Situation
Marín is located in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.
Thanks to its location in the Bay of Pontevedra, the Spanish port
is naturally sheltered by the Isle of Ons which provides excellent
conditions for port operations. In combination with its proximity to
the main entry routes for international shipping lines into central
Europe, Marín has evolved into an important hub in Spain.
Task
In recent years, Marín’s throughput of cereals and other bulk
products from vessels up to Panamax size has continuously incre-
ased. As a result, the concession-holder for stevedore operations
Galigrain S.A. was facing bottlenecks and required extra crane
capacity for faster unloading.
Solution
In 2011, Galigrain S. A. has received their first Liebherr mobile
harbour crane, type LHM 550. As extra performance was required,
Galigrain decided to equip the new crane with the Pactronic
®
hybrid power booster. Moreover, Liebherr engineers carried out a
detailed analysis in order to identify necessary adjustments of the
port infrastructure to keep pace with the additional crane capacity.
Performance
Fitted with Pactronic
®
, the LHM 550 achieves handling rates of up
to 1.800 tonnes per hour. Thanks to this new investment, Galigrain
has significantly speeded up unloading and thereby increased its
attractiveness for shipping lines. Another important advantage of
the LHM is its versatility as the machine is also used for general
cargo operation providing a maximum lifting capacity of 144
tonnes.
