5. Step 2 of the Setup Wizard is asking for my “Connection Type”. How can I tell?
Step 2 of the Setup Wizard will ask what your Connection Type is. Most likely your connection
type is Dynamic IP as it is the most common type. The next most common type is DSL (or
ADSL Virtual Dial-Up via PPPoE), which sometimes requires additional configuration to your
modem prior to setting up your router. (Please see Question 8 of this FAQ.) Connection types
such as Static IP, PPTP, and L2TP are special services that cost an extra fee through your
internet service provider so you will be aware if this should be your selection in Step 2 of the
Setup Wizard.
6. I can’t connect to the internet when my computer is plugged into the router (or) An IP
Address does not appear on the screen during Step 5 of the EZ Connect Setup Wizard.
Your modem MUST be completely reset to “forget” any device that it was previously connected
to. Start the process again from the beginning by powering down and unplugging the computer,
router and modem. Carefully check the modem to see if there is a reset button and/or batteries.
If there is a reset button, press and hold it for 8-10 seconds, unplug the power adapter from the
wall while you are holding in the reset button, and then continue to hold in the button for a few
seconds after the power adapter has been unplugged. If there are batteries, be sure to remove
them for 30 seconds. If there is no reset button or batteries, you may have to leave the modem
unplugged for several minutes. Check your modem’s user manual to be sure. Once you are
sure the modem has completely reset, follow the rest of the instructions on the Quick Installation
Guide starting at Step 3 and try using the web-based interface to configure the router instead of
inserting the CD. (See Step 9 of the Quick Installation Guide)
7. I reset the modem but I still can’t connect via a wired connection.
First, check your connections to be sure the cables are plugged into the correct ports and that
the cables are fully inserted. If you are still not able to access the internet, check to see if you
can access the router’s settings page. Open an internet browser (ie: Internet Explorer, Firefox or
Safari). Click in the address bar and type the IP address of the router (the default IP Address is
192.168.0.1). If you are able to access the router, you will be prompted for the Username and
Password (default is “admin” for both). If you are able to access the router’s settings page but
cannot access the internet, the problem may be due to the same IP address being used by both
your modem and your router so you will need to change it, Within the settings page of the router
click on “Advanced Settings”, change the IP Address to 192.168.2.1, and then click “Apply”. The
router will reboot. When finished, reboot the computer.
8. I have a DSL (PPPoE) connection and I cannot access the internet.
With a PPPoE connection, the modem typically must be set to “bridged” mode before you can
configure your router. To do this, remove your router from the configuration and have your
modem directly connected to your computer. Consult your modem’s user manual for instructions
on setting it to bridged. Typically this involves accessing the modem through the modem’s
default IP address, clicking on Advanced Settings, then clicking WAN IP Address, then selecting
