Experiment
It is said that hydrogen promises future human mobility. A fuel cell transforms hydrogen and oxygen envi-
ronmentally neutral in water and generates electricity during this process. It is used to drive electro vehicles.
The common method used to mass produce hydrogen is via the electrolysis of water, that is the separation
of water molecules into the two components hydrogen and oxygen by means of electrical energy. Fill a glass
with tap water and build the circuit as described above. As soon as the solar cell is exposed to strong light,
gas bubbles flow up the electrode. Hydrogen gas is generated at the electrode connected to the negative ter-
minal. The reaction is even more potent ,if you add a small bit of washing powder to the tap water. Oxygen
is generated at the positive electrode. The moving-coil instrument signals by a clear needle deflection that
current is flowing. This method of producing hydrogen is environmentally friendly especially because the
electricity gained is also environmentally neutral.
The circuit diagram for this experiment is shown in Chap. 3, Fig. 3.218.
