1 Getting Started This document describes the Kyocera 2255 trimode phone, with CDMA digital service at 800 MHz and 1900 MHz, and analog service at 800 MHz. Installing the battery 1. Hold the phone face down. 2. Place your thumb in the groove on the back of the phone, and slide the battery door down until it stops. 3. Lift the battery door off the phone. 4. Place the battery into the phone with the metal contacts facing down.
5. Align the battery door to the grooves on the top and side of the phone. 6. Slide the battery door up until it clicks into place. Repeat if the battery door is not aligned. Do not force. Removing the battery 1. Turn off the phone by holding down until “Powering off” appears. 2. Hold the phone face down. 3. Place your thumb in the groove on the back of the phone, and slide the battery door down until it stops. 4. Lift the battery door off of the phone. 5. Lift and slide the battery out of the phone.

Screen icons The following icons may appear on your phone screen: The phone is operating in CDMA digital mode. The phone is receiving a signal. You can make and receive calls. The phone is not receiving a signal. You cannot make or receive calls. A call is in progress. The alarm clock is set. The phone vibrates or lights up instead of ringing. The phone is roaming outside of its home area. You have a text message, voicemail, or page. Battery is fully charged. The more black bars, the greater the charge.
Enter text using normal alpha text entry. Enter numbers only. Enter symbols only. Capitalize the next letter when entering text. Capitalize every letter when entering text. Capitalize the first letter of each word when entering text. Using menus In this guide, → tells you to select an option from a menu. For example, Menu → Settings means select Menu, then select Settings. • From the home screen, press to select Menu, then press left or right to see menus.

Basic functions To turn on the phone • Press . ¤ and the home screen appear when the phone is turned on and is ready to make or receive a call. To turn off the phone • Hold down until “Powering off” appears (about 3 seconds). To make a call 1. Extend the antenna. 2. Enter the phone number. 3. Press . To end a call • Press . To answer a call • Press 8 .
To redial the last number called • Press twice. To find your phone number • Select Menu → Phone Info. Your phone number appears. To silence the ringer or alert During an incoming call only: • Highlight the Silence or Ignore option and press . When the phone rings, the call appears as a missed call. Any message left by the caller goes to your InBox. Note: To silence all sounds and set the phone to vibrate or light up instead of ringing, see “Silence All” on page 44.
To mute a call To set the phone so that your caller does not hear background noise during a call: • Press right to highlight Mute and press . To turn Mute off during a call: • Highlight Unmute and press . To adjust the volume manually • To adjust the earpiece volume manually during a call, press down. up or To adjust the volume automatically (Smart Sound) To set the phone to adjust the earpiece volume automatically based on the amount of noise around you or the other person’s voice volume level: 1.
3. Select Menu → Settings → Sounds → Smart Sound. 4. Select one of the following: – Enabled adjusts the volume automatically. The volume you just set is used as a baseline. You can manually adjust the volume during a call. – Disabled keeps the volume level the same unless you adjust it using . 5. Press to save the setting. To set up voicemail All unanswered calls are automatically transferred to voicemail.
To lock the keypad To protect your phone from accidental keypresses when a call is not in progress: • Press left and hold. To unlock the keypad • Press → → in this order. Shortcuts from the home screen Three shortcut keys are automatically programmed into your phone. You can define the fourth shortcut key yourself by following the steps in “To define a shortcut key” on page 13.
• Press up to activate or to define a shortcut key. To define a shortcut key You can define a shortcut key that allows you to quickly access a specific menu item by pressing up from the home screen. To define a shortcut key, complete the following steps from the home screen: 1. Press up. 2. Press to select Define. 3. Press up or down to scroll through the options, and press select an option from the list: to – InBox accesses your Text InBox.
– Personal List opens a list of phone numbers classified as Personal. – Web Browser opens the Web Browser. – Stopwatch opens the stopwatch. – Calculator opens the calculator. – Voice Memo prompts you to record a memo. – None defines no shortcut. To modify a shortcut key To change your shortcut: 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Shortcut Key. 2. Select an option from the list. This shortcut key can now be used by pressing up from the home screen. 3.
2 Battery Your phone comes with an internal/removable lithium ion (LiIon) battery. To learn how to install the battery, see page 1. The battery is partially charged when you receive the phone. Before using your phone, fully charge the battery. Charging the battery Connect the AC Adapter to the proper jack on the bottom of the phone as shown below, then connect the adapter’s plug to a wall outlet.
Power-save mode Your phone switches to power-save mode after several unsuccessful attempts to locate a signal. When the phone is in power-save mode, you cannot make or receive calls, and “Power Save Mode” and appear on the screen. Press any key to exit. Battery guidelines • Do not disassemble, puncture, or short-circuit the battery. • If you have not used the battery for more than a month, recharge it before using your phone. • Avoid extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and high humidity.
• Backlighting is frequently on. (To adjust backlighting, see page 47.) • The phone is frequently used in analog mode. If is not visible on your home screen, you are in analog mode. To set your phone to operate in different modes, select Menu → Settings → Network → Digital or Analog and choose from the options available: Automatic, Analog only, to save. Analog call or Digital only. Press • You are far away from a base station or cell site when in digital mode.
• The Call Ring/Vibe setting is on. To change this setting, select Menu → Settings → Sounds → Call Ring/Vibe → Ring Only. • Review how often voicemail notifications, pages, and text messages are received, and how quickly they are acknowledged. To use power most efficiently, acknowledge notifications and messages immediately.
3 Contacts Use your phone’s Contacts directory like a set of phone index cards to store information about a person or company. Before using the Contacts directory, see “Entering letters, numbers, and symbols” on page 31. Working with contact cards To save a phone number 1. From the home screen, enter the phone number that you want to save. Note: To add pauses while entering a number, see “To enter pauses in a phone number” on page 21. 2. Press to Save New. Go to step 3.
4. Press to Save. “Contact Successfully Saved” appears. -orPress right to highlight Options, then press to select it. 5. Choose an option from the list by highlighting it and pressing . – Save—Save information and return to the home screen. – Number Type—Select work, home, mobile, pager, or fax. – Add Voice Dial—Say the contact’s name into the microphone. – Speed Dialing—Select a speed dialing location from the list. – Secret—Select Yes to lock the phone number.
You can also save a phone number through the Contacts directory as follows: 1. Select Menu → Contacts → Add New → Phone Number. 2. Enter the phone number up to as many digits as will fit on the screen. 3. Press twice to select Next. Enter the name. 4. Go to Step 3 in “To save a phone number” on page 19. To enter pauses in a phone number When you save the phone number of an automated service, such as voicemail, you may include a pause where you would be required to select an option or enter a password.
2. Press right through the options at the bottom of the screen. 3. Press to select a type of pause. indicates a timed pause. indicates a hard pause. 4. Enter the remaining numbers. To edit a contact card 1. Select Menu → Contacts. 2. Locate the contact you want to edit by selecting View All or Find Name. 3. Highlight the contact you want to edit. 4. Press to select the contact. 5. Select Options to Add New, Erase Contact, Edit Name, Classify Contact, or Exit.
– Add Voice Dial—Add a voice tag to the number. – Speed Dialing—Select a speed dial location from the list. – Edit Type—Select work, home, mobile, pager, fax. – Erase Number—Erase the number from the contact card. – Erase Voice Dial—Remove the voice tag from the number. – Edit Number—Edit the number as desired. – Edit Voice Dial—Edit the voice tag for the number. – Secret—Select Yes to hide the phone number. If a phone number is locked, you must enter your four-digit lock code to view or edit the number.
To erase information from a contact 1. Select Menu → Contacts → View All. 2. Highlight the contact and press . 3. Select Options → Erase Contact to erase the entire contact card. -orSelect the phone number, then Erase Number. 4. Select Yes to erase or No to cancel. To search the Contacts directory The Contacts directory lists entries alphabetically. You can search through a list of all contacts, speed dialing entries, or cards of a specific type, or you can enter the name for which you are searching. 1.
– Select Find Name to search for a specific name. Enter all or part of the name and press to select Find. A list of matching names appears. 3. Press down until you find the name you want. – To call the contact, highlight the contact and press – To display the full contact card, press . . To search using Fast Find To enable Fast Find • Select Menu → Settings → Extras → Fast Find → Enable. To use Fast Find From the home screen: 1.
Note: Speed dial locations matching the numbers you entered appear first. For example, if you enter the numbers → → to find a contact named “Jane,” and you have phone numbers assigned to speed dial locations 5 and 52, those contacts appear first. To call from the Contacts directory 1. Select Menu → Contacts → View All. -orPress down from the home screen. 2. Select a name from the list and press 3. Select the number and press . .
To set a speed dialing location 1. Open a saved contact card. 2. Select the phone number to assign a speed dialing location. 3. Select Speed Dialing. 4. Select a speed dialing location. (Location “1” is reserved for your voicemail number.) 5. Press to Assign. To remove a speed dialing location 1. Select Menu → Contacts → Speed Dial List. 2. Select a speed dialing location and press . 3. Select the number to remove and press . 4. Select Speed Dialing. 5. Press right to select Remove. 6. Press .
To speed dial From the home screen: • Enter the one- or two-digit assigned speed dial number and press . 1-Touch Dialing To enable 1-Touch Dialing 1-Touch Dialing allows you to press and hold a speed dial location to call a phone number. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Extras → 1-Touch Dialing → Enabled. 2. Press . To use 1-Touch Dialing • Enter the 1- or 2-digit speed dialing number and hold down the last number. For example, if the speed dialing number is 15, press , then press and hold .
Working with Recent Calls Recent Calls lists the last 15 calls. Calls are identified by type. (Some types may not be available on all phones.) Call to Forwarded call Call from Missed call Three-way call To view recent calls 1. Select Menu → Recent Calls. 2. To view details about a call, select a call entry. 3. Select an option: – If the call is from a number that has not been saved as a contact, select Time, Number, Save New, or Add to.
Note: If the number has been saved as “secret,” you will need to enter your four-digit lock code to view or edit the number. To make a phone number secret, see page 19. To dial from the recent calls list 1. From the home screen, select Menu → Recent Calls. 2. Select the call entry in the list. 3. Press to call the number. To erase recent calls 1. Select Menu→ Settings → Security. 2. Enter your four-digit lock code (see page 62). 3. Select Erase Recent Calls. – Select Yes to erase all recent calls.
Entering letters, numbers, and symbols You can enter letters, numbers, and symbols in a contact card. The default text entry mode is . • To move the cursor, press • To enter spaces, press right or left. . • To move the cursor, press right or left. • To erase single characters, press . • To erase all characters, press and hold • To change capitalization, press and hold mode is active. . while T9 or ABC text entry Capitalize the next letter. To use text entry modes To enter letters in mode 1. Press the key once for the first letter, twice for the second letter, and so on. 2. After the cursor moves right, enter the next letter. To enter words in Text Input rapid entry mode ® 1. Press each letter key once. For example, to enter the word “how,” press keys → → . 2. Press to cycle through words. 3. Press right when you see the word you want. To enter symbols in 1. Press mode down through the list of symbols. 2.
To enter numbers in mode • Press a key once to enter the number on the key. To enter numbers in or mode ® • Press and hold the key corresponding to the number you want to enter. Languages and special characters Your phone supports English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese languages. If you select English, enter the letters printed on the keys. If you select another language, you can also enter letters with other marks.

4 Messages You can receive and erase messages. Check with your service provider for features available in your area. All of the following procedures start at the home screen unless otherwise indicated. • New, unread messages are stored in your Text InBox and Voicemail and are bold. • Once you have read a message, you can save it to your Filed folder, erase it, or leave it in your Text InBox. Retrieving messages When a text message, page, or voicemail is received, appears on your phone’s screen.
– Ignore returns you to the home screen. To access your voicemail You can access your voicemail in several ways. From the home screen, do any of the following: • Press and hold • Press , your voicemail speed dialing number. followed by . Note: A voicemail number may have been programmed into your phone for your convenience. Check with your service provider. • Select Menu → Messages → Voicemail, and press . To view your text messages 1. Select Menu → Messages → Text InBox. 2.
– Erase the current message. – Save the message to your Filed folder. – Save New saves the sender’s information as a new contact. – Done returns you to the Text InBox. – OK returns you to the message screen. 5. Press to see information such as callback numbers. (If a callback number is included with the message, press again to call the number.) Erasing messages 1. Select Menu → Messages → Erase Msgs. 2. Highlight an option, and press to select it: – No—Cancel and return to the Messages screen.
– Filed—Erase all messages in your Filed folder. 3. A message appears: “Erase ALL?” Select Yes to erase messages or No to cancel. To erase messages one at a time 1. Select Menu → Messages → Text InBox or Filed. 2. Scroll through the messages until you find the message you want to erase. 3. Press to select the message to erase. 4. Select Erase. A message appears: “Erase this message?” 5. Select Yes to erase the message, or No to cancel.
– Old in-box text automatically erases old, read messages. Message alerts You can choose how you want to receive alerts for voicemail, pages, and text messages. Note: If a message is received while you are on a call, the phone does not vibrate to alert you. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Messaging, then the type of alert (Message Alert, Net Alert, Page Alert, or Voicemail Alert). 2. Press to select an option. – Disabled does not alert you when a message is received.
– Soft beep once sets the phone to beep softly once when a message is received. – Soft beeps sets the phone to beep softly every 5 minutes. To stop this reminder, press or , or press to select Ignore. – Loud beep once sets the phone to beep once loudly when a message is received. – Loud beeps sets the phone to beep loudly every 5 minutes. To stop this reminder, press or , or press to select Ignore. Low memory If your phone is low on memory or is out of memory, you may not be able to receive new messages.

Silence All You can silence all phone sounds, including the ringer and all alerts, and set the phone to vibrate or light up. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Silence All. 2. Highlight and option and press to select: – No, normal (Normal turns on the ringer.) – Yes, vibe only – Yes, lights only Note: indicates the phone is in Silence All mode. Note: Silence All supersedes other sounds/ringer settings, but does not “reset” those settings.
Keyguard The Keyguard locks your keypad to protect your phone against accidental keypresses when the phone is turned on and a call is not in progress. You can still answer or silence an incoming call. To turn keyguard on • From the home screen, press left and hold. To turn keyguard off • Press → → in this order. To set auto keyguard 1. Select Menu → Settings → Keyguard. 2. Highlight, then press to select from the options.
Sounds You can change your phone’s alert sounds. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Sounds, then the setting you want. To change the ringer 1. Select Menu → Settings → Sounds → Ringer Type. 2. Scroll through the list of ringers. A sample plays as you highlight each one. 3. Press to select a ringer. Tip—If a contact has been saved as business or personal, you can choose from 15 different ringers to identify that type of call.
Display To adjust the backlighting 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Backlighting. – Highlight an option, and press to select it: – 10 seconds turns backlighting on for 10 seconds after your last keypress. – 30 seconds turns backlighting on for 30 seconds after your last keypress. – 10 sec. & in call turns backlighting on during a call, and for 10 seconds after your last keypress. – 30 sec. & in call turns backlighting on during a call, and for 30 seconds after your last keypress.
To change the banner 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → My Banner. 2. Select Edit. 3. Press to clear the screen, and enter your new text. 4. Press twice to save. “Setting Saved” appears on the screen. To assign screen savers Screen savers are provided with your phone. When enabled, these graphics appear 10 seconds after the last keypress. Incoming alerts clear screen savers. This function cannot be used with voice services. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Screen Savers. 2.
To change the main menu view You can change the appearance of the menus you see when you select Menu from the home screen. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Main Menu View. 2. Highlight the option you want: Small Icons, Large Icons, or List Menus. 3. Press to save. Auto-Hyphenation When on, auto-hyphenation automatically inserts hyphens into your phone numbers to be consistent with the U.S. dialing plan. For example, 1-800-555-1111. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Auto-Hyphenation. 2.
Time/Date Format 1. Select Menu → Settings → Display → Time/Date Format. 2. Choose the option you want to display. Display Contrast Adjusts the sharpness of your display using this feature. Voice Services The voice features of your Kyocera 2255 phone allow you to originate calls, answer calls, use voice shortcuts, and record voice memos.
Voice Memo Voice Memo allows you to record and name multiple memos. Play a recorded memo. Pause a memo. Stop recording and return to the beginning of the memo. Rewind the memo. Fast forward the memo. NAME Name a memo. ERASE Erase a memo. To record a memo 1. Select Menu → Settings → Voice Services → Voice Memo. 2. Press tone.” to select Record New.
3. Record your memo after the tone. The screen shows the duration of the current memo. 4. Select and press to stop recording. To name a memo 1. Highlight a training option: – Train All—Commands Yes, No, and Wake-up are trained.
– Untrain All—Erases all training 3. Press to select it. 4. Follow the voice command. Do not speak a command until the prompt is complete. 5. Speak the command clearly into the microphone and listen for “Again.” Say the command again until you hear “Training completed.” 6. Press when finished to return to Voice Services, or press return to the home screen. Note: To end Voice Training at any time, press or to .
To make a call with voice recognition 1. From the home screen, press . 2. At the prompt “Say a name,” speak the name of the person you wish to call. 3. The VR responds “Calling [Name].” Remain silent to make the call, or say “No” to cancel the call. If there are multiple matches to the name that you requested, the VR will ask you to verify which name you want to call. Reply “Yes” or “No” until you hear the desired name. To end a call with voice recognition • Press .
• Select Menu → Settings → Voice Services → Voice Wake-Up → With ext. pwr. Voice Answer You may use voice recognition to answer incoming calls. However, this feature can only be used with an accessory, such as a headset or a handsfree car kit. Voice answer must be enabled for this feature to work, and the ringer must be turned on. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Voice Services → Voice Answer 2. Select Enabled, press . 3. Select Menu → Settings → Sounds → Call Ring/Vibe → Ring only, then press .
To ignore a call You may ignore an incoming call in several ways: • Say “No” or press . The voice alert is silenced. • Remain silent. The voice alert repeats twice and the phone rings once, then returns to the home screen. Security You must enter your 4-digit lock code (typically 0000 or the last 4 digits of your phone number) to set any of the options on the Security menu.
3. Select Lock Phone Use. 4. Highlight an option and press to select it: – Never does not lock the phone. – On power up locks the phone every time you turn it on. – Now locks the phone immediately. To unlock the phone 1. Press to select Unlock. 2. Enter your 4-digit lock code. To restrict calls This function limits the calls you can make to emergency and saved contacts only. Incoming calls can still be answered. • Select Menu → Settings → Security → Limit Calls Out.
To change your lock code 1. Select Menu → Settings → Security. 2. Enter your 4-digit lock code. 3. Select Change Lock Code. A message appears: “Change Lock Code?” – Select Yes and enter a new code, then press code again to verify it. . Enter your new lock – Select Exit to leave your lock code unchanged. To erase all contacts 1. Select Menu → Settings → Security. 2. Enter your 4-digit lock code. 3. Select Erase All Contacts. –Select Yes to erase all contacts.
To erase recent calls 1. Select Menu → Settings → Security. 2. Enter your 4-digit lock code. 3. Select Erase Calls List. – Select Yes to erase all recent calls. A message appears: “Erase ALL recent calls list entries?” Select No to cancel or Yes to erase all recent calls. – Select No to leave the Recent Calls list unchanged. To reset the phone 1. Select Menu → Settings → Security. 2. Enter your 4-digit lock code. 3. Select Phone Reset. 4. Select Yes to reset the phone.
– Select No at any time to cancel. Note: Your 4-digit lock code, Recent Calls list, Contacts directory, InBox contents, memos, and service programming are not reset when you reset your phone. Call Information Recent Calls Timer This timer displays the total number and duration of recent calls you have made and received since the last time you reset the timer. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Call Information → Recent Calls Timer. 2. Press to select Reset. This resets the timer to zero.
Browser Timer This timer displays the total duration of data calls you have made since the last time you reset the timer. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Call Information → Browser Timer. 2. Press Reset to reset the timer to zero. Network Use these settings to view or change options such as roaming and privacy alerts. Some settings may not be available on all phones. Data/Fax Calls In These settings tell the phone how to handle voice and data calls. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Network → Data/Fax Calls In. 2.
– Fax, next call sets the phone to fax mode for the next incoming call or the next 10 minutes. – Data, next call sets the phone to data mode for the next incoming call or the next 10 minutes. – Fax, until off forces the phone into fax mode until the phone is turned off. – Data, until off forces the phone into data mode until the phone is turned off. Note: You cannot receive voice calls while the phone is in Fax or Data mode.
2. Press to select Disabled or Enabled to set an audible alert. Note: An alert message always shows on the screen, regardless of these settings. Roam/Service Alert You can set the phone to alert you if you roam. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Network → Roam/Srvc Alert. 2. Press to select an option: – Disabled does not alert you if you roam. – When no service alerts you with three tones, decreasing in intensity, when service is lost.
– On any change alerts you with three increasing tones if there is a change in roaming service or three decreasing tones if service is lost. Roam Option This setting sets the signals your phone accepts. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Network → Roam Option. 2. Press to select an option: – Automatic (recommended setting) accepts any system the phone service supports. – No Roaming does not allow calls outside of your home service area.
Digital or Analog 1. Select Menu → Settings → Network → Digital or Analog. 2. Press to select an option: – Automatic automatically switches the phone between digital and analog. – Analog only sets the phone to work in analog mode only. – Analog call forces a call into analog mode for the next call. – Digital only sets the phone to work in digital mode only. Reset VM Count 1. Select Menu → Settings → Messaging → Reset VM Count. 2.
Accessory Features Power Backlighting This allows backlighting to remain on when external power, such as a travel charger, is used with the phone. Power Backlighting may not be available with some accessories. 1. Select Menu → Settings → Accessories → Power Backlighting. 2. Select Normal to keep the default setting, or Always on to keep backlighting on. Note: The battery charges slower when backlighting is set to Always on.
Auto-Answer If your phone is attached to a Hands-free Car Kit (sold separately), you can set it to answer an incoming call after 5 seconds. • Select Menu → Settings → Accessories → Auto-Answer → After 5 seconds. Com Port Speed Sets the data rate at which your phone connects with a laptop or a PC. • Select Menu → Settings → Accessories → Com Port Speed. • Press to select 19.2 kbps, 115.2 kbps (default), or 230.4 kbps.

Games For all games described in this section, when an incoming call alert is received, the game is paused and exited. You can return to play once the incoming call alert is ended. The game will not remain paused while the phone is off. Mystic I Ching™ The I Ching is a 3,000-year-old collection of 64 fortunes written in China. 7 Web Browser You can use your phone to browse the Internet if you have obtained phone Internet services from your service provider and if over-the-air Internet access is available in your area. Note: You cannot receive incoming calls while you are using the Web browser and a data call is in progress. To start the Web browser • Select Menu → Web Browser. To exit the Web browser • Press . -orPress from the Web Browser home screen. To go back • Press to go back one screen.

Web Alerts If your service provider activated Internet services on your phone and you are in an area that provides over-the-air Internet access, you may receive Net Alerts. These short messages allow you to quickly access information on the Internet.

They can answer questions about your phone, phone bill, call coverage area, and specific features available to you, such as call forwarding or voicemail.
