Virtual host settings

Setting up your server with virtual hosts allows you to maintain distinct separation between
hostingaccountsontheserverforFlashMediaServer.Eachvirtualhostdirectoryontheserver
contains its own Vhost.xml le. e Vhost.x ml conguration le denes settings for an
individual virtual host. ese settings include aliases for the virtual host, the location of the
virtual host’s application directory, limits on the resources the virtual host can use, and other
parameters.
Eachvirtualhostmusthaveitsowndirectoryinsidetheadaptordirectory.enameofthe
directory must be the actual name of the virtual host, such as streaming.adobe.com.Each
denedvirtualhostmustbemappedtoaDomainNameServer(DNS)entryoranothername
resolutionsuchasaWindowsInternetNameService(WINS)addressorahostsle,that
speciesanIPaddressontheservercomputer.
Eachadaptormustcontaina_defaultVHost_ directory in addition to the custom virtual
hoststhatyoudene.Ifaclientapplicationtriestoconnecttoavirtualhostthatdoesnotexist,
the server attempts to connect it to _defaultVHost_.(Ifyouareusingasecureportforthe
adaptor that contains the virtual host, you can only dene one virtual host for the adaptor, in
addition to_defaultVHost_.)
Application settings

e Application.x mllecontainsthesettingsforFlashMediaInteractiveServerapplica-
tions. ese include settings such as: the size of the Server-Side Media ActionScript runtime
engine, the location at which streams and shared objects are stored, default AMF encoding, and
bandwidth limitations.
e Application.xml le in the virtual host directory congures the default settings for all
applicationswithinthatvirtualhost.Ifyouwanttohavedierentsettingsforaparticular
application, you can copy an Application.xml le to the application’s registered application
directory(/ap plications/ap p _ na m e)andeditittoincludeyourcustomsettings.
Inmostcases,thesettingsinApplication.xml le in the specic application directory
override settings in the Application.x ml le in the virtual host directory, but not always.

With Flash Media Server 3, you have powerful logging capabilities, which can be highly custom-
ized for your specic application.
