HAND HYGIENE IMPROVEMENT
1. SYSTEM CHANGE. Ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place to allow health-care workers to
practice hand hygiene. Build a network of hand hygiene sites that are as near to the point-of-care as possible.
2. TRAINING & EDUCATION. Implement training programs on the how, when and why of hand hygiene.
See that caregivers understand the reason for hand hygiene is improving patient outcomes.
3. EVALUATION & FEEDBACK. Monitor your individual and overall hand hygiene compliance,
provide prompt feedback and report trends over time.
4. REMINDERS. Prompt and remind health-care workers about the importance of hand hygiene and
about the appropriate indications and procedures for performing it.
5. CLIMATE OF SAFETY.
Create an environment that promotes hand hygiene and makes it the social
norm while guaranteeing consideration of hand hygiene improvement as a high priority at all levels.
