Be Safe With Alcohol-Based Hand Antiseptic
There are distinct dispenser size and installation requirements that your Medline
representative can discuss upon request, but here are a few to keep in mind.
Alcohol-based antiseptics (sanitizers) should be stored away from high temperatures
or fl ames. State and local fi re codes vary and should always take precedence at your
facility. However, the National Fire Protection Agency’s Life Safety Code (2009) makes
these recommendations:
Corridors where dispensers are installed must be at least 6 feet wide.
Dispenser capacity should be 1.2 L or less in rooms and corridors
and 2.0 L or less in suites of rooms.
Dispensers must be located at least 4 feet from each other and
never near an ignition source.
Dispensers over carpeted surfaces are allowed only when the area is sprinklered.
No more than an aggregate of 10 gallons of sanitizer can be in use
in a single smoke compartment.
More than 5 gallons stored in a single smoke compartment must comply
with NFPA 30 Flammable and Combustible Liquids code.
