INFO 3 W H Y L U X E O N • What is Luxeon? I N F O R M A T I O N • Lasts longer than any other light source — more than 10 years L U X E O N Luxeon emitters are the highest flux LEDs in the world, delivering the brightest solid state lighting solutions available. Luxeon white produces more than 20 lumens per watt, and Luxeon emitters are 10 to 20 times brighter than standard LEDs, enabling luminous densities 5 to 20 times higher. Luxeon is an optimum light source.
INFO L U X E O N F E A T U R E S Luxeon power light sources contain no epoxy. Epoxy is prone to optical decay over time, resulting in poor lumen maintenance. Luxeon technology delivers superior lumen maintenance compared to other solid state sources and conventional lighting.
INFO U N D E R S T A N D I N G C O L O R L U X E O N I N F O R M A T I O N 5 CIE Chromaticity Diagram In 1931, "Human observer" experiments were conducted to compare colors, brightness levels and contrast ratios. These experiments are the basis for models used in the science of color today. The CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage, or International Commission on Illumination) has standardized these models and they are being used in various color spaces.

These solutions are ideal for portable applications such as flashlights, headlamps and bicycle lights. There are two types of low voltages ICs. First, the Boost Regulator ICs are used when the input voltage is lower than the forward voltage of the Luxeon LED.

C O L L I M A T O R S 27 A N D S I N G L E R E F L E C T O R S L E D Optics – Single Luxeon Optical solutions will determine the number or types of Luxeon needed to meet lighting specifications. As a result, an optimal optical design will reduce the number of LEDs, which will decrease the cost and complexity of the application. Whenever possible, it is advantageous to use standard solutions, because the cost of developing custom optical solutions can range in the tens of thousands of dollars.
C O L L I M A T O R S M U L T I P L E 28 L E D S Optics – Multiple Luxeon Customer applications frequently require the use of multiple Luxeon. H E A T 29 S I N K S THERMAL T H E R M A L M A N A G E M E N T Heat Sinks Assuming the Luxeon products are being driven at nominal current levels, thermal management is the most important design consideration. The short-term consequences of heat on the Luxeon include: reduction of luminous flux (light output); increase of wavelength (color shifts more towards red); reduction of forward voltage (voltage drop across the LED). The principal long-term effect of heat on the Luxeon is shortened life.
