Aircraft–FCC regulations prohibit using your phone on a plane that is in the air. Turn your phone off before boarding aircraft. Keep phone dry If the phone gets wet, turn the power off immediately and return it to the dealer for service. Resetting the phone If the screen seems frozen and the keypad does not respond to keypresses, reset the phone by completing the following steps: 1. Remove the battery door. 2. Remove and replace the battery. If the problem persists, return the phone to the dealer for service. Radio Frequency (RF) energy Your telephone is a radio transmitter and receiver. When it is on, it receives and sends out RF energy. Your service provider’s network controls the power of the RF signal. This power level can range from 0.006 to 0.6 watts. In August 1996, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted RF exposure guidelines with safety levels for hand-held wireless phones. 1 GETTING STARTED This document describes the Kyocera 2235 trimode phone, with CDMA digital service at 800 MHz and 1900 MHz, and analog service at 800 MHz. Your phone comes with an internal/removable lithium ion (LiIon) battery. Installing the battery 1. Hold the phone face down. 2. Place the battery in the phone casing, with the metal contacts facing down and towards the bottom of the phone. 3. Align the battery door to the grooves on the bottom of the phone. 4.
Charging the battery The battery is partially charged when you receive your phone. You must have at least a partial charge in the battery to make or receive calls, regardless of whether or not the AC Adapter is connected to the phone. To charge the battery, connect the AC Adapter to the proper jack on the bottom of the phone (as shown), then connect the adapter’s plug to a wall outlet.
Caring for the battery This page describes important safety information and tips for improving battery performance. General safety guidelines • Do not take apart, puncture, or short-circuit the battery. • If you have not used the battery for more than a month, recharge it before using your phone. • Avoid exposing the battery to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or high humidity. • Never dispose of any battery in or near a fire. It could explode.
Common causes of battery drain The following functions drain the battery more quickly and adversely affect talk and standby times: • You are often playing games or using the Web. • Backlighting is frequently on. (To adjust backlighting, see page 72.) • The phone is frequently used in analog mode. If you do not see a on the home screen, the phone is in analog mode. To set your phone to operate in different modes, select Menu → Settings → Network → Digital or Analog and choose from the options available.
• The earpiece and ringer volume settings are high. To adjust volume, see page 65. • Review how often voicemail notifications, pages, and text messages are received, and how quickly they are acknowledged. To use power most efficiently, acknowledge notifications and messages immediately.
Getting to know your phone 6 1 Jack for Hands-free Headset (sold separately) only. 2 Home screen. Press Menu. 3 OK key selects a menu item or option. 4 Send/Talk key starts or answers a call. 5 Use the keypad to enter numbers, letters, or symbols. 6 Shift key changes the text mode in text entry. 7 Fully extend the antenna to make or answer a call. Push in the antenna completely when the phone is not in use.
9 End/Power key turns on and turns off the phone, ends a call, or returns to the home screen. 10 Navigator key scrolls through lists and menus; positions the cursor during text entry; and accesses shortcuts when pressed in any of the four directions from the home screen (see page 68). 11 Space key enters a space during text entry. 12 0 key cycles through word choices during T9® Text Input rapid text entry. 13 Jacks for AC Adapter (included) and data cable (sold separately).
Understanding screen icons The following icons may appear on your phone screen: The phone is operating in CDMA digital mode. If the phone is operating in analog mode. does not appear, The phone is receiving a signal. You can make and receive calls. Fewer bars indicate a weaker signal. The phone is not receiving a signal. You cannot make or receive calls. A call is in progress. The alarm clock is set. The phone vibrates or lights up instead of ringing. The phone is roaming outside of its home service area.
You have a text message, voicemail, or page. ( text message, voicemail, or page.) indicates an urgent The battery is fully charged. The more black bars, the greater the charge. Enhanced CDMA voice privacy is on, if available from your service provider, or you are in a secure web browser session. Press up. Press down. Press to go back or clear an item. Enter text using T9 rapid text entry. ® Enter text using normal alpha text entry. Capitalize the next letter when entering text.
Capitalize every letter when entering text. Capitalize the first letter of each word when entering text, or the first letter of each sentence in a text message. Enter symbols. Enter numbers.

To change your menu so that it appears as a list, see see page 70. • In this guide, the use of an arrow → tells you to select an option from a menu. For example, Menu → Settings means select Menu, then select Settings.
2 MAKING AND ANSWERING CALLS Making a call 1. Make sure you are in an area where the signal can be received. Look for the symbol on the home screen. Note: The more bars you see in this symbol, the clearer the reception will be. If there are no bars, try to move to where the reception is better. In some cases, this can be as simple as changing the direction you’re facing. 2. Fully extend the antenna. 3. Enter the phone number. 4. Press .
5. When you are done, press to end the call. Tip: You can also make calls using your phone’s voice recognition feature. See “Making a call using voice commands” on page 84. Redialing a number To redial the last number called, press prompting you to speak a name, press twice. If you see a message again. Answering a call When a call comes in, a dancing phone icon appears, along with the number of the caller. If the number is stored in your contacts directory, the contact name appears.
Answering calls Hands-Free If your phone is attached to a Hands-free Car Kit (sold separately), you can set it to answer an incoming call after five seconds. • Select Menu → Settings → Accessories → Auto-Answer → After 5 seconds. Dealing with missed calls When you have missed a call, a “Missed” message appears on your screen. This message remains, unless the caller leaves a voicemail. • Press or to clear the screen. • To view the caller’s number or name, select Calls.
Setting missed call alerts You can set up an alert to beep every five minutes after you have missed a call. • Select Menu → Settings → Sounds → Missed Call Alert → Enabled. • To turn off the alert when it rings, press or . • To cancel the alert option, select Menu → Settings → Sounds → Missed Call Alert → Disabled.
Viewing recent call details Details on the last 15 calls you made or received are stored in the Recent Calls list. You can get details on the caller’s name and phone number, the time they called, and the length of the call. Icons indicate the types of calls in the list.
To view call details: 1. Select Menu → Recent Calls. 2. Select a recent call item. 3. Select an option: – Time shows you the time of the call. – Number shows you the caller’s number (for an incoming call), or the number you called (for an outgoing call). – Save New allows you save the number in your Contacts directory. – Add to allows you to add the number to an existing contact card. – View Contact shows details on the contact if the caller’s information is already in your Contacts directory.
Erasing calls from the list To erase all calls from the Recent Calls list, refer to see page 79. Setting up speed dialing Speed dialing allows you to quickly dial a stored phone number by entering a one- or two-digit speed dialing location. 1. Open a saved contact. 2. Highlight the phone number and press . 3. Select Speed Dialing. 4. Select a speed dialing location. (Location “1” is reserved for your voicemail number.) 5. Press to select Assign.
Setting up 1-Touch Dialing 1-Touch Dialing is a form of speed dialing that allows you to press and hold a speed dial location to make a call. It is the fastest way to speed dial. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Extras → 1-Touch Dialing → Enabled. 2. Press . Using 1-Touch Dialing To dial a phone number, simply press and hold the assigned speed dialing location for the phone number. If it is a two-digit number, press the first number, then press and hold the second.
5. Select the number to remove. 6. Press 7. Press right to highlight Remove. . Finding a phone number If you have already saved a phone number, you can find it quickly by pressing down. This brings up a list of Frequent Contacts, followed by a complete list of all saved contacts. Scroll down the list, find the one you want, and press to dial the number. For more information on finding contact information, refer to see page 44.
Setting up voicemail Before your phone can record voicemail messages, you must set up a password and record a personal greeting. When you have set up your voicemail, all unanswered calls to your phone are automatically transferred to voicemail, even if your phone is in use or turned off. 1. From the home screen, press and hold . Note: If you are having trouble accessing your voicemail, contact your service provider. 2. Follow the system prompts to create a password and record a greeting.
If you still see “New Message” on your screen 1. Press to select Voice. This initiates a call to your voicemail number. 2. Follow the prompts to retrieve the message. For specific information on getting voicemail messages, contact your service provider. If you just see the symbol 1. Select Menu → Messages. 2. Select your Voicemail box. A message tells you there is a new message at your voicemail number. 3. Press to select Call. This initiates a call to your voicemail number. 4.
Erasing voicemail messages 1. Select Menu → Messages → Text InBox. Voicemail messages are indicated by a . 2. Select the voicemail item. 3. Press to select Erase. Changing your voicemail number The pre-assigned speed dialing number for accessing your voicemail is “1.” To change this number, do the following: 1. Select Menu → Messages → Msg Settings → Voicemail Number. 2. Select Edit to change the number. 3. Enter the new number.
Silencing your phone When you first get your phone, it is set to ring for incoming calls and make sounds for message alerts and menu navigation. Note: The phone will ring when it is attached to an external power source (such as a charger), even if the Silence All setting is selected. Silencing an incoming call If you need to silence an incoming call quickly, press . Then press to answer the call. This action silences the current call only. The next call will ring as normal.
Specifying just vibration or just lights 1. Select Menu → Settings → Silence All. 2. Select either Yes, vibe only or Yes, lights only. 3. Press to save your selection. Turning sounds back on The quickest way to turn sounds back on is to press right and hold. You can also use menus: 1. Select Menu → Settings → Silence All. 2. Select No, normal. 3. Press 28 to save your selection.
Adjusting the volume during a call To adjust the earpiece volume manually during a call, press down. up or Note: To set the phone to adjust the earpiece volume automatically based on the amount of noise around you or the other person’s voice volume level, see see page 65. Locking the keypad The Keyguard locks your keypad to protect your phone against accidental keypresses when the phone is turned on and a call is not in progress. You can still answer or silence an incoming call.
Changing the keyguard setting 1. Select Menu → Settings → Keyguard. 2. Highlight an option. You can set the phone to lock the keypad immediately, or if no key is pressed, after 30 seconds, 1 minute or 5 minutes. 3. Press to save. Keeping track of your calls Your phone has two timers that count the amount of calls you have made and received. All Calls This timer displays the total number and duration of all calls you have made and received. You cannot reset this timer.
Recent Calls This timer displays the total number and duration of recent calls you have made and received since the last time you reset the timer. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Call Information → Recent Calls Timer. 2. Press to select Reset. This resets the timer to zero. Timing your calls If you want to know how long you are spending on a call, you can set up your phone to beep 10 seconds before each minute. • Select Menu → Settings → Sounds → Minute Alert → Enabled.

Press to select an option: – Voice Only allows only voice calls. – Fax, next call sets the phone to fax mode for the next incoming call or the next 10 minutes. – Data, next call sets the phone to data mode for the next incoming call or the next 10 minutes. – Fax, until off forces the phone into fax mode until the phone is turned off. – Data, until off forces the phone into data mode until the phone is turned off.
Ensuring call privacy • You can set your phone to sound an alert if enhanced CDMA voice privacy is on (check with your service provider to see if CDMA voice privacy is enabled in your area). When voice privacy is activated during a call, you will see a message and a on your screen. • Select Menu → Settings → Network → Privacy Alert → Enabled.
3 STORING CONTACTS Use your phone’s Contacts directory like a set of phone index cards to store information about a person or company. Your phone can hold, on average, about 200 phone numbers. Saving a new contact 1. From the home screen, enter the phone number you want to save. 2. Press to select Save New. 3. Enter a name for the contact. If you need to know how to enter letters, see see page 36. 4. Press to select Save. -orPress right, then press to select Options.
– Save—Save information and return to the home screen. – Number Type—Select work, home, mobile, pager, or fax. – Add Voice Dial—Speak the name of the contact person for this number. This is so that you can dial numbers according to voice recognition (VR). For more information see see page 84. – Speed Dialing—Select a speed dialing location from the list. – Secret—Select Yes to lock the phone number.
Entering letters, numbers, and symbols Use this table for general instructions for entering letters, numbers, and symbols in a contact card. Understanding text entry modes There are four modes: Number mode Normal Text Enter Name: Rapid Text ® Symbol mode Save O... Note: The mode you start in depends on the task you are doing. Entering numbers • In mode, press a number key once. • In mode, press and hold a number key until the number appears on the screen. • In mode, press and hold a number key until the number appears on the screen.
Entering words letter by letter 1. Press a key once for the first letter, twice for the second letter, and so on. 2. Wait for the cursor to move right and enter the next letter. ® Entering words quickly When you press a series of keys in rapid text mode, TegicTM T9® Text Input checks its dictionary of common words and guesses at the word you are trying to spell. 1. For each letter of the word you want, press the key once. For example, to enter the word “any” press: → → .
Entering symbols You can access a subset of symbols by pressing the complete list, use the symbol text mode. 1. Press right to highlight the mode. 2. Press to enter the text entry menu. key. Changing text entry modes Change modes to enter a character from a different mode. For example, to enter numbers in an email address while you’re in normal text entry mode. You can either: • Press to switch modes. • Press right to highlight the text entry mode, press menu, then select a different text entry mode. to enter the Adding a code or extension When you save the phone number of an automated service, you may include a pause where you would select an option or enter a password.
3. Press to select a type of pause. 4. Enter the remaining numbers. A timed pause causes the phone to stop dialing for two seconds. A hard pause causes the phone to stop dialing until you select Release.
Editing a contact 1. Select Menu → Contacts. 2. To find the contact you want to edit, select either View All or Find Name. 3. Press to select the contact to edit. 4. Select Options to edit the entire contact, or select the specific information (such as the phone number) you want to edit. 5. Enter the new information. 6. If finished, press to select Save. Erasing information from a contact 1. Select Menu → Contacts → View All. 2. Press to select a card. 3.
Select the phone number, then select Erase Number to erase the phone number. 4. Select Yes to erase. Finding contact information There are three main methods for finding a phone number or contact details: checking the Frequent Contacts list, searching the Contacts directory, and using Fast Find. Checking the Frequent Contacts list From the home screen, press down to see up to 15 of the most frequently called contacts, in order from most frequent to least frequent.
Searching the Contacts directory 1. Select Menu → Contacts. 2. Select a search method: – To view a list of names, select View All – To find a specific name, select Find Name. Enter part of the name and select Find. 3. Scroll down until you find the name you want. – To call the contact, select the number and press – To display the full contact, press . . Setting up Fast Find With Fast Find, you press one or two keys to view close matches of the number you are looking for. 1.
Using Fast Find 1. Press the keys corresponding to the letters of the name you want to find. The matching contacts appear on the screen. Note: Speed dial locations appear before names if they use the same keys. For example, to look for Abe’s contact entry, you press for “A”. However, there is a speed dial location associated with 2, so the speed dial contact appears first. To find Abe’s number, you would then press the key that corresponds to the next letter of his name. 2.
4 SENDING AND RECEIVING TEXT MESSAGES This chapter describes how to send, receive, and erase text messages from your phone. If you are looking for information on voicemail messages, see see page 24. Important: The features and menus described in this chapter may vary depending on services available in your area. In addition, usage charges may apply to each message. For clarification on these issues, check with your service provider.
2. Enter the phone number or email address of the person to whom you are sending the message, or select Contacts to choose a saved phone number or email address. Note: If you wish to enter an email address, you need to switch text entry modes. To enter letters, press to switch to mode. To enter symbols, press until you find the symbol you want. See see page 38 for more information on text entry modes. 3. Press to select Next. 4.
5. When you are finished with the body of the message, press Next. to select 6. Choose one of the following options: – Send Message to send the message immediately. A copy is then saved to your Text OutBox. – Callback Number to include a callback number with the message. See see page 51. – Delivery Receipt to request notification when the message has been received. – Priority to label the message as “Urgent.” – Send Later to schedule when to send the message. For help, see see page 53.
Receiving incoming calls while creating messages • If you answer the call, you can continue working on the message when you are finished with the call by selecting Menu → Messages → Text OutBox and opening the message. • If you don’t wish to answer the call, select Ignore. The call is silenced and you return to the screen you were working in. Sending a message to several recipients If you are sending a message to more than one person, enter a space or a comma between each phone number or email address.
Sending a pre-written message Your Kyocera 2235 phone comes with a set of commonly used messages, such as “Call me,” “Need directions,” or “I’m delayed.” 1. Select Menu → Messages → Send New and enter the phone number or email address of the recipient. 2. Select Next. 3. Press right and select AutoMsg. 4. Adding an emoticon Your Kyocera 2235 phone has a special set of emotion icons, or “emoticons” that you can add to a text message. These emoticons are like a sophisticated set of “smiley faces.” If the recipient’s phone supports the same technology as your phone, they appear as you see them. If they are not supported, the icons appear in a more simplistic form. To add an emoticon to a message 1. From the message entry screen, place the cursor where you would like to enter the emoticon. 2.
Sending a message at a scheduled time If you do not wish to send the message immediately, you can schedule to send it later. 1. Create the message, and choose Send Later from the message Options screen. (See “Sending a new text message” on page 47.) 2. Select a time when you wish the message to be sent (the options are 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 12 hours, 1 day, 2 days, and 3 days). The message is scheduled for delivery and stored in your Text OutBox. 3.
Sending a previously saved message 1. Select Menu → Messages → Filed. 2. Press select one. 3. Press up or down through the list of messages and press to to select Send To. 4. Enter the phone number or email address of the person to whom you are sending the message, or select Contact to select a phone number or email address from a contact. 5. Press to select Next.
Viewing the Text OutBox 1. Select Menu → Messages → Text OutBox. 2. Press up or down through the list of messages. One of the following symbols appears next to each message: The message is pending and will be sent when possible. You can cancel delivery of the message. 3 The message is scheduled to be sent at a scheduled time. You cannot cancel delivery of the message. X The message cannot be sent because service is not available. An alert appears on your phone if the message cannot be sent.

Press to accept the message text. – For help including a callback number, see see page 51. – For help scheduling an amount of time to wait before sending the message, see see page 54. – For help requesting delivery notification or labeling the message as Urgent, see see page 47. 4. When you are ready, select Send Message. A copy is saved to your Text OutBox. Retrieving a text message When a text message is received, two things appear on your screen: • A note: “New Message: 1 Text”.

Erasing text messages You have the option of erasing messages as you read them, erasing them one-at-a-time from the list in the Text InBox, or erasing them all at once. It is a good idea to erase old messages, as you have limited memory on your phone. Erasing single messages 1. Select Menu → Messages. 2. Press down and press to select the type of message you want to erase (Text InBox, Text OutBox, or Filed). 3. Press to select the message to erase. 4. Select Erase to erase the message.
Erasing all messages at once 1. Select Menu → Messages → Erase Msgs. 2. Press up or down and press to select an option: – No cancels the erase request. – Entire InBox erases all messages in your Text InBox. – Old InBox erases all read messages in your Text InBox. – Entire OutBox erases all messages in your Text OutBox. – Filed erases all messages in the Filed folder. 3. A message appears: “Erase ALL?” Select Yes to erase messages or No to cancel.
Having messages automatically erased (Auto-Erase Text) Use this setting to have old messages automatically erased when memory is low. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Messaging → Auto-Erase Text. 2. Press 62 to select Old InBox.
5 CUSTOMIZING YOUR PHONE Choosing a different ringer Your Kyocera 2235 phone has several ringers you can choose from for your incoming calls. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Sounds → Ringer Type. 2. Scroll down the list to hear the different rings. 3. Press to select a ringer from the list. Specifying ringers for different calls You can set up your phone to ring differently depending on the type of call you get. 1.
3. Select a ringer from the list. Importing additional ringers You can import additional ringers into your Kyocera 2235 phone using the Kyocera Phone Desktop software (sold separately). It appears on the home screen above the time and date. The banner can be up to 14 characters long. 1.
4. Enter your new text.(For help, see see page 36.) 5. Press to save. Choosing a different time/date format 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Time/Date Format. 2. Highlight the option you want. Adjusting volume Adjusting the earpiece volume To adjust the earpiece volume manually during a call, press down to find a comfortable level.
Setting automatic volume adjustment You can set your phone to automatically adjust the earpiece volume during a call, based on the surrounding noise level. 1. Place a call from a quiet environment and set the volume to a comfortable level. 2. When you are finished with the call, select Menu → Settings → Sounds → Smart Sound. 3. Select Enabled. The volume you have just set is now used as a baseline. You can still manually adjust the volume during a call. 4. Press to save the setting.
Changing the key beep The key beep is the sound made when you press the keys on the keypad. You can change the sound (tones or clicks), length (normal or long), and volume of the key beep. To change the various elements of the key beep, select Menu → Settings → Sounds and choose either Key Beep Volume, Key Beep Length, or Key Beep Sound.
Using shortcuts From your home screen, you can access four shortcuts, just by pressing the navigation key in any one of the four directions: The shortcut you define. Press and hold to lock/unlock the keypad. * Up Left Right Press and hold to set the phone to vibrate. Down + Access your saved Contacts. Three shortcut keys are automatically programmed into your phone (left, right, and down). For the fourth (up), you can assign a shortcut to one of the various features of your phone.
Creating a feature shortcut 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Shortcut Key. 2. Highlight the feature you want set as a shortcut, and press select it. to – If you choose any of the following: InBox, Send New Msg, Voice Shortcut, Ringer Volume, Recent Calls, Business List, Personal List, Web Browser, Stopwatch, Calculator, or Voice Memo, their respective menu or feature appears. – Send New Msg prepares you for sending a new text message.
Accessing a feature shortcut From the home screen, press up and follow the prompts. Re-assigning a feature shortcut To change the shortcut you have assigned, press up from the home screen, select Setup and choose another shortcut from the list. Changing the look and feel Choosing a different menu view You can change the appearance of the menus you see when you select Menu from the home screen.
To change the menu view: Select Menu → Settings → Display → Main Menu View, then the option you want: Small Icons Large Icons Contacts Contacts List Menus Main Menu Browser Contacts Web Browser Messages (Note: If you change to List Menus, you will need to press down to see menus.
Adjusting the backlighting Your screen generally lights up while you are in a call or when you press a key on the keypad. However, you can change when and how backlighting lights up. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Backlighting. 2. Select an option from the list: – Disabled turns backlighting off completely. – 10 seconds turns backlighting on for 10 seconds after your last keypress. – 30 seconds turns backlighting on for 30 seconds after your last keypress. – 10 sec.
Note: Keeping backlighting on during a call drains the battery more quickly and reduces talk and standby times. Setting Power Backlighting You can set backlighting to remain on when an external power, such as the AC Adapter, is used with the phone. Note: Power Backlighting may not be available with some accessories. Check with your service provider. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Accessories → Power Backlighting. 2. Select Always on to keep backlighting on.
Changing the display contrast 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Display Contrast. 2. Select the level of contrast you want (Highest, High, Medium, Low, and Lowest). Setting numbers to auto-hyphenate Auto-hyphenation automatically inserts hyphens into your phone numbers to be consistent with the U.S. dialing plan. For example, 1-800-555-1111. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Auto-Hyphenation. 2. Select Enabled to turn this feature on.
1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Screen Saver. 2. Select one of the available examples. 3. Press to return to the home screen and wait 10 seconds to view the screen saver you chose. Choosing a different language Your phone supports English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese languages. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Language. 2. Select the language and press . 3. Press the appropriate keys to enter special characters.
Creating a secure environment This section describes all the features involved in securing your phone and preventing access to personal information. All security features are shielded by a four-digit lock code. Changing your lock code The lock code is typically 0000 or the last 4 digits of your phone number. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Security. 2. Enter your lock code and select Change Lock Code. A message appears: “Change Lock Code?” 3. Select Yes and enter a new code, then press code again. 76 .
Locking your phone When your phone is locked, you can call only your service provider number, a priority number, or a number your service provider has set up as an emergency number. You can still receive incoming calls. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Security → Lock Phone Use. 2. Select an option: – Never does not lock the phone. – On power up locks the phone every time you turn it on. – Now locks the phone immediately. 3. Press . Unlocking the phone 1. From the home screen, select Unlock. 2.
Restricting calls You can restrict the calls that can be made from your phone to only those that have been saved in your Contacts Directory. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Security → Limit Calls Out. 2. Select Yes, to Contacts. Clearing personal information To clear all personal information from your phone at once, you can erase all contacts from the Contacts directory, and/or erase the Recent Calls list. Erasing all contacts 1. Select Menu → Settings → Security → Erase All Contacts. 2.
Erasing the calls list 1. Select Menu → Settings → Security → Erase Calls List. 2. Select Yes to erase all recent calls. A message appears: “Erase Calls?” 3. Select Yes to erase all recent calls. Setting message alerts You can choose how you want be alerted of incoming voicemail, pages, or text messages. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Messaging → the type of alert (Message, Net, Page, or Voicemail). 2. Press to select an option: – Disabled does not alert you when a message is received.
– Vibe & remind sets the phone to vibrate once when a new message is first received, and once every five minutes. To stop the reminder, press to select Ignore. – Soft beep once sets the phone to beep once softly when a message is received. – Soft beeps sets the phone to beep softly approximately every five minutes. To stop this reminder, press to select Ignore. – Loud beep once sets the phone to beep once loudly when a message is received.
Setting alerts for your headset When a headset (sold separately) is attached to the phone, you can set alert sounds to originate from the headset. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Accessories → Headset Ringing. 2. Select Out of headset to have alerts originate from the headset. Connecting to a laptop or a PC The Com Port speed sets the data rate at which your phone connects to a laptop or PC. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Accessories → Com Port Speed. 2. Select the speed. The options are: 19.2 kbps, 115.
6 USING VOICE RECOGNITION Voice Recognition is a unique feature on your Kyocera 2235 phone that allows you to activate calls and special features by speaking commands into the phone’s microphone. Recording voice commands In order to make or receive calls using voice recognition, contacts must be saved and have associated voice commands, or “voice dials.” Recording a voice command for a new contact 1. From the home screen, enter the phone number of the person you want to call. 2.
5. Select Add Voice Dial. 6. At the tone or prompt, say a name, then repeat the name as instructed. You hear “(Name) added” or, if the name was not saved, you are instructed to try again. 7. If finished, press Successfully Saved!” to select Save. A message appears: “Contact You are now ready to make a call using this voice command. See see page 84. Recording a voice command for an existing contact 1. From the home screen, select Menu → Contacts → View All. 2.
6. Press to select Save. You are now ready to make a call using this voice command. Making a call using voice commands 1. If you haven’t already done so, record a voice command for the person you wish to call. See “Recording voice commands” on page 82. 2. From the home screen, press . The phone responds: “Say a name.” 3. Say the name of the person you want to call. 4. If the name you said matches a contact in the Voice Dial List, the phone responds: “Calling (Name).
5. When you are finished, press . You cannot end the call with a voice command. Answering a call with voice commands You can use voice commands to answer an incoming call only if your phone is connected to an accessory such as a Hands-free Car Kit or Headset (both sold separately) and Auto-Answer is turned off (see “Answering calls HandsFree” on page 17.) 1. Select Menu → Settings → Voice Services → Voice Answer → Enable.
Ignoring an incoming call To ignore an incoming call, do one of the following: • Say “No” and press to silence the alert. • Remain silent. The voice alert repeats twice and the phone rings once, then returns to the home screen. Using voice shortcuts You can use voice commands to quickly access features of your phone.
Creating a voice shortcut 1. Select Menu → Settings → Voice Services → Voice Shortcuts. 2. Select the item for which you want to record a voice shortcut. The phone says: “Speak a shortcut name.” 3. Say the shortcut you want to record. You can record any word you wish. It is recommended you record a word you will easily remember. The phone says: “Again.” 4. Say the shortcut again. If the two words you said match, the phone says: “Shortcut (Name) saved.
Using a voice shortcut Once you have created a voice shortcut for a feature (see “Creating a voice shortcut”), you can access the feature by pressing and holding up and by speaking the shortcut when prompted. Training Voice Recognition If your phone is having trouble recognizing your voice, you can train it with the commands “yes,” “no,” and “wake up.” Note: The Wake up command is used with a Hands-free Car Kit or Headset (both sold separately) to turn the phone on. 1.
Recording a voice memo You can record and play back voice recordings using the voice memo feature. Note: You can access voice memo quickly by setting up a shortcut key. See “Creating a feature shortcut” on page 69. Recording a voice memo 1. Select Menu → Settings → Voice Services → Voice Memo → Record New. The phone says: “Please record at the tone.” 2. Say your memo and select Stop when finished. 3. To attach a name to the memo, select Name.
Playing a voice memo 1. Select Menu → Settings → Voice Services → Voice Memo. 2. Scroll through the list of voice memos and press you want. 3. Press to select the one to select Play. Rewinding or fast forwarding a voice memo You can rewind or fast forward a voice memo while the memo is playing, by pressing left to rewind or right to fast forward.
7 CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET You can use your phone to browse the Internet if you have obtained phone Internet services from your service provider and if over-the-air Internet access is available in your area. Note: You cannot receive incoming calls while you are using the Web Browser. Starting the Web Browser 1. Select Menu → Web Browser. A message informs you that airtime fees apply for browser use. For more information about how airtime is charged, contact your service provider.
If this is the first time you have connected to the Internet, a message informs you that security is not yet enabled for your Web Browser. 3. Press to select Yes to enable security. When you are connected to the Web Browser, your home page will look something like this: 1 News 2 Weather 3 Sports Your home page has a list of bookmarks, and a number of web menu options on the bottom of the screen. OK Home Ma... 4. You are now ready to use the Internet. 92 – A appears in a secure session.

When you have finished using the Internet, press browser. to exit the Using the web menu options The following options may appear on your screen: • Home returns you to the main Web Browser window, or home page. • Mark Site saves the current location as a bookmark for easy access.
– About Openwave™ displays information about your Web Browser version. – Encryption should not be used unless you are instructed to do so by your service provider. – UP.Link selects a different browser server. You can use this option if you have more than one Web Browser account, such as one for business and one for personal use. – Restart restarts the Web Browser. Searching for a Web site How you search for a website depends on your service provider.
Bookmarking a Web site When you have found a Web site that you want to access quickly, you can bookmark it so that it will be easily accessible from the home page. 1. Go to the site you would like to bookmark. For help finding a Web site, see “Searching for a Web site” on page 94. 2. Ensure that you are looking at the actual page you would like to access. 3. Select Mark Site from the bottom of the screen. Going to a bookmarked site 1. Select Menu → Web Browser. 2.
Checking use amounts Your phone has a timer that counts the number and total duration of Web calls you have made since the last time you reset the timer. • Select Menu → Settings → Call Information → Browser Timer. • Select Reset to reset the timer to zero. Note: A single browser session may consist of several browser calls. Changing the browser prompt You can choose to receive a confirmation prompt whenever you start or exit the Web Browser. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Extras → Browser Prompt. 2.

8 USING TOOLS & GAMES The Tools & Games menu offers a variety of helpful items and four games. Using Tools Alarm Clock 1. Use the Alarm Clock to set an alert for a specific time. The alert occurs only if the phone is on. – Select Menu → Tools & Games → Alarm Clock → Set. – Press up or down to select an hour and minutes. – Press a.m./p.m. left or right to switch between hours, minutes, and – Enter numbers using the phone keypad. 2. Press 98 to save.
3. When the alarm rings, select Snooze to silence the alarm for 10 minutes, or select Off to turn off the alarm. Tip Calculator The Tip Calculator helps you calculate how much tip to include on a bill. 1. Select Menu → Tools & Games → Tip Calculator. 2. Enter the amount of your bill and press . 3. Select the amount you want to include as a tip (15%, 18%, 20%, 10%, 5%, Other) and press . Your total bill appears, including tip. 4. If you want to split the bill, press Split. 5.
Calculator Use the calculator for basic mathematical equations. 1. Select Menu → Tools & Games → Calculator. 2. Use the keypad to enter numbers. 3. Press to select mathematical operations. = equal + add x multiply ÷ divide - subtract . decimal point C Clear all numbers entered and display a zero. MR Display the value currently stored in memory. M+ Add the displayed digit to the value stored in memory. MC Clear the value currently stored in memory.
Clear one function or one digit from the screen and return the calculator to digit entry mode. Hold down to clear all of the digits and operations and display a zero. Exit the calculator and return to home screen. Countdown Timer This timer counts down for a specified amount of time. It beeps when that amount of time has elapsed. 1. Select Menu → Tools & Games → Countdown Timer. 2. Press 3. Press to Set. up or down to set the hours, minutes, and seconds. To move the cursor, press left or right. 4.
5. When the alarm rings, press to silence it. Stopwatch 1. Select Menu → Tools & Games → Stopwatch. 2. Select Start to have the stopwatch begin counting. 3. Select Stop to stop counting. 4. Select Reset to set the counter back to zero and begin counting again. 5. Press when finished. Playing Games There are four games that come with the Kyocera 2235 phone: Mystic I Ching, Cavern Crawl, Space Dudes, and Brick Attack.
Mystic I Ching™ The I Ching is a 3,000-year-old collection of 64 fortunes written in China. Each fortune has a number, a name, and a mystical description. This game gives you your fortune based on the option you select. 1. Select Menu → Tools & Games → Mystic I Ching. 2. Select a game option: – Your Fortune—At the prompt, think of a question you want answered. Your fortune appears. – Quick Yes/No—Think of a question that would require a yes/no answer and then press – to have your question answered.
– Reference Version—At the prompt, enter your lucky 2-digit number (for numbers lower than 10, enter 0 before the numeral, e.g., 07). Press to see the Chinese name and fortune associated with your number. Changing the sounds and instructions 1. Select Menu → Tools & Games → Mystic I Ching → Settings. 2. Select an option: – Sounds allows you to determine when you hear music with this game. Choose Sound Always, During Title, or No Sound. – Instruction Display lets you choose how to view instructions.
Cavern Crawl™ This adventure game sends the player through a multi-layer maze inside a large cavern while fighting monsters, gathering gold, and finding treasure. The goal of the game is for the player to gain as many points as possible before being killed. To collect items or attack monsters, simply move over them. Monsters attack you by attempting to move over your spot. To play the game: 1. Select Menu → Tools & Games → Cavern Crawl → New Game. 2. Press 3. Press to enter the game.
Note: When you exit the game, you do not lose your place. You can resume by going back to Cavern Crawl and selecting Resume Saved. Changing sounds and instructions 1. Select Menu → Tools & Games → Cavern Crawl → Settings. 2. Select an option: – Sound allows you to determine when you hear music with this game. Choose Sound Always, During Title, or No Sound. – Messages allows you to set status information as One Line or Full Screen. 3. Press 106 to save your setting.
Space Dudes™ The goal of this game is to shoot down the space dudes before they shoot you. • Select Menu → Tools & Games → Space Dudes. Play begins immediately. – Press up to shoot the space dudes. – Press left or right to reposition your ship. – Press to pause the game. Your ship has three lives. The first two times your ship is hit you will be prompted to either Resume the game or to begin a New game. The third time your ship is hit, you must start a New game or exit.
Brick Attack™ The goal of this game is to eliminate bricks arranged in levels. To do this, you send a moving ball upward using a paddle at the bottom of the screen. 1. Select Menu → Tools & Games → Brick Attack. 2. Press to select New. – To pause the game, press – To move the paddle, press , then press left or right. 3. To exit the game, highlight Exit and press 108 to Resume. .
