• In a group—to select a type of name to identify you to a group. Your user name, a unique name that identifies you to the
IM service, cannot be changed.
• Screen name—to type a screen name up to 10 characters.
Reviewing group chat history
To retrieve the past 20 messages when you join an IM group chat, press Menu, select View → Groups, then press Menu, and
select Tools → Preferences > Chat history. Chat history is a quick way to catch up to the current discussion.
Defining basic properties for an IM group
To set the basic properties for an IM group chat, press Menu, and select View → Groups → Group properties, and select the
Basics page.
Select:
• Group name—to type the name for this group. The name can be up to 50 characters.
• Discussion topic—to type the subject that you would like to discuss in group chats. The topic can be up to 50 characters.
• Welcome note—to type a note that displays to users when they join the group. The note can be up to 100 characters.
Defining access properties for an IM group
To set the access properties for an IM group chat, press Menu, and select View → Groups → Group properties, and select the
Group access page.
Select:
• Group membership—to allow access to your IM group. Select Open to invited friends to restrict membership to contacts
that you invite. Select Open to all to allow any user in the online community to join the group and to allow users to invite
a friend into the group. You may open membership to everyone but later ban individual users from the group.
• Group size—to set the maximum group size. If group membership open to everyone, type a maximum number of users
that may participate in a group chat. Too many active users in a group chat can make it difficult to participate or to follow
the discussion.
• Allow all to search group—to allow other users to find your group with a keyword search. To reduce the number of
uninvited guests, turn off group search.
• Allow whispering—to allow whispering, or private conversations between group members, during a group chat. Turn off
whispering to force all messages to display to the group.
