INTRODUCTION The X-70A is a highquality, wide screen sonarwith performance that is secondtonone in itsclass.Using menu features and"soft-key'operation, theX-70Aisalsoone ofthe easiest-to-use sonars that Lowrance hasever built.Thewide "ClearVision" screen shows the underwaterworld with high resolution and detail. The display and keyboard are also lightedfornight operation.
INDASH MOUNTING The X-70A can be installed in the dashwith thesuppliedhardware ifthe dashis 1/2' thick or less. Determining the dash thicknesscan be difficult, however, if you remove a gaugefrom the dash, youcan easilly measure the thickness. Trythis in an areathat'sclose to the location that you wish to installthe unit, since the thickness canvarysignificantlyin someboats. Make certain there is clearance behind the dashforthe unit and there is enough roomto tighten the boltson both sides of the unit.
POWERCONNECTIONS The X-70Aworksfrom a twelve-volt battery system. For the best results, attach the power cable directly to the battery. You can attach thepower cable to an accessoryor power buss, however you may haveproblems with electrical interference. Therefore, it's safertogo aheadand attach the power cabledirectlyto the battery. If the cable is not long enough, splice #18 gaugewireonto it. Thepowercable hastwowires, red and black. Red isthepositive lead, blackis negativeorground.
TRANSDUCER Some X-70A's are sold with a HS-WS transommounttransducer. It can be installed on any outboard or stern-drive (inboard\outboard) powered boat. It can also be permanently installed inside the boat to "shootthrough"the hull on some fiberglass boats. 0 Shoot-thru-hullv.5. Transom Mounting Typically1 shoot-thru-hull installations give excellent high speed operation and good to excellent depth capability. There is no possibility of damagefrom floating objects. It can't be knockedoff when docking or loading on thetrailer. However,theshoot-thru-hull installation does haveits drawbacks. One, some loss of sensitivitydoes occur, even on the best hulls. This varies from hull to hull, even from different installations on the same hull.
display, the problem couldbeoneofthreethings; sparkplugs, alternator, ortachometerwiring. Try using resistor sparkplugs, alternatorfilters,or routing the sonar unit's power cable away from engine wiring. Again, routing the power cable directlyto the battery helps eliminate noise problems. Make certain to use the in-line fusesupplied with the unitwhen wiringthepowercableto the battery. When no noise appears onthe sonar unitafterall of the above tests, then the noise source is probably cavitation.

Oil,dirt, and fuelcancause afilmtoformon thetransducer, reducingits effectiveness. If thetransducer is mounted inside the hull, be sure it is shooting through only one layerof fiberglass and that it is securelybonded to the hull. Do NOTuse IRTV siliconerubber adhesive or MarinetexlM. 2. Electrical noise fromthe boat's motorcan interferewith thesonar.
SHOOT-THRU-HULL INSTALLATION The transducerinstallation inside a fiberglass hull must be in an area that does not have air bubbles in the resin or separated fiberglass layers. The sonar signal must passthrough solid fiberglass. A successful transducerinstallation can be made on hulls with flotation materials (such as plywood, balsa wood, or foam) between layers of fiberglass if the material is removed from the chosen area.
