Scalability in the ASPEN Matrix
Each8x12mixerboardprovides8physicalinputs,12
physicaloutputsandaccesstotheaudioanddatafrom
the48nalmixesintheASPENbus.Fourvirtual inputs
areprovidedinanysystemcongurationtofeedsignals
fromabuilt-insignalgeneratorforsetup,diagnosticsand
sound masking.
Asmultipleunitsarestacked,thesizeofthematrix
growsaccordingly.Forexample,a16input2RUmixer
modelactuallyhas20inputswhenthevirtualinputsare
included.Thematrixthenconsistsof960fullyfunctional
crosspoints(20x48).Asmoreinputsareadded,thesize
ofthematrixcontinuestoincreasewithoutlimitation.
Evenwithhundredsofinputs,everyinputcanfeedany
oneorallofthe48outputs,withfullsignalprocessing
availableoneveryinputandoutput.

TheASPENbusprovidesa1Gbpsthroughputcarrying
audioanddatawithasingleCAT6connectionbetween
the units in a system.
Whenmultipleunitsare
stacked, Master and Slave
units are automatically de-
tected and configured for the
correctsignalow.
Audio and data signals
propagatethroughsubmixes.
The lowermost slave in the
system generates a sub-
mixofsignalsfromdevices
connectedtoitandpasses
thesubmixtothenextslave
above it.
Eachintermediateslaveunit
addstothesubmixfrom
theunitbelowit,updates
thesubmixandpassesit
on to the unit above it. The
processcontinuesthrough
all slave units in the system
with no limitation on the total
number of slave units that
can be used.
The Master unit gathers the
submixfromtheslavebelow
it,updatesitwithitsown
signals and generates the
nalmix.Thenalmixis
thenbackpropagatedtoall
slave units below it to enable
systemwideautomixingand
control.
Theaudiooutputofallunits
in the system is taken from
the48channelnalmix.
Thisuniquearchitectureallowsasinglecomputeror
network connection to the Master to have access to all
units in the stack.
