Why is clearancing needed?__________________________________________
To obtain the larger displacement of the 383, 403, 427 and any other large displace-
ment conguration, a crankshaft with a 4.00 inch stroke is used. Since this stroke is greater
than the stock crankshafts stroke, it is necessary to move items such as the windage tray out
so that no interference occurs between the windage tray and the connecting rod bolts. The
block itself also needs to be clearanced but if you have purchased a short block or complete
engine from LPE, this work has already been performed.
By moving the windage tray away from the connecting rod bolts (downward) the oil
pump pick up is moved closer to the bottom of the oil pan and will need to be adjusted to
ensure the pump will not starve the engine.
