Rebuildingaphysicaldrive
ThistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtorebuildaphysicaldriveusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDConguration
Utilityprogramwhenaphysicaldriveinanarrayfails.
WhenadriveinaRAIDdrivegroupfails,youcanrebuildthedrivebyrecreatingthedatathatwasstoredon
thedrivebeforeitfails.Ifthedriveisnotoperational,itmustbereplacedandthedataonthefailingdrive
mustberebuiltonanewdrivetorestorethesystemtofaulttolerance.Ifhot-sparedrivesareavailable,the
failingdrivemightberebuiltautomaticallywithoutanyuserintervention.
TheRAIDcontrollerrecreatesthedatausingthedatastoredonotherdrivesinthedrivegroup.Rebuilding
canbedoneonlyindrivegroupswithdataredundancy,suchasRAID1,5,and10drivegroups.Fora

GuideonthedocumentationDVDthatcomeswithyourserver.
TorebuildaphysicaldriveusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogramwhenaphysical
driveinanarrayfails,dothefollowing:
1.StarttheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogram.See“StartingtheLSISoftwareRAID
CongurationUtilityprogram”onpage74.
2.Onthemaininterfaceoftheprogram,selectRebuildandfollowtheinstructionsonthescreen.
Note:Runningaconsistencycheckimmediatelyaftertherebuildcompletestoensuredataintegrityforthe
virtualdrives.See“Runningaconsistencycheck”onpage78.
Therebuildrateisthepercentageofthecomputingcyclesdedicatedtorebuildingfailingdrives.Arebuild
rateof100percentmeansthatthesystemgivesprioritytorebuildingthefailingdrives.Therebuildratecan
beconguredbetween0percentand100percent.At0percent,therebuildisdoneonlyifthesystemisnot
doinganythingelse.At100percent,therebuildhasahigherprioritythananyothersystemactivity.

Runningaconsistencycheck
ThistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtorunaconsistencycheckforvirtualdrivesusingtheLSISoftware
RAIDCongurationUtilityprogram.
AconsistencycheckisanoperationthatveriesthatallstripesonavirtualdrivewitharedundantRAID
levelareconsistent.Theconsistencycheckoperationveriescorrectnessofthedataonvirtualdrivesthat
useRAID1,5,and10(RAID0doesnotprovidedataredundancy).Forexample,inasystemwithparity,
checkingconsistencymeanscomputingthedataononedriveandcomparingtheresultstothecontentsof
theparitydrive.
Youshouldrunaconsistencycheckonfault-tolerantvirtualdrivesperiodically.Itisrecommendedthatyou
runaconsistencycheckatleastonceamonth.Youmustrunaconsistencycheckifyoususpectthatthe
