thatyoucanperform,troubleshootingprocedures,andexplanationsoferrormessagesanderrorcodes.

Thedocumentationthatcomeswithyouroperatingsystemandsoftwarealsocontainstroubleshooting

information.

Checkoutprocedure

Thecheckoutprocedureisthesequenceoftasksthatyoushouldfollowtodiagnoseaproblemintheserver.

Aboutthecheckoutprocedure

Beforeyouperformthecheckoutprocedurefordiagnosinghardwareproblems,reviewthefollowing

information:

•Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginsonpage“ImportantSafetyInformation”onpage1

•Thediagnosticprogramsprovidetheprimarymethodsoftestingthemajorcomponentsoftheserver,

suchasthesystemboard,Ethernetcontroller,keyboard,mouse(pointingdevice),serialports,and

harddiskdrives.Youcanalsousethemtotestsomeexternaldevices.Ifyouarenotsurewhethera

problemiscausedbythehardwareorbythesoftware,youcanusethediagnosticprogramstoconrm

thatthehardwareisworkingcorrectly.

•Whenyourunthediagnosticprograms,asingleproblemmightcausemorethanoneerrormessage.

Whenthishappens,correctthecauseofthersterrormessage.Theothererrormessagesusuallywillnot

occurthenexttimeyourunthediagnosticprograms.

Ifmultipleerrorcodesorsystem-boardLEDsindicateamicroprocessorerror,theerrormightbein

themicroprocessororinthemicroprocessorsocket.See“Microprocessorproblems”onpage54

for

informationaboutdiagnosingmicroprocessorproblems.

•Beforeyourunthediagnosticprograms,youmustdeterminewhetherthefailingserverispartofashared

harddiskdrivecluster(twoormoreserverssharingexternalstoragedevices).Ifitispartofacluster,you

canrunalldiagnosticprogramsexcepttheonesthattestthestorageunit(thatis,aharddiskdriveinthe

storageunit)orthestorageadapterthatisattachedtothestorageunit.Thefailingservermightbepartof

aclusterifanyofthefollowingconditionsistrue:

–Youhaveidentiedthefailingserveraspartofacluster(twoormoreserverssharingexternalstorage

devices).

–Oneormoreexternalstorageunitsareattachedtothefailingserverandatleastoneoftheattached

storageunitsisalsoattachedtoanotherserverorunidentiabledevice.

–Oneormoreserversarelocatednearthefailingserver.

Important:Iftheserverispartofasharedharddiskdrivecluster,runonetestatatime.Donotrun

anysuiteoftests,suchas“quick”or“normal”tests,becausethismightenabletheharddiskdrive

diagnostictests.
