Note:ThissectionappliesonlytocomputermodelsthathaveanoperatingsystempreinstalledfromLenovo.
Anoperatingsystempasswordisverysimilartoapower-onpasswordanddeniesaccesstothecomputerby
anunauthorizeduserwhenthepasswordisactivated.Thecomputerisunusableuntilthecorrectpassword
isenteredandrecognizedbythecomputer.
VitalProductData
EachcomputerhasauniqueVitalProductData(VPD)codestoredinthenonvolatilememoryonthesystem
board.Afteryoureplacethesystemboard,theVPDmustbeupdated.ToupdatetheVPD,see“Updating
(ashing)BIOSfromadisc”onpage560.
SecureManagedClient
TheSecureManagedClient(SMC)isastorage-based,desktopcomputingsolutionthathelpsbusinesses
reduceITcostsandimprovesecuritybyturningoffharddiskdrivesandstoringalldatainanon-server
remotelocationwhileofferinguserstheexibilityandperformanceofatraditionaldesktopcomputer.For
computermodelsthatdonothaveaninternalharddiskdriveandapreinstalledoperatingsystem,but
usearemoteharddiskdriveaccessedthroughtheSMC-StorageArray,contactthenetworkorstorage
administrator.

AnincorrectlevelofBIOScancausefalseerrorsandunnecessaryFRUreplacement.Usethefollowing
informationtodeterminethecurrentlevelofBIOSinstalledinthecomputer,thelatestBIOSavailableforthe
