MUMIMO SPOTLIGHT
MU-MIMO Spotlight
MU-MIMO enables an access point (AP) to create groups of clients (up to four clients per
group in the case of the LAPAC2600), and split the spatial streams among clients within the
group. For example, if a 4x4 MU-MIMO AP is communicating with two 2x2 MU-MIMO clients,
it can dedicate two spatial streams to each of the clients, allowing them to communicate
simultaneously. Using another example, if there is one 2x2 client and two 1x1 clients, the AP
can dedicate two streams to the 2x2 client and one stream to each of the two 1x1 clients,
enabling all three clients to communicate on dedicated streams. The LAPAC2600 currently
allows up to three clients to communicate simultaneously within a group.
In theory, there is no limit to the number of groups an AP can create. So if an AP has forty 1x1
MU-MIMO clients, it could create up to ten groups of four clients each. While the groups still
have to take turns, up to three of the clients within each group can communicate at the same
time. In practice, the number of groups and the number of clients per group depend on the types
of clients, the noise level, physical layout of the room, and other factors, but the potential in
improved overall bandwidth is substantial.

* Throughput figures are illustrative. 802.11ac 1733 Mbps (for 5 GHz) is up to 5.8x faster physical data rate when compared to 802.11n 300
Mbps (for 2.4 GHz) Wi-Fi access points. Actual performance can vary, including lower wireless network capacity, data throughput rate, range,
and coverage. Performance depends on many factors, conditions, and variables, including distance from the access point, volume of network
traffic, building materials and construction, operating system used, mix of wireless products used, interference, and other adverse conditions.
