7.8.8 Sickle Hold-Downs
Check daily that sickle hold-downs are set to
prevent sickle sections from lifting off guards,
but still permit sickle to slide without binding.
NOTE
Guards should be aligned prior to
adjusting hold-downs.
CAUTION
Stop engine, and remove key from ignition
before leaving Operator's seat for any
reason. A child or even a pet could engage
an idling machine.
7.8.8.1 Sickle Hold-Down Adjustment: Pointed
Guards
Single Knife
a. Turn adjuster bolt (A). Using a feeler gauge,
clearance from hold-down to sickle section
should be 0.004–0.024 in. (0.1–0.6 mm).
NOTE
For larger adjustments, it may be
necessary to loosen bolts (B), turn
adjuster bolt (A), and then re-tighten
nuts (B).
Double Knife
a. Torque nuts (C) to 35 ft·lbf (46 N·m).
b. Turn adjuster bolts (D). Using feeler gauge,
clearance from hold-down to sickle section
should be 0.004–0.016 in. (0.1–0.4 mm) at the
guide tip, and 0.004–0.040 in. (0.1–1.0 mm) at
rear of guide.
c. Torque nuts (C) to 53 ft·lbf (72 N·m).
d. After adjusting all hold-downs, run header at a
low engine speed, and listen for noise due to
insufficient clearance. Insufficient clearance will
also result in overheating of the sickle and
guards.
