Safety
In an accident: PRE-SAFE® impulse (standard). Both the
driver and front passenger are exposed to great stresses
in a frontal collision. In the early phase of the collision,
PRE-SAFE® impulse tightens the safety belts for the front
seats. The front occupants are therefore moved in the
opposite direction to the crash direction and pulled deeper
into their seats. At the point of greatest stress the energy
is reduced in a controlled manner and the belt is loosened
again. This pre-acceleration and force limitation momentarily
remove the occupants from the force of the crash. In this
way, PRE-SAFE® impulse considerably reduces the risk of
injury.
After an accident: Mercedes-Benz emergency call system
(Mercedes-Benz Connect technology, part of COMAND
Online). The system can send an automatic emergency call
via an operational telephone connected to the vehicle as
soon as the restraint system detects an accident. At the same
time GPS positioning data and other information on the
vehicle are transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz emergency
call centre. A voice connection is then established, and
the subsequent conversation can be held in the occupants’
mother tongue in nearly all cases. This makes it easier
to initiate measures to save, recover or tow the vehicle to
a Mercedes-Benz Service Support Point quickly.
Measures after an accident. In order to reduce conse-
quential damage and, where necessary, to support the
rescue of the occupants, Mercedes-Benz has developed
further measures. These include the automatic engine
cut-off or the activation of the hazard warning lamps and
the emergency interior lighting. The central locking also
opens auto matically, and crash joints between the door
and the wing make it easier to open the doors after an
accident. In addition Mercedes-Benz makes Guidelines for
Rescue Services available; helpers can download them
in different languages all over the world from the internet
at www.mercedes-benz.de/rettungsleitfaden. As you can
see, at Mercedes-Benz consideration has been given to
safety in every situation.
In an accident: airbags (standard). The new S-Class has
eight airbags in total. In addition to the impact bags, there
are sidebags and windowbags for the driver and front
passenger. There are also sidebags in the rear and optional
beltbags for the outer rear seats. The beltbag, a type of
inflatable seat belt strap, reduces the strain on the chest
in a collision. If there is an accident, the beltbag strap
inflates to some three times its normal width. This spreads
the force impacting on the occupants over a greater area,
thereby reducing the strain to the chest area.
PRE-SAFE® impulse: the front seat belts can propel the front occupants away
from the collision direction in the early stages of impact.
A total of eight airbags can protect you and other vehicle occupants in the
event of an accident.
