Step 17: Fortheneutralsafetyswitchtofunctionproperly,theshifterlinkage
mustbeadjustedcorrectly.Donotattempttoadjusttheneutral
safetyswitchunlessyouhavecompletedStep 15.
The Lokar neutral safety switch is a simple on/off, non-directional
switch. The switch passes current (turns on) when the ball is pushed
in. It does not pass current (turns off) when the ball is out at its
at-rest position.
Loosen,butdonotremove,thetwo5/16"-24x3/8”buttonhead
boltsthatattachtherightsidebananabrackettotheswitchplate
(theboltsareincurved,slottedholes).Fig. 11
WARNING: Before taking the shifter out of Park, be sure that the
vehicle’s tires are scotched and the parking brake is set to avoid
movement of the vehicle.
Step 18: Put the shifter into the Reverse position.
Step 19:Repositiontheswitchplatesothattheholeintheswitchplate
linesupwiththecentergrooveintheshifterbody.Fig. 12Screw
theprovidedaluminumadjusterplugintotheneutralsafetyswitch
opening.Wigglingtheshifterleverslightlywhileyouarescrewing
theadjusterpluginwillhelpgettheshifterbodycenteredonthe

Step 20:Retightenthetwo5/16"-24x3/8”buttonheadboltsthatattach
therightsidebananabrackettotheswitchplate.
Step 21:Removethealuminumadjusterplug,andreinstalltheneutral
safetyswitchandwasherontotheshifter.Testforcontinuityby
connecting an ohmmeter lead to each stud on the neutral safety
switch.Whenadjustedcorrectly,youwillonlyhavecontinuity
betweenthetwoswitchstudswhentheshifterisinParkorNeutral.
Continuityinanyothergearrequiresreadjustmentoftheneutral
safetyswitch.
Step 22:Connecttheneutralsafetyswitchbetweenyourignitionswitchand
startercircuits.Checkthewiringofyourfusepanel:
• If there are (2) connections for a neutral safety switch,runa#12(or
heavier)strandedwirefromtheseterminalsinyourfusepanelto
the(2)terminalsontheneutralsafetyswitch.Thatcompletesthe
NeutralSafetySwitchwiring.
• If your fuse panel does not have neutral safety switch connections,
locatethewiregoingfromtheignitionswitchtothestarter.IfGM
colorcodesareused,thiswirewillusuallybepurple.Afterlocat-
ingthewire,disconnectitfromthestarter.Itmustbecutand
routedfromtheignitionswitchtooneoftheneutralsafetyswitch
terminals,andfromtheotherneutralsafetyswitchterminaltothe
samestudonthestarterwheretheoriginalwirewasremoved.If
thewiremustbelengthened,besuretousewirethatisatleast
thesamesizeorlargerthantheoriginal.
Step 23: Reconnect the negative battery cable and check operation. Make
surethattheenginewillnotstartinreverseoradrivegear.Ifit
does,followtheneutralsafetyswitchadjustmentprocedureagain.
If your car should ever start in any gear other than Park or Neutral,
pleasereadjusttheneutralsafetyswitchaccordingly.Tightenall
brackets and bolts correctly and securely and there should be no
movementormaladjustment.Ifyouhaveanyquestionsafterfollow-
ingthisprocedure,pleasecallLokarTechnicalSupport.
Step 24:Oncetheinstallationiscompletelyfinishedandtheneutralsafety
switchisadjusted,removeeachofthe5/16"-24x3/8"buttonhead
bolts from the banana brackets one at a time, apply blue thread
locking compound to the threads, and reinstall.

To Remove Shifter Knob:
Step 1: MakesuretheshifterisallthewayforwardintheParkposition.
Step 2: Loosenthejamnutbelowtheshifterknob.DO NOT loosen or remove the
setscrewthatisintheknob. Fig. 14
Step 3: Turntheshifterknobcounter-clockwisetoremove.

To Install Shifter Knob:
Step 1: Makesurethejamnutisstillinplaceontheshifterlever.
Step 2: Screwtheshifterknobontotheshifterleveruntilthereleasebutton
comesupflushwiththetopoftheshifterknob.
Step 3: Tightenthejamnutupagainstthebottomoftheshifterknob.
Step 4:Checktomakesurethatdepressingthereleasebuttonallowstheshifter
lever to be moved, and that the shifter lever still locks in Park and
Neutral.Iftheshifterwillnotcomeoutof“PARK”withthereleasebutton
fully depressed, tighten the knob one turn and check it again. If the shift-
er does not lock in “PARK”, loosen the knob one turn and check it again.
