the device is switched on.
Settings 2. Enter the time for the profile to expire, and select OK. The profile you set for expiration is now active and appears in the standby mode along with a small clock icon. ■ Time settings Select Menu > Settings > Time settings and one of the following: Clock—Set the device to show or hide the current time in the standby mode, adjust the time, and select the 12- or 24-hour time format. If the battery was removed from the device, you may need to set the time and date again.
Settings Int. dial. prefix—Stores an international dialing prefix (this feature is carrier dependent). Enter the international dialing prefix, and select OK. To use the prefix, in the standby mode, press * twice to use +, and enter the phone number. In-call timer—Switch the display of call time On or Off while calling. Calling cards If you use a calling card for long distance calls, save the calling card number in your phone. The phone can store up to four calling cards.
Settings 4. Press the end key to return to the standby mode and enter the phone number, including any prefix (such as 0 or 1) that your calling card may require when you make a calling card call. See your calling card for instructions. 5. Press and hold the call key for a few seconds until Card call is displayed. 6. When you hear the tone or system message, select OK. ■ Phone settings Select Menu > Settings > Phone settings and one of the following: Language—Select a language for the display texts.
Settings Phone lock—Protects your device from unauthorized calls or unauthorized access to information. To select Phone lock, enter the lock code, and press OK. Select Off to immediately switch the phone lock off, Lock now to immediately lock the device, or On power-up to lock the device the next time you turn it on. When the phone is locked, calls still may be possible to the official emergency number programmed into your phone.
Settings 3. At the Feature code: prompt, enter the appropriate feature code (5 characters or less). You can enter other feature codes, or press the end key to return to the standby mode. When you enter a network feature code, the feature is visible in the Call settings menu. Call forward Call forward tells your network to redirect incoming calls to another number. Call forward is a network service and may not work the same in all networks, so contact your wireless provider for availability. 1.

Own number selection To view your own phone number, in the standby mode, select Menu > Settings > Network settings > My number selection. ■ My menu settings When you press the right selection key in the standby mode, the device displays a list of shortcuts to various functions. To define the functions to be shown in this list, select Menu > Settings > R.
Tools and games 8. Tools and games ■ Alarm clock You can set the alarm to sound at the time you want just once or repeatedly (for example, every working day). Select Menu > Alarm clock and one of the following options: Alarm time—Enter the time for the alarm, and select OK. Alarm tone—Choose the tone for the alarm. Repeat alarm—Select Alarm once to set the alarm to sound only once, or Repeat alarm to select the days on which you want the alarm to sound. When the alarm sounds, press the end key to stop it.
Tools and games ■ Reminders You can save short text notes with an alarm. The alarm is activated when the set date and time is reached. Select Menu > Reminders > Add new, View all, Calendar, Delete, or Alarm tone. When the reminder time is reached, to stop the alarm, press the end key. If you select Postp., the alarm sounds again in 10 minutes. While viewing a reminder, you can select Options > Delete or Edit. ■ Games The device has several games. Each game is provided with a brief help text.
Extras 9. Extras ■ Calculator The device is provided with a calculator that can also be used for approximate currency conversions. Select Menu > Extras > Calculator. Note: This calculator has limited accuracy and is designed for simple calculations. Make a calculation 1. Enter the first number in the calculation. Press a number key (1-9) to insert a digit. Press # to insert a decimal point. Select Clear to delete the last digit. To change the sign, press *.
Extras Currency converter To save the exchange rate, select Menu > Extras > Converter > Currency > Convert > In foreign: or In domestic:. Enter the value (press # for a decimal point), and select OK. To make the conversion, enter the currency amount to be converted, and select Currency > To home or To foreign. ■ Spreadsheet The spreadsheet lets you calculate your expenses on a daily or monthly basis.
Extras ■ Countdown timer Timer accuracy is not the same as that of a professional instrument. therefore, Nokia advises against its use for official competitions or any other event in which a high-precision device would be required to establish exact times. You can set an alarm to sound after a period of lapsed time. 1. Select Menu > Extras > Countd. tim. 2. Enter the countdown time (hh:mm), and select OK. 3. Enter a note for the countdown, if desired, and select OK.
Enhancements 10. Enhancements Check the model number of any charger before use with this device. This device is intended for use when supplied with power from charger ACP-7, or other compatible charger. Warning: Use only batteries, chargers, and enhancements approved by Nokia for use with this particular model. The use of any other types may invalidate any approval or warranty, and may be dangerous. For availability of approved enhancements, please check with your dealer.
Battery information 11. Battery information This section provides information about batteries, chargers, safety guidelines and technical information. Be aware that the information in this section is subject to change as batteries and chargers change. ■ Charging and discharging batteries Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The full performance of a new battery is achieved only after two or three complete charge and discharge cycles.
Battery information Do not dispose of batteries in a fire, as they may explode. Batteries may also explode if damaged. Do not provoke short circuits. Do not dispose as household waste. Dispose of batteries according to local regulations. Please recycle when possible. ■ Nokia battery authentication guidelines Always use original Nokia batteries for your safety.
Battery information 3. Scratch the side of the label to reveal a 20-digit code, for example, 12345678919876543210. Turn the battery so that the numbers are facing upwards. The 20-digit code reads starting from the number at the top row followed by the bottom row. 4. Confirm that the 20-digit code is valid by following the instructions at www.nokia.com/batterycheck. To authenticate the code by text message, enter the 20-digit code, for example 12345678919876543210, and send to +61 427151515.
Care and maintenance Care and maintenance Your device is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The suggestions below will help you protect your warranty coverage. • Keep the device and all of its parts and accessories out of the reach of small children. • Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity and all types of liquids or moisture can contain minerals that will corrode electronic circuits.

This device meets RF exposure guidelines when used either in the normal use position against the ear or when positioned at least 1.5 centimeters (5/8 inch) away from the body.

Hearing aids Some digital wireless phones may interfere with some hearing aids. If interference occurs, consult your service provider.

Because of this, connections in all conditions cannot be guaranteed.
