10 DIRECT RADIO COMMUNICATIONS GUIDE
10.1 Overview
In units with firmware version V2.4 or later, a special diagnostic mode allows an RS-232
dumb terminal, or a personal computer with a terminal emulation program such as
HyperTerminal, to communicate directly with the Motorola cellular radio. This feature is
generally used for troubleshooting and should only be performed by persons with
knowledge of the radio’s operation and command set.
10.2 Required Materials
Metretek’s MP32 configuration software, Version 3.4.8 or later. This is only
needed if the existing DCM-200’s firmware is revision V2.3 or earlier.
Programming adapter cable as illustrated back in Figure 2-1. Metretek part
number 1002-0299C-001.
An RS-232 serial dumb terminal or a personal computer with an unused serial
com port, capable of 19,200 baud operation. If using a computer it should have a
terminal-emulation program such as HyperTerminal or ProComm.
A 3-wire RS-232 cable that connects to the computer or dumb terminal’s serial
port and supports receive (Rx), transmit (Tx) and signal common (ground)
signals. The three wires should be stripped back 1/8” and will be inserted into
the DCM-200’s communications terminal block.
10.3 Wiring the Computer to the DCM-200’s Communications Port
A minimum of three lines is required for the connection between the DCM-200 and the
computer or dumb terminal: a line to transmit data to the DCM-200, one to receive data
from the DCM-200, and common. The DCM-200 does not support hardware
handshaking.
