3.4.2 Filling the MME with mercury
When handling mercury, it is necessary to take special precautionary
measures. These are described in detail in section 7.2.
All actions involving the electrode and mercury vessels must be
performed in or over the drip pan 113113 supplied (see Fig. 14).
The Hg reservoir 103103 of the multi-mode electrode 3838 is filled with mercury of the
highest degree of purity (mass fraction w 0.99999) as follows:
1
Prepare multi-mode electrode
Unscrew locking ring 9595 from slotted screw 9696 (this gray PVC ring is
needed only to remove the slotted screws 9696 or 101101, see section 3.4.7
and section 3.4.9).
Turn slotted screw 9696 in or out of the screw thread 9898 using a suitable
coin until the contact surface of the black O-ring at the Plexiglas wall (thin,
black stripe) is just visible below the metal thread 9898.
Remove the plastic cap used as a transport safeguard from the retaining
nut 108108.
Undo retaining nut 108108 fully and remove from screw thread 104104.
Place multi-mode electrode 3838 with the capillary opening facing upwards
in the electrode holder 114114 (see Fig. 13).
