Wild About Animals—Ready, Set, Roar
Oh, those crazy animals—what will they do next? Discover what makes them tick
with Ready, Set, Roar, the uproarious set that lets children leap, chirp, and swing
like their favorite animals, all in the name of learning! Every animal needs a
habitat and the striped, spotted, and dynamically colored mats provide the perfect
setting for children to get up and move while learning about colors, numbers, and
following directions. With play this animated, children will never look at animals
the same way again!
Components
•  20 Animal-print mats (8" square) including 4 mats each of 5 different animals
(tiger, giraffe, zebra, snake, and bird)
•  3 Cubes (1 number, 1 color, 1 animal)
Fast and Fun Moves
Whole class or small group
Quick Mat Jumping—Set out the mats. Have each child stand on one mat of their
choosing. Then, roll the animal cube. Children should jump to the nearest mat
that matches the animal on the cube. Note: If you have a larger group of children
doing this activity, ask children to instead put one foot on the nearest mat to
avoid crowding.
Alternative Versions of Play:
•  Roll the color cube and have children jump to the nearest mat that matches
the color facing up on the cube.
•  Do not use any cubes. This time, make an animal sound and have children
jump to the nearest mat that matches that sound.
•  State an animal fact, such as “Has feathers,” “Has stripes,” or “Eats leaves, not
meat.” Then, have children jump to the nearest mat that matches that fact.
At your discretion, ask a few children to justify why they jumped to a specific
mat (try rolling a number cube to determine how many children to ask).
Sleepy Time for Animals—Set out the mats, print-side facing up. Have each child
stand on a mat, and instruct them to begin acting like the animal whose mat
they’ve chosen. Roll the animal cube, announce the animal and say, “Sleep.”
Children on the appropriate mat should lay down and pretend to sleep like that
animal would sleep. After a little while, say “Wake up.” Have children stand back
up on their mats and resume acting like their animal. Roll the cube again and
continue in the same way.
For variation, roll the number cube. Have the animals that are not sleeping count
that number aloud to determine how long the animals should sleep. (Or, try
counting backward—when you get to 0, sleep time is over.)
Musical Mats—Use the mats for a game of musical chairs. Play music (a catchy
animal song would be perfect!) and have children walk along the mats. When the
music stops, roll the animal cube—anyone standing on that animal is out.
Teacher Says—A variation of “Simon Says,” Teacher Says shows children how to
follow directions while increasing their knowledge of the way animals behave.
Place the mats on the floor, print- or color-side up. Make sure the mats are spread
out; children should be an arm’s length apart from each other on either side.
Direct children where to stand.
Then, tell children that you will ask them to act like different animals, but that
they should only act if you first say, “Teacher says.” For example, if you say,
“Teacher says walk like a penguin,” they should put their two feet together and
waddle toward you. However, if you say, “Slither like a snake,” they should not
move because you didn’t first say, “Teacher says.” Any child who imitates an
animal without hearing “Teacher says” is eliminated and should sit down on a
mat. The last child standing is the winner.
Walking Path Challenge
Whole class, small group or individual
Use the mats to form a path from one end of the classroom to the other (or
down the hall, in the gym, etc.). First, have a student roll the animal cube. For
each animal rolled, set down a matching mat. Students continue taking turns
rolling and setting down mats until they can make a complete animal path. Once
the path is made, the challenge is on! Can children walk from one end of the
room to the other by stepping on only a certain print? For a fun variation, have
children make movements and sounds for the animals as they walk across their
corresponding mats!
Ready, Set, Roar!
Whole class or small group
1. Spread the mats around the room and have each child choose a mat to stand
on. Make sure at least one of every animal-print pattern is used.
2. Roll two cubes and call out what is rolled. Have children follow the directions
on the cubes. For example, if you roll a zebra and a 3, children on the zebra
mat should perform an action movement that you select (such as clapping,
running in place, stomping, jumping, and so on) three times.
3. If you roll the side of the animal cube with all the animals, then it is an ALL
PLAY! All players should do the animal movement.
The Herd’s the Word!
Use the mats to create flexible groups in a fun way!
•  Place the mats in your circle-time area. Direct children to sit on a certain mat
during circle time.
•  Line up the mats on the floor before leaving the classroom; direct children to
stand on a certain mat in the line. This makes lining up much more organized!
•  Have each student roll the animal cube and take the matching color mat. This
will be their spot for any activity. Tell children with the same color to form a
group and start the activity of your choosing.
•  Place different mats around the room. Ask children to find a mat and stand
on it. This will then form groups of children who are standing on the same
animal print.
