Tentative Final Monograph for HealthCare Antiseptic Drug
Products (TFM): The FDA’s TFM minimum performance
criteria for surgical hand antisepsis are a 1-log (90%)
reduction after one minute on day one, a 2-log (99%)
reduction after 1 minute on day two, and a 3-log (99.9%)
reduction after one minute on day fi ve. Moreover, the
bacterial counts shall not exceed baseline within six hours
on day one.

Steps for Using Surgical Hand Scrub
Prior to fi rst case of the day...
1. Remove rings, watches and other jewelry.
2. Use a nail pick (keep nails short, no artifi cial nails)
to remove debris.
3. Scrub hands and forearms with either an antimicrobial
or plain soap according to manufacturer-recommendation.
4. Apply an alcohol-based surgical scrub.
5. Don sterile gloves.
Then continue to repeat steps 4-5
throughout the remainder of the day.
