Ethernetproblems
•Problem:Yourcomputercannotconnecttothenetwork.
Solution:Ensurethat:
–Thecableisinstalledproperly.
ThenetworkcablemustbesecurelyconnectedbothtotheEthernetconnectorofyourcomputerand
totheRJ45connectorofthehub.Themaximumallowabledistancefromthecomputertohubis
100meters.Ifthecableisconnectedandthedistanceiswithinacceptablelimitsbuttheproblem
persists,tryadifferentcable.
–Youareusingthecorrectdevicedriver.
1.ClickStart➙ControlPanel➙HardwareandSound➙DeviceManager.
Ifyouarepromptedforanadministratorpasswordorconrmation,typethepasswordorprovide
conrmation.
2.IftheexclamationmarkisdisplayednexttotheadapternameunderNetworkadapters,youmight
notbeusingthecorrectdriverorthedrivermighthavebeendisabled.Toupdatethedriver,
right-clickthehighlightedadapter.
3.ClickUpdateDriverSoftware,andthenfollowtheinstructionsonthescreen.
–Theswitchportandtheadapterhavethesameduplexsetting.
Ifyouconguredtheadapterforfullduplex,ensurethattheswitchportisalsoconguredforfull
duplex.Settingthewrongduplexmodecandegradeperformance,causedataloss,orresultinlost
connections.
–Youhaveinstalledallnetworkingsoftwarethatisnecessaryforyournetworkenvironment.
CheckwithyourLANadministratorforthenecessarynetworkingsoftware.
•Problem:Theadapterstopsworkingfornoapparentreason.
Solution:Thenetworkdriverlesmaybecorruptormissing.Updatethedriverbyreferringtothe
“Solution”descriptionfortheproceduretoensurethatthecorrectdevicedriverisinstalledinthe
precedingproblem.
•Problem:IfyourcomputerisaGigabitEthernetmodelandyouusetheaspeedof1000Mbps,the
connectionfailsorerrorsoccur.
Solution:
–UseCategory5wiringandensurethatthenetworkcableissecurelyconnected.
–Connecttoa1000BASE-Thub/switch(not1000BASE-X).
•Problem:YourcomputerisaFastEthernetmodelandyouusethespeedof100Mbps,butthe
connectionfailsorerrorsoccur.
Solution:
–UseCategory5wiringandensurethatthenetworkcableissecurelyconnected.
–Connecttoa100BASE-TXhub/switch(not100BASE-T4).
•Problem:TheWakeonLANfeatureisnotworking.
Solution:
–EnsurethatWakeonLANisenabledinThinkPadSetup.
–Ifitis,checkwithyourLANadministratorforthenecessarysettings.
•Problem:Yourcomputercannotconnecttothenetworkat1000Mbps.Instead,itconnectsat100Mbps.
