GENERAL INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
Location Selection
Selecting the Best Location
DANGER
•Toavoidthepossibilityoffire,donotinstalltheunitinanareawherecombustiblegasmaygenerate,flow,stagnate,orleak.
•Donotinstalltheunitinalocationwhereacidicsolutionandspray(sulfur)areoftenusedasitcancausebodilyinjuryordeath.
•Donotusetheunitinenvironmentswhereoil,steam,orsulfuricgasarepresentasitcancausebodilyinjuryordeath.
Install a fence to prevent vermin from crawling into the unit or unauthorized individuals from accessing it.
Select a location for installing the outdoor unit that will meet the following conditions:
•Wheretheunitwillnotbesubjectedtodirectthermalradiationfromotherheatsources.
•Whereoperatingsoundfromtheunitwillnotdisturbinhabitantsofsurroundingbuildings.
•Wheretheunitwillnotbeexposedtodirect,strongwinds.
•Wherethereisenoughstrengthtobeartheweightoftheunit.
•Includespacefordrainagetoensurecondensateflowsproperlyoutoftheunitwhenitisinheatingmode.
•Includeenoughspaceforairflowandforserviceaccess.
Toensuretheoutdoorunitoperatesproperly,certainmeasuresarerequiredinlocationswherethereisapossibilityofheavysnowfallorseverewind-
chillorcold:
1.Prepareforseverewinterwindchillsandheavysnowfall,eveninareasofthecountrywheretheseareunusualphenomena.
2.Position the outdoor unit so thatits airflowfans arenot buriedby direct, heavy snowfall. If snow piles up andblocks theairflow,the
systemmaymalfunction.
3.Removeanysnowthathasaccumulated3-15/16inchesormoreonthetopoftheoutdoorunit.
4.Placetheoutdoorunitonaraisedplatformatleast19-11/16incheshigherthantheaverageannualsnowfallforthearea.Inenvironments
wherethereisapossibilityofheavysnow,theframeheightmustbemorethantwo(2)timestheamountofaverageannualsnowfall,and
shouldnotexceedthewidthoftheoutdoorunit.Iftheframewidthiswiderthantheoutdoorunit,snowmayaccumulate.
5.Installasnowprotectionhood.
6.Topreventsnowandheavyrainfromenteringtheoutdoorunit,installthesuctionanddischargeductsfacingawayfromdirectwinds.
7.Additionally,thefollowingconditionsshouldbetakenintoconsiderationwhentheunitoperatesindefrostmode:
•Iftheoutdoorunitisinstalledinahighlyhumidenvironment(nearanocean,lake,etc.),ensurethatthesiteiswell-ventilatedandhasalotof
naturallight.(Example:Installonarooftop.)
•Sidewalksorparkinglotsneartheoutdoorunitmayaccumulatemoistureafterunitoperatesindefrostmodethatcanturntoice.
Ambient Air Conditions
•Avoidexposingtheoutdoorunittosteam,combustiblegases,orothercorrosiveelements.
•Avoidexposingtheunittodischargefromboilerstacks,chimneys,steamreliefports,otherairconditioningunits,kitchenvents,plumbing
vents,orsubstancesthatmaydegradeperformanceorcausedamagetotheunit.
•Wheninstallingmultipleoutdoorunits,avoidplacingtheunitswheredischargeofoneoutdoorunitwillblowintotheinletsideofanadjacentunit.
Avoidexposingtheunittosourcesofextremetemperatureorgasestopreventseriousbodilyinjury.
Theindoorunitmaytakelongertoprovideheat,orheatingperformancewillbereducedinwinteriftheunitisinstalled:
1.Inanarrow,shadylocation.
2.Nearalocationthathasalotofgroundmoisture.
3.Inahighlyhumidenvironment.
4.Inanareainwhichcondensatedoesnotdrainproperly.
