Scrubbing
Scrubbing is the ability to quickly move through the audio material for preview purposes. This is similar to
switching a reel-to-reel tape machine into the edit mode in which the motors are disengaged from the
transports and the reels can be turned by hand. However, the playback heads are still engaged and as the
reels are turned by hand, the audio is played back with the speed of the movement of the reels. This
enables you to quickly move to a position in the audio material or preview edits with a very slow speed.
Scrubbing in the digital world is a bit more complicated, since there are no real mechanics involved and a
subsequent ‘passing by’
of audio is achieved using different methods.
MAGIX music editor 2 accomplishes scrubbing by performing what is called ‘Varipitch’
real time sample rate conversion, which means that the pitch of the audio is increased or decreased,
while the playback speed stays the same. This effectively speeds up or slows the scrubbing speed. To
test the theory behind the varipitch function is to take a 44.1 kHz sample and convert it to a 48 kHz
sample without doing time stretching. The pitch will go up and the overall length of the audio material
shortens. However, the internal playback rate stays the same.
The rate of the sample conversion depends on the mouse movement. If the movement is large, the
playback pitch increases and the audio material ‘passes by’ faster. If the movement is small or moves in
the opposite direction, the playback pitch decreases, and the audio is ‘passing by’
slower or is reversed.
You enable scrubbing with the "0" on the numeric keypad or with the Scrub mouse mode. .
Furthermore you can scrub with the transport control
.
You can set the scrubbing type in the playback parameters dialog
(Keyboard short: p)

the VIP Mouse Mode to scrub mode and moving the mouse you can perform scrubbing. MAGIX music

starts playback at a very low speed, the mouse position relative to the start play cursor controls the
speed.
Jogging:
The distance between the play cursor and the mouse sets the playback speed.
Absolute:
The position of the mouse in the window sets the playback speed - at the left border playback speed is
200% backward, at the right border speed is 200 % forward, in the middle of the window the speed is
0.
Two Speed:
You can define a user speed, this will be used for scrubbing with the scrub buttons in the transport
control.
A Tip About Scrubbing!
Scrubbing can be used to perform detailed work on audio sections in your material. Using the Relative
scrubbing mode may be the ticket to a more useful application of the scrubbing feature. Since the
Relative mode allows the audio playback to slow down, the closer the Real Time Position Line gets to
the mouse pointer position, you may be able to find sections in your audio material that represent a
crucial cut or event.
