CONCRETE BLOCK
by
Stone Mortar Mix
Menards Sku# 189-1070
This versatile product may be used as a base coat, in
applying mortar to the back coat, in applying mortar to the
back of the stone, or joint grouting.
• Stone veneer base coat application and joint grouting
• Applying precast masonry veneer, thin natural stone
veneer or thin brickunits to base surfaces
Advantages
• Preblended mortar - just add water
• Consistent workability & optimal bond strength
• Freeze-thaw resistance
Product Description
Prior to installation, all surfaces should be washed and
clean of dust and debris, before applying mortar. A water
resistant barrier should be applied to other surfaces other
then concrete masonry. If the concrete masonry surface
is painted, sealed or treated, it must be cleaned back to
the original surface. For sheetrock, wallboard paneling,
plywood or other rigid wood-related sheathing, install a
25 lb (or heavier) diamond mesh expanded metal lath. A
galvanized lath should be used for exterior applications.
The lath should be overlapped by no less than 3/8" and
lath ends by no less than 1". Then apply a ½" thick
scratch coat of mortar over the metal lath and allow it to
set.
Stone Mortar Mix is a specially formulated product for use
in setting natural or manufactured stone, 1/2" face brick
of 1/2" brick veneer. Meets or exceeds ASTM C-270.

Machine Mixing Instructions
Installation
Preparatory Work
• Empty mortar bags into a suitable mixing container.
• Add approximately 1 gallon (3.7 L) of clean water for
each 60 lb (27.2 kg) bag.
• Work the mix with a shovel, rake or hoe and add
water as needed until a stiff, moldable consistency is
achieved.
• If needed, add small amounts of additional water to a
stiffen mix.
• Be sure all material is wet. Do not leave standing
puddles.
Hand Mixing Instructions
Weight-Unit: 60 lb (27.2kg)

Yield: Approximately 0.45 cu ft (12.7L)
Bagging Specications
Stone Mortar Mix can be mixed by hand or machine
• Add approximately 7 pints (3.3 L) of clean mixing
water into the mixing container for each 60 lb (27.2
kg) bag. Slowly pour the contents of the bags into the
mixing water. Mix until a rm, workable consistency
is achieved.
• If more water is needed, add small amounts at a time
and continue to mix until the desired consistency is
achieved. Do not exceed a total volume of 10.5 pints (5
L) or water for each 60 lb (27.2 kg) bag.
Pro-Tip: Color can be added by using concrete and
mortar colorant. To achieve consistent color, use one pint
of colorant per each bag of Stone Mortar Mix.

Applicable Standards
ASTM International - ASTM C270 Standard Specication
for mortar unit masonry.
Application
• In typical stone veneer applications, a ½" base coat of
mortar is applied to the surface and allowed to set per
the selected stone manufacturer’s recommendation.
This is followed by a ½” thick layer of mortar applied
to the back of the stone. Press the stone rmly into
place so that the mortar behind the stone squeezes out
on all sides. If required, you may ll the joints between
stones with a ¼" of mortar.
