General Installation Notes:
Please read these instructions completely before beginning the installation. If
you have any questions please call.
Before beginning the installation, disconnect the negative battery cable and use
wheel chocks to block the vehicle's wheels.
Make sure the engine, transmission, body and frame are properly grounded.
Refer to Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 for the component names.
The Lokar Floor Mount Emergency Hand Brake is designed for use
with Lokar Emergency Brake Cables.
The Lokar Hand Brake was assembled using thread locking
compound. DO NOT attempt to remove the release button or
disassemble the Hand Brake!
Step 1: Remove any existing or original parking brake mechanism.
Step 2: Determine where the new Hand Brake will be mounted. It can
be installed at the top of the transmission tunnel, on the side of
the transmission tunnel, or even sideways on the floor in front
of the seat. It can be installed with the "L" mounting brackets on
top of or underneath the transmission tunnel or floor. For these
instructions we will assume the Hand Brake is being installed on
the transmission tunnel, with the "L" mounting brackets attached to
the underside of the tunnel.
You will need to make sure that the Emergency Brake Cables have
a clear path to the Hand Brake without making any excessively
sharp turns. The Emergency Brake Cables will also need to be kept
clear of exhaust, suspension, or driveline components.
Step 3: Once you have determined the best location and made sure that
there won’t be any interference with the Emergency Brake Cables,
mark and cut a rectangular slot in the tunnel where you want the
Hand Brake to be installed, approximately 1/2" wide and 3-1/2" long.
The easiest way to do this is to drill two 1/2" diameter holes that are 3"
apart center to center, and cut out the area between them. Depending
on the shape of your tunnel, additional trimming may be required.
Step 4: Remove the cotter pin and flat washer from the clevis pin and
remove the clevis from the Hand Brake. Fig. 2 Insert the Hand
Brake into the slot you just cut.
Step 5: The "L" mounting brackets have a 5/16" hole in one leg and a 3/8"
hole in the other. You will use the 5/16" holes to attach the "L"
mounting brackets to the Hand Brake underneath the tunnel, and the
3/8” holes to attach the "L" mounting brackets to the vehicle tunnel.
Step 6: From underneath the vehicle, assemble the "L" mounting brackets
onto the Hand Brake as shown in Fig. 3. Tighten the bolts enough
so that the "L" mounting brackets will stay in place, but loose
enough so that they can be adjusted as needed.
Step 7: Adjust the angle of the "L" mounting brackets as needed to get
them to fit against the underside of the tunnel.
Step 8: Once the "L" mounting brackets are positioned the way you want
them, mark the tunnel in the center of the holes in the "L" mounting
brackets. Drill the holes in the tunnel with a 3/8" drill bit.
Step 9: Install 3/8" diameter bolts (not supplied) of a suitable length from
inside the vehicle, and through the "L" mounting bracket holes.
Secure with either locknuts or regular nuts with lock washers (not
supplied).
Step 10: From underneath the vehicle, tighten the bolts that attach the "L"
mounting brackets to the Hand Brake.
Step 11: Install the clevis you will be using to connect to the Emergency
Brake Cables. If you are using the recommended Lokar
Emergency Brake Cables, they come with the correct clevis. If you
are using non-Lokar emergency brake cables, you can modify the
supplied clevis that you removed earlier as required in order to
connect to your emergency brake cables. Fig. 4
Step 12: Adjust the Emergency Brake Cables so that there is no slack, but
make sure that the brakes are not applied when the Hand Brake
is released. Generally, the cables should be adjusted so that three
clicks of the Hand Brake will prevent the vehicle from rolling (your
braking system may have a different requirement, however).
