Advanced use of Repeating Objects
You can also make any item a repeating item by giving it a special 'LiveCopy:' name. This may be useful
if, for example, you want an object to repeat only on a selected number of pages, and naming it is easier
than deleting the instances you don't want.
Right click the object and choose Names or click the Apply
name button on the right end of the Selector Tool InfoBar.
Give it a name that starts
LiveCopy:'. This must
be followed by a unique
name for that item.
Click the Add button to
apply the name.
If you want this object to be
updated on many pages, right
click it and choose Repeat on
all pages. Or use the "
Arrange" > "Repeat on all
pages"
menu option.
Now when you edit or make any change to that item, all copies will be updated.
Note:
This feature updates all repeating items from the current page onto all other pages that contain those
same repeating items. I.E. Only pages that contain the repeating item will be updated (it doesn't place the
items on blank pages).
Technical note
: This feature works by identifying items with the LiveCopy: name and then replacing them with the
corresponding items from the source page (the selected page).
The selected page is the one you're working on, and it shows with
these items around the page corners.
If you use the Repeat on all pages
option this automatically creates an appropriate LiveCopy:AutoRepeat name and applies it to all copies.
You can apply the LiveCopy name to any selection, for example, a group of buttons, by selecting all the
buttons and applying the name to the whole selection at once. But note that if you want different objects
in different parts of the page to be treated separately, such as headers and footer, they should each have
a different LiveCopy name e.g. LiveCopy:footer
Stopping objects repeating
Right click an object and choose Stop updating to turn off the repeating nature of an object, or all of its
copies in your website. Choosing Stop updating from the Arrange menu also allows this.
You'll be asked whether you want to just stop the selected object repeating or all copies of the object in
the website. Choose the All
option. Now the different copies of that object can be independently edited and the next time one is
changed it won't update any of them.
Use this if, for example, you've used Repeat on all pages
to copy an object to all pages of your website, but then you want to make those objects different on
each page so that they are no longer tied together.
Stop updating is also useful if you want to make a copy of a repeating object (eg. a footer or logo) on
