3. Safety instructions Improper use of the scanner and accessories puts you and others at risk of danger and may damage or destroy the scanner, so please read and observe strictly the following safety instructions, hazard warnings and general warnings. Purpose of use The Film Scanner is intended for use in dry, enclosed spaces only. It is designed for personal use and is not suitable for commercial applications.
Do not wrap anything around the Film Scanner and do not place it on top of clothing or textiles. This can potentially cause a build-up of heat within the unit, causing the housing to deform, and there is a risk of fire. Injuries and material damage Place the Film Scanner on stable, robust surfaces only. Otherwise the scanner may fall down or fall over, becoming damaged and causing injury. To avoid overheating, ensure adequate ventilation and do not cover up the Film Scanner.
4. Overview of device Copy button Power LED USB cable Cleaning brush Media bay Negative holder Slide feeder Note: • This Film Scanner supports only Windows XP SP2 and above, Vista, Windows 7 and USB 2.0. • In the interests of getting clear images at all times, it is advisable to clean the glass surface of the scanner’s media bay often using the cleaning brush (included) or a clean, dry cotton bud free of alcohol.
5. Inserting negatives Open the negative holder at the position marked “Open” and place the holder, opened, in front of you as shown below. Then place the negatives the usual way up (neither turned nor upside down) into the recesses provided in the holder for this purpose. Use the numbering on every negative strip as a guide. 1. Open negative film holder 2. Place film in negative film holder 3. Close negative film holder Close the negative holder and press down on the edges until they click into place.
6. Inserting slides The supplied Film magazine can be used for slides of a variety of thicknesses up to a maximum of 3.2 mm. Insert slides into the opening in the magazine as shown below. The magazine is then loaded into the scanner window-first.
Note: • If the slide feeder is inserted into the scanner from the wrong side you will damage the scanner’s protective flaps! Such damage cannot be repaired under warranty! Slides placed in the bay are pushed into the scanner one by one using the lever located on the side of the slide feeder. To do this, first push the lever away from the scanner all the way until it stops. Then move the lever carefully back towards the scanner.
7. Removing dust from scanner optics Open the Image Scan Tool program just as if you were going to scan in an image (see page 14). Do not insert either the slide feeder or the negative holder into the scanner. You will now see in the Image Scan Tool preview window where any dust has gathered. Switch, within the program, between the “Slide” and “Negative” settings to detect further dirt or dust. You can now remove the dust using the cleaning brush.
8. Installing the software The program Image Scan Tool must be installed before using the Film Scanner. Place the installation CD in your CD/DVD drive, and the installation CD menu will appear automatically. When the start-up screen appears, select “Installation” to install the software. You will then be given general instructions for installing the software under Windows XP, Vista and 7 (varies slightly from system to system).
1. First, choose the language in which the program should be installed, then click “Next”. 2. The installation procedure is then prepared. 3. Click “Next” to continue installation.
4. Click “Install” to install the program. 5. The installation procedure is then carried out. 6. To complete the installation, click “Finish”, then remove the installation CD from your drive and re-boot the computer.
9. Connecting the Film Scanner to your computer Plug the scanner’s connector cable into one of your computer’s USB ports. The power LED on the scanner will then light up in red. The transparency scanner will only work on a USB port that supports USB 2.0. On desktop computers, such connection ports are usually located on the rear side. In the case of laptops and notebooks, you may have to try out various USB ports to find a suitable one.
10. Using the Film Scanner On your system’s desktop, double-click the Image Scan Tool icon to open the software. This opens the directly the preview window which handles the scanning-in process.
Now place slides or negatives into the Film Scanner using the appropriate original image holder. The image is then displayed in the preview window („Live View“) showing how it will look when scanned in. Note: • Inserting the slide feeder or negative holder into the scanner from the wrong side will damage the scanner’s protective flaps! Such damage cannot be repaired under warranty! See Section 5 on page 6 (Inserting Negatives) and Section 6 on page 7 (Inserting Slides).
Scan Quality 1) Standard: This corresponds to the physical resolution of the scanner (1800 dpi). Images are captured with 2.520 x 1.680 pixels. 2) Interpolated: The scanned image is interpolated to produce a higher resolution (3600 dpi). Images are captured with 5.040 x 3.360 pixels. Note: • Images captured with 3600 dpi have a higher resolution, but interpolation does impair quality to an extent.
Image scan As soon as you have made all settings, the image can be scanned in. Images digitalised using the scanner are saved in JPEG format and can be processed afterwards using any digital image processing software. Note: • If the image preview shows any patches or defects on the image to be scanned: Remove any dust from the slide or negative and from the scanner lens (see page 9). • To achieve the best image quality, wait approx. 5 seconds between placing thenext picture and taking a snapshot.
To scan an image, click on “Snapshot“ or the “Copy“ button on the Film Scanner. If you wish to delete an image prior to the transfer, click on the “Delete“ symbol on the screen to delete the preselected image. Click on „Mirror“ to get an horizontally flipped image. Rotate the snapshot image clockwise by 90 degrees to the right. Before saving the images on your computer, select the location where the image will be stored. Click on “Save“ to transfer the images shown on the film strip to your computer.
