position.Allowabouttwominutesforthisinitialbackwashcycle.Manuallyadjustthesolenoid(or
movethe3-wayvalveformanualsystems)tostopthebackwashcycleforthatltertank.
NOTE:ThemanualadjustmentforeachsolenoidshouldbeOFFfornormaloperation.ONisthe
manual override.
4 Initiateabackwashcycleforeachoftheremainingltertanksintheltersystem,asnotedabove.
Noneedtoadjustthethrottlingvalveagain.Ifbackwashwaterisnotrunningfairlyclearafterthis
initialbackwashing,repeatthebackwashingcycleforallltertanks.Itisnotunusualtorunthrough
threeormorebackwashcyclestoinitiallycleannewmediasand.
5 Duringthisinitialoperationandbackwashingcycling,inspecttheltersystemandconnections
foranyleaks.Adjustthethrottlingvalveonlyifsystemoworpressurechanges.Ifinadequate
backwashowisobserved,itmaybenecessarytoinstallavalveonthesystemowline
downstreamoftheltersystemtohelpdivertthenecessaryowtothebackwashcycle.Foran
automatic system, this downstream valve will need to be adjusted electronically to coincide with
eachbackwashcycle.
Periodic/Mid-Season Maintenance
Duringanoperatingseason,inspectionshouldbeperformedregularly.Howoftenyouinspectand
maintainyourltersystemcandeterminehowlongyourltersystemwilllast.
1 Shut off the system pump and disconnect power to the automatic controller. Open the upper
inspectionportsofeachltertankandinspectmediasandforquantityandquality.Lossofsand
suggestsexcessivebackwashing.Thepresenceofcontaminantsorslimesuggestsinadequate
backwashing.RefertoStart-upProceduresonpage10 forbackwashadjustments.
2 Viatheautomaticcontroller,initiateamanualbackwashcyclebypressingthemanualbuttonfor
onesecond.Eachltertankshouldbackwashasprogrammed.Notethedwelltimeandbackwash
duration.
3 Inspectalltubing&componentryforproperconnectionsandanydamage.
4 Checkthey-straineronthewateruptakekit;cleaninternalscreenifnecessary.
5 Checkthepressuregaugesforexpectedreadings.
Seasonal Shutdown Procedures
LAKOSrecommendsthatallSSTandPROIItanksbeshutdownwhennotinactiveuseforlong
periodsoftime.Todothis:
1 Performalongandsomewhataggressivebackwashcycleforallltertanksinthesystem,
backwashingeachtankforatleasttwominutesandopeningthebackwashthrottlingvalveabit
more than normal operation.
CAUTION: If any chemicals are introduced to the irrigation system at shutdown, it should be
downstreamoftheltersystem.Ifupstream,ushcleanwaterthroughtheltersystembefore
shuttingdowntheltersystematseason’send.
2 Shut down the system pump and disconnect power to the automatic controller (if applicable). Open
eachtankandinspectforsandquantityandquality.Ifadditionalornewsandisneeded,makenote
to add the necessary sand prior to start-up before next season.
CAUTION: Thepresenceofslimeanywhereinsidethetanksorexcessivecontaminantsthroughout
the sand media suggests the need to replace all media sand. Remove all sand from the media
tanksatthistime,butdonotintroducenewsanduntiljustpriortostart-upfornextseason.
