Installing the RS-232 to RJ-11 Adapter Board
Cable Preparation
If the cable coming from the electric meter is not already terminated into an RJ-11
connector, then refer to Figure 2-10 and do the following:
1) Cut the end of the cable to the desired length, while ensuring that the end is trimmed
in a ‘squared-off’ manner, and not at an angle.
2) Strip-off 1/4 inch of outer insulation from the cable and insert it into the housing as
shown in Figure 2-10. The end with the black wire must insert exactly as shown in the
illustration.
3) Perform the crimping operation with the RJ-11 crimping tool.
Each manufacturer may use different wire assignments. It may be necessary to
rearrange the order of the four wires before inserting them into the RJ-11 plug. For
instance, this is the wiring assignment for the Elster Alpha series:
Position
Color Function
1 Black Not Connected
2 Red RXD (Receive)
3 Green GND (Ground)
4 Yellow TXD (Transmit)
In the case of the Elster Alpha series, the black wire of the data cable must insert into
the RJ-11 connector housing as shown in Figure 2-10. Failure to assemble the cable
correctly will block the exchange of serial data between the meter and DCM-200.
