Get started Do not cover the area above the touch screen, for example, with protective film or tape. ■ Insert the UIM card and battery Always switch the device off and disconnect the charger before removing the battery. DR AF T 1. With the back of the device facing you, lift up the back cover with your nail from the right side of your device. 2. Insert your finger into the finger grip, and lift the battery from its compartment. 3.

Insert the tabs at the top of the cover into the slots in the device, and press down on the other end of the back cover. ■ Insert the memory card DR AF T Use only compatible microSD cards approved by Nokia for use with this device. Your device supports microSD cards that have a capacity of up to 16 GB. Nokia uses approved industry standards for memory cards, but some brands may not be fully compatible with this device.
Get started 1. Connect the charger to a wall outlet. 2. Connect the charger to the device. 3. When the device indicates a full charge, disconnect the charger from the device, then from the wall outlet. T You do not need to charge the battery for a specific length of time, and you can use the device while it is charging. If the battery is completely discharged, it may take several minutes before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be made.
Get started ■ Stylus T Some functions, such as handwriting recognition, are designed to be used with a stylus. The pen stylus is located at the left side of the device. DR AF Important: Use only a stylus approved by Nokia for use with this device. Using any other stylus may invalidate any warranty applying to the device and may damage the touch screen. Avoid scratching the touch screen. Never use an actual pen or pencil or other sharp objects to write on the touch screen.
Get started ■ Lock the keys and touch screen The keyguard locks the keys and the touch screen to prevent accidental presses. To lock or unlock the keys and the touch screen, slide the lock switch on the side of the device. DR AF ■ Touch screen actions T To lock the keys and the touch screen automatically when no keys are pressed for a certain length of time, in the home screen, select Menu > Settings > Phone > Automatic keyguard > On, and enter the desired delay time.
Get started Drag To drag, place your finger or the stylus on the screen, and slide it across the screen. For example, To scroll up or down on a web page, drag the page with your finger or stylus. Swipe DR AF Flick T To swipe, slide your finger or the stylus quickly left or right on the screen. For example, when viewing an image, to view the next or previous image, swipe the image left or right, respectively.
Get started ■ Normal operating position Your device has an internal antenna. Use the device only in its normal operating position. DR AF T Note: Your device may have internal and external antennas. As with any radio transmitting device, avoid touching the antenna area unnecessarily while the antenna is transmitting or receiving. Contact with such an antenna affects the communication quality and may cause the device to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed and may reduce the battery life.
Get started • Close applications and data connections, for example, your Bluetooth connection, when not in use. • Decrease the brightness of the screen. • Set the device to enter the power saver mode after the minimum period of inactivity if available in your device. • Deactivate unnecessary sounds, such as key tones. Your device 2. Your device ■ Home screen Home screen is your starting point where you can collect your important contacts or application shortcuts. Interactive display elements DR AF T 1. Clock — To open the alarm clock, tap the clock. 2. Calendar — To open the calendar application, tap the date. 3. Contacts bar — To add or use the contact, tap the corresponding icon. 4. Music player — To run the music player, tap the corresponding icon. 5.
Your device Start using contacts bar To start using the contacts bar and add your contacts to the home screen, in the home screen, select and the desired contact from contacts list. Activate and personalise the home screen To switch the home screen on, select Menu > Settings > Display > Home Screen > Home screen mode > On. Call functions 3. Call functions ■ Proximity sensor ■ Make or answer a call T Your device has a proximity sensor. To prevent accidental selections, the touch screen is disabled automatically during calls when you place the device next to your ear. DR AF 1. In the home screen, enter the phone number, including the country code and area code, if necessary. 2. Press the call key. 3. To end the call or to cancel the call attempt, press the end key. To answer a call, press the call key.
Call functions ■ In-call voice recording DR AF T To recording a phone call, during the call, select Options > Record call and the record icon . To stop recording, select the stop icon . The file is saved in the Recordings folder in Gallery.
Write text 4. Write text The input methods described in this section may not be applicable to third-party applications, for example, dictionary. DR AF T When the slide is open, you can enter texts with traditional keypad or handwriting mode. When the slide is closed, you can enter texts with virtual keypad or handwriting mode. You may tap the text input field to activate the method used last time. To switch from traditional or virtual keypad to handwriting mode, select .
Write text ■ Handwriting Write legible, upright characters on the text input area. Only one character can be recognised at a time. Write text ■ Traditional keypad Pinyin input method The pinyin symbols are printed on the number keys. You only need to press a key once, regardless of the position of the symbol on the number key. The phone makes logical combinations of the pinyin symbols. To input a character using the pinyin input method: T 1. Press the number key once for each pinyin symbol you want to input (use "v" for "u"). DR AF 2. Press 1 repeatedly until you get the desired tone mark. 3.
Write text DR AF T The strokes are classified according to the following table: To use the stroke input method: 1. In the standard stroke order, press the number keys to input the strokes. Tip: if you are not sure which stroke to use or which category it belongs to, press 6 to substitute that stroke, then continue with the subsequent strokes. A question mark appears in the input area to represent that stroke. 2. Scroll to the desired Chinese character, and select OK.
Write text 1. Press the relevant number keys to enter the syllable or pinyin initial, or first strokes for the first character of the phrase. 2. Press 0 to enter a separator; or, if in the pinyin mode, press 1 repeatedly to enter the tone mark of the character you want. 3. Enter the syllable or pinyin initial, or first strokes of the next Chinese character. 4. Repeat step 2 and 3, if necessary, to enter the syllables or pinyin initials, or first strokes of all the characters in the phrase. DR AF T 5.
Write text Set predictive English input on or off When writing in English, press and hold #, and select Prediction on or Prediction off. Traditional English input Press a number key (2 to 9) repeatedly until the desired character is displayed. T If the next letter is located on the same key as the present one, wait until the cursor appears, or scroll right, and enter the letter. DR AF Not all characters available under a number key are printed on the key.
Write text select Spell. Enter the word using traditional text input, and select Save. To write compound words, enter the first part of the word, and scroll right to confirm it. Write the second part of the word, and confirm the word. 3. Start writing the next word. Tips for writing text T The following functions may also be available for writing text: DR AF • To insert a number when no input symbol is displayed, press and hold the desired number key.
Menu functions 5. Menu functions The device functions are grouped into menus. Not all menu functions or option items are described here. In the home screen, select Menu, and tap the desired menu item. To exit the current menu level, select Exit or Back. To return to the home screen, press the end key. DR AF T To provide a visual representation of your current position in the menu structure, a scroll bar may be displayed on the right side of the screen.
Menu functions Write and send a multimedia message Only devices that have compatible features can receive and display multimedia messages. The appearance of a message may vary depending on the receiving device. The wireless network may limit the size of MMS messages. If the inserted picture exceeds this limit, the device may make it smaller so that it can be sent by MMS. 1. Select Menu > Messaging > Multim. Messages > Create message. T 2. Select Options > Add object, a multimedia folder, and a file.

Select Sending options and from the following: • Priority — Send text messages with normal priority or as urgent. • Delivery reports — Receive confirmation when your message is delivered. • Message validity — Set the period of validity of a messaging request. Menu functions • Incoming MMS msgs. — Select to retrieve incoming multimedia messages automatically, manually, or not at all. • Allow adverts — Block or allow advertisements sent as multimedia messages. • Delivery report reject — Stop your device sending delivery reports of received messages. • Message validity — Set the period of validity of a messaging request. DR AF Voice messages T • Access points — Select access points for MMS.
Menu functions Browser messages With Browser (network service), you can access web services offered and updated by service providers. Select Menu > Messaging > Browser msgs.. DR AF ■ Contacts T Important: Exercise caution when opening messages. Messages may contain malicious software or otherwise be harmful to your device or PC. Save and edit names and numbers To add a new contact, select Menu > Contacts > Names > Add (if the contacts list is empty) or Options > Add new contact.
Menu functions Personal information management (PIM) You can back up contacts in your device to China Telecom’s PIM website and restore from the website when needed (network service). Select Menu > Contacts > PIM. Groups Speed dials T For detail information, please refer to "Groups", p. 33. DR AF To activate or deactivate speed dialling, see "Call", p. 40. To assign a phone number to a speed dialling slot, select Menu > Contacts > Speed dials, an empty speed dialling slot, and Assign.

For availability of the services, pricing, tariffs, and instructions, contact your service provider. ■ Settings Profiles DR AF T You can use profiles to set and customise the ringing tones, message alert tones, and other tones for different events or caller groups.
Menu functions Display Select Menu > Settings > Display and from the following: • Backlight time-out — Set the length of time after which the backlight is switched off. • Home screen — Activate and personalise the home screen. Touch input T Select Menu > Settings > Touch input and from the following: DR AF • Screen calibration — The screen is calibrated at the factory. If it is necessary to recalibrate the screen, follow the instruction. • Vibration feedback — Set the vibration strength.
Menu functions To select a function from the list for the key you want to assign the shortcut to, select Menu > Settings > My shortcuts, the key, and the function. Connectivity At Nokia, we understand how important it is that your mobile phone or device operates reliably and that your personal content is saved safely. DR AF T Any information from an unknown or unreliable source, via Bluetooth connectivity, multimedia message, or data cable, may harm your PC, mobile phone, or device.
Menu functions This device is compliant with Bluetooth Specification 2.1 with EDR and supports the following profiles: Advance Audio Distribution Profile, A/V Remote Control, Basic Printing Profile, Dial-up Networking, File Transfer Profile, Generic A/V Dist. Profile, Hands Free Profile, Headset Profile, Object Push Profile, and Phone Book Access Profile. To ensure interoperability between other devices supporting Bluetooth technology, use Nokia approved accessories for this model.
Menu functions You may find Nokia PC Suite and related information at product support pages on the Nokia website. Important: To make a phone call, disconnect the USB data cable. To transfer data, connect the data USB cable, and select Menu > Settings > Connectivity > USB data cable and from the following: • Ask on conn. — Set the device to ask which mode to use, each time the cable is connected. • PC Suite — Use the data cable connection for Nokia PC Suite.
Menu functions • Calling card — Save up to four calling card numbers in your device, to use for long distance calls. • Abbreviated dialling — Program a 5-6 digit prefix for commonly used phone numbers. • Preferred carrier — Select the preferred long distance carrier. • International prefix — Make calls using the + sign as the international prefix. The device replaces the + sign in a saved phone number when making a call.
Menu functions • Automatic keyguard — Set the keypad to lock automatically after a preset length of time. • DTMF tones — Dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) is used by the telephone system to recognise the keys pressed when dialling (for example, telephone banking and help desk). Activate DTMF tones and set the tone duration. • Phone updates — Update the device with the latest software available (network service).
Menu functions • Wap Pull Position — Allow, reject or ask confirmation for WAP pull (network service). Voice commands To activate voice commands, in the home screen, select Menu > Voice command and say a command. T Note: Using voice tags may be difficult in a noisy environment or during an emergency, so you should not rely solely upon voice dialling in all circumstances.
Menu functions Network The Network menu allows you to customise how your device chooses which network to operate in while you are within or away from your primary or home network. Your device is set to search for the most effective network. To set which network to use when the device cannot find a preferred network, select Menu > Settings > Network > Set mode and a mode. T Network services DR AF To view the network services available on your device, select Menu > Settings > Network services.
Menu functions Restore factory settings Select Menu > Settings > Rest. factory sett. and from the following: • Restore settings only — Reset some menu settings. • Restore all — Restore all settings and delete personal data. ■ Gallery T Copyright protections may prevent some images, music (including ringing tones), and other content from being copied, modified, transferred or forwarded. DR AF Manage multimedia files and received files.
Menu functions To view the list of folders, select Menu > Gallery. ■ Media Camera and Video You can capture images and record video clips with the built-in 5.0 megapixel camera. T To capture an image or record a video clip, in the home screen, select Menu > Media > Camera or Video, and select Capture or Record. DR AF The image captured is saved in the Image folder of Gallery in the JPEG format. The video clip recorded is saved in the Video clips folder of Gallery in the 3GP format.
Menu functions To play an audio or video playback, select Menu > Media > Media player, a multimedia folder, and the desired playback. To adjust the volume level, use the volume keys of the device. Operate the music player with the virtual keys on the display. To pause playback, tap ; to resume, tap . To fast-forward or rewind, or . To go to the next item, tap . To return to the tap and hold . To skip to the previous item, tap twice.
Menu functions To access more options while listening to the radio, select Options and from the following: • Switch off — Turn off the radio. • Search all stations — Automatically search for all available stations at your location. • Save station — Name and save current frequency, if different from any saved station, as a new radio station. • Stations — View or select from the list of saved radio stations. T • Set frequency — Enter the frequency of the desired radio station.
Menu functions Equaliser The equaliser enhances the sound quality when using the music player. To use a preset setting when playing music, select Menu > Media > Equaliser, an equaliser set, and Activate. ■ Organiser Alarm clock T Select Menu > Organiser > Alarm Clock. DR AF To set the alarm, enter the alarm time, and select and Save. To set your device to alart you on selected days of the week, select Settings, set Repeat as On, and select days under Repeat days.
Menu functions To switch between month, week, and to-do note view, select Options > Month view, Week view, or Go to to-do list. To go to a specific date in the calendar view, select Options > Go to date. To access more options while viewing the calendar, select Options. Lunar calendar To use the lunar calendar, the device language must be Chinese. T To view lunar details of the highlighted day, in the month view, select Options > Lunar calendar.
Menu functions ■ Applications Communication assistant Communication assistant allows you to block and retrieve unwanted messages or calls. Select Menu > Applications > Communication Asst.. E-mail mailbox DR AF T E-mail mailbox (network service) allows you to set up your e-mail account and read e-mail messages on your device. Select Menu > Applications > E-mail mailbox. Important: Exercise caution when opening messages.

QQ Farm QQ farm (network service) helps user to maintain contact with family members or friends. Expense Manager T Select Menu > Applications > QQ Farm. DR AF To record all your incomes and expenses, select Menu > Applications > Expense Manager. ■ E-book Player To read or listen to e-books in the TXT format, select Menu > E-book Player.

Battery and charger information 7. Battery and charger information Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The battery intended for use with this device is BL-5F Li-lon battery. This device is intended for use when supplied with power from the following charger: AC-8C. The exact charger model number may vary depending on the type of plug. The plug variant is identified by one of the following: E, EB, X, AR, U, A,C or UB.
Battery and charger information Always try to keep the battery between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F). Extreme temperatures reduce the capacity and lifetime of the battery. A device with a hot or cold battery may not work temporarily. Battery performance is particularly limited in temperatures well below freezing. T Do not short-circuit the battery.

Care and maintenance Care and maintenance Your device is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The following suggestions will help you protect your warranty coverage. T • Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity, and all types of liquids or moisture can contain minerals that will corrode electronic circuits. If your device does get wet, remove the battery, and allow the device to dry completely before replacing it.

Unauthorised antennas, modifications, or attachments could damage the device and may violate regulations governing radio devices. • Use chargers indoors. • Always create a backup of data you want to keep, such as contacts and calendar notes. • To reset the device from time to time for optimum performance, power off the device and remove the battery.
