Updating(ashing)theBIOS
Thistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtoupdate(ash)theBIOS.
Notes:
•UpdatetheBIOSonyourserveronlyifthenewerBIOSversionspecicallysolvesaproblemyouhave.
WedonotrecommendBIOSupdatesforserversthatdonotneedthem.Youcanviewtheupdated
informationforthenewBIOSversionintheinstallationinstructionsfortheBIOSupdateutilityprogram.
•DowngradingtheBIOStoanearlierversionisnotrecommendedandmightnotbesupported.Anearlier
BIOSversionmightnotsupportthelatestsystemcongurations.
•IfthepowertoyourserverisinterruptedwhilethePOSTandBIOSarebeingupdated,yourservermight
notrestartcorrectly.EnsurethatyouperformtheBIOSupdateprocedureinanenvironmentwitha
steadypowersupply.Besides,ensurethatyourservercanrestartsuccessfullywithoutencountering
hardwareproblems.
•IfyouhaveupdatedtheBIOSrmware,alltheBIOSsettingsbecomethedefaultsettingsoftheupdated
BIOSversion.YouneedtocheckandreconguretheBIOSsettingsforyourspecicneeds.Youcan
recordyourspecicBIOSsettingsbeforeupdatingtheBIOSforaneasierrecongurationinthenew
BIOSversion.
Toupdate(ash)theBIOS,dothefollowing:
1.Gotohttp://www.lenovo.com/driversandfollowtheinstructionsontheWebpagetolocatetheBIOS
updatepackage.
2.DownloadtheBIOSupdatepackageandtheinstallationinstructionsinaTXTle.
3.PrinttheTXTlethatcontainstheinstallationinstructionsandfollowtheinstructionstoupdate(ash)
theBIOS.
4.CheckandreconguretheBIOSsettingsforyourspecicneedsbasedonyournoteorreferto“Using
theSetupUtilityprogram”onpage53aftertheBIOSupdateprocessiscompleted.
RecoveringfromaBIOSupdatefailure
IfthepowertoyourserverisinterruptedwhiletheBIOSisbeingupdated,yourservermightnotrestart
correctly.Ifthishappens,performthefollowingproceduretorecoverfromtheBIOSupdatefailure.
Note:IftheoperatingsystemofyourserverisinstalledunderEFImode,youneedtoreinstalltheoperating
systemafterrecoveringtheBIOS.
TorecoverfromaBIOSupdatefailure,dothefollowing:
1.Gotohttp://www.lenovo.com/driversandfollowtheinstructionsontheWebpagetodownloadaBIOS
updatepackage.Then,puttheamiboot.romlecontainedinthepackageintotherootdirectoryof
abootableUSBkey.
2.Removeallmediafromthedrivesandturnoffallattacheddevicesandtheserver.Then,disconnectall
powercordsfromelectricaloutletsanddisconnectallcablesthatareconnectedtotheserver.
3.Iftheserverisinstalledinarackcabinet,removetheserverfromtherackcabinetandplaceitonaat,
clean,andstatic-protectivesurface.SeetheRackInstallationInstructionsthatcomeswiththeserver.
4.Removetheservercover.See“Removingtheservercover”onpage71.
5.LocatetheBIOSrecoveryswitchonthesystemboard.See“Systemboardjumpersandswitches”on
page44
.Then,removeanypartsanddisconnectanycablesthatmightimpedeyouraccesstothe
switch.
6.MovetheBIOSrecoveryswitchfromthedefaultoffpositiontotheonposition.
