8. Danger:
The use of alcohol, drugs or medication before or during spa use may lead to unconscious-
ness with the possibility of drowning. Persons suffering from obesity, medical history of heart
disease, low/high blood pressure, circulatory system problems or diabetes, should consult a
physician before using a spa. Persons using medication should consult a physician before
using a spa because some medications induce drowsiness while others may affect heart rate,
blood pressure and circulation.
9. Danger:
Prolonged immersion in hot water may induce hyperthermia. The causes and effects of hyper-
thermia may be described as follows: Hyperthermia occurs when the internal temperature of
the body reaches a level several degrees above the normal body temperature of 98.6ºF(37ºC).
The effects of hyperthermia include:
a. Failure to perceive heat.
b. Failure to recognize the need to exit the spa or hot tub.
c. Unawareness of potential hazards.
d. Fetal injury in pregnant women.
e. Physical inability to exit the spa or hot tub.
f. Unconsciousness resulting in the danger of drowning.
Warning - The use of alcohol, drugs or medication can greatly
increase the risk of fatal hyperthermia.
