SURFACE PREPARATION
All suitable substrates must be smooth, structurally sound and free of any substance that
could prevent adhesion.
Do not use chemical means (acid etching or stripping) to prepare approved substrates.
Use mechanical methods only.
To remove any bond-inhibiting materials, concrete substrates should be mechanically
cleaned and prepared by diamond-cup grinding or other engineer-approved methods to
obtain the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) concrete surface prole (CSP)
of #2. When concrete requires more mechanical preparation, the prole will typically
increase. In such cases, the surface can be made smooth by applying coats of MAPEI’s
Planipatch
®
.
For other important surface preparation instructions, see individual TDSs for MAPEI
peel-and-stick sheet membranes. For other details, see MAPEI’s “Surface Preparation
Requirements” document for tile and stone installation systems at www.mapei.com or
contact MAPEI Technical Services Department.
PRODUCT APPLICATION
1. When substrate and ambient temperatures are between 40°F and 95°F (4°C and 35°C),
apply primer to clean substrate with a roller or brush to achieve full substrate coverage.
Do not dilute primer.
2. Let dry about 10 to 15 minutes (or until tacky) before installing the membrane.
For complete instructions, see TDSs for MAPEI peel-and-stick membranes.
EXPANSION AND CONTROL JOINTS
1. Do not cover any substrate expansion joint or control joints with mortar or tiles.
Provide for expansion and control joints where specied per Detail EJ-171 of the most
current TCA handbook for ceramic tile installation, or Detail 301MJ of the TTMAC Tile
Installation Manual.
2. Protect tilework with metal strips (edge metal) along both edges of structural building
expansion joints.
3. When necessary, cut tiles along both edges of the expansion joints. Do not allow tile and
mortar to overlap the joints.
4. Install the specied compressible bead and sealant into all expansion and control joints.
CLEANUP
Use mineral spirits to remove excess MAPEI SM Primer from tools, equipment or other
nonporous surfaces.
PROTECTION
Do not allow MAPEI SM Primer to freeze in pail.
Do not store MAPEI SM Primer in direct sunlight.
Protect MAPEI SM Primer from spills, contamination and damage before and during
peel-and-stick membrane application to ensure a positive bond with membrane.
