Silly starfish, cool clams, and kooky crabs serve up a variety of brain-teasing word problems
involving addition and subtraction up to 20. Solve solo, with a partner, or invite more
friends to join in on the fun using deep-sea manipulatives and color-coded cards. Jump in—
the water’s more than fine when Common Core meets the stars of the sea!
CCSS Alignment:
The activities in this guide target the following Common Core State Standards for Math in
First Grade:

Notes for Use:
• This set has been designed for four students to share the manipulatives evenly: every
student gets 1 clam shell, 5 of each color crab, and 5 of each color starfish. Distribute the
manipulatives before solving problems on the cards.
• Cards are color-coded: green for Level 1 (numbers within 10), orange for Level 2 (numbers
within 20), and purple for Level 3 (a challenging mix of problem types; for students
prepared to take the next step).
• The orange cards require more manipulatives than the standard amount for a student
working alone. Students can work with a partner or just use double the amount of
manipulatives to solve these problems.
• For variation, place all the manipulatives in the center of
the table and let students work on the same card. This
set is also perfect for demonstrating problem types at the
front of the classroom.
