Automotive Ambient RGB LED
RGB (red, green, blue) LEDs can be used in a variety of automotive lighting
applications. A PIC microcontroller with LED driver capability having at
least three output channels can be used to control a RGB LED, allowing it
to change color and brightness on the go. Such PIC microcontrollers can
be used to set a specific interior color scheme that highlights the unique
ambient look and feel of a car model. RGB LEDs can also be dimmed to
serve as lighting at night without being too bright or intrusive to the driver.
Each RGB LED node is connected to a LIN bus as slave. The LIN master
node controls each slave’s color profile. Each LIN bus contains one master
and up to 15 slaves. More than one LIN bus should be used to control a
large quantity of RGB LEDs.
Typical Applications
■ Footwell lights
■ Cup holder lights
■ Tell tale lights
■ Cluster backlighting
■ Capacitive touch backlighting
■ LCD panel backlighting
