Mantel Shelf Installation

Tools and Materials needed for Installation

5/16” Hex Head Driver Bit

3/16” Wood Drill Bit

3/16” Masonry Drill Bit (if mounting on masonry wall)

Phillips Head Screwdriver

Shelf Installation: ( note: you may want to pre-finish the shelf before installation )

Step 1 - Place and level shelf at the desired height on the wall and lightly draw a line along the top of the shelf

and at the ends as shown below.

1. Mark where Shelf will install Marks on wall

Step 2 – Find the position of the studs in the wall and mark where they are located. Install the 1” x 1” x 48”

Mounting Strip 1/2” below the marked desired height. Make sure it is centered between the two end marks.

Drill a 3/16” hole in the Mounting Strip at the stud locations and attach the Mounting Strip using a 5/16” Hex

Head Driver Bit and the Heavy Duty Hex Head Screws provided. If mounting into a masonry wall, drill mount

holes 6” from each end of the Mount Strip using a 3/16” Wood Drill Bit, then pre-drill masonry wall through

mount strip holes using a 3/16” Masonry Drill Bit. Secure with the Heavy Duty Hex Head Screws provided.

2. Install Mounting Strip to wall

Step 3 – After mounting strip is installed, drill two 3/16” holes along back edge of shelf. The holes should be

1/2” from back edge and spaced approximately 18” to the left and right of center (make sure holes will be over

the Mounting Strip). Add Construction Adhesive to the top of the mounting strip before sliding the Shelf over

Mounting Strip. Secure Shelf to the Mounting Strip with using the two Phillips head screws provided.

Alternate installation method using nails – Use construction adhesive as above and Drill (4) - 1/16” holes

along back edge of the Shelf. Attach the Shelf onto the Mounting Strip using (4) - #4 Finishing Nails. Use a

Nail Set to sink the nail below the surface of the wood. Use caulk or wood putty to fill the nail holes.

3. Install Shelf to wall

Set aside for step 4. 8" Cut Step 2 – Position long section of moulding on the shelf, center on shelf to equal lengths from the end of the shelf to the first dado on the moulding (shown below). From the back side, mark cut marks on moulding where the shelf ends.
